Description
From Mangascreener: In a different world than the one we live in, a world where Japan is the lone superpower of the world, there is a wildly popular game show called the National Quiz. Every night, people dreaming of riches, fame, vengeance, and happiness compete on the show, for the chance to be granted a wish, any wish they have: the National Quiz has the power to make your wildest dreams come true. It also has the ability, if you lose, to make your life a living hell.
This is the story of K-i K-ichi (aka prisoner KK47331), a former actor-turned losing National Quiz contestant-turned wildly popular host of the show, and the people and events surrounding him.
I liked the bizarre concept. It was refreshing to see something apart from the usual (although also fun) manga tropes. It was also nice to see some political/societal critique in a manga. (Can't say I agree, but it's nice to read something on a deeper level). Although the serious was interspersed with the silly. Altogether, it was made by a writer and an artist who both experimented around, and the manga is enjoyable to read because of it.
The art has insane expressions. The premise is strange. The characters are not relateable. The plot is kind of one dimensional. The whole plot is made to outline the idea that man is inherently greedy. However, this is a good manga series. Why? Despite the one dimension-ness, it is an interesting premise with a fast and absolutely erratic pace. It is an acid trip on the pages of a manga. It is crazy, nonsensical, a little preachy, but most of all it is pretty fun. Do not expect anything from the characters or the plot. Just take it for what it is - one of the most insane manga you will ever read.
The ending sucked. Sure, but the emotion shown is amazing. Pay attention to K-i-K-i's expressive gestures and antics. Kyoko's wild eyes makes me want to topple a regime. The plot development is sloppy but it's certainly fun to read.
What would happen if the local and international politics of your country as well as the outcome of your life and others' could be influenced by a tv gameshow? Insanity, nationalism and even radicalism rule the National Quiz. A satirical take on the exam-loving Japan.
