it had me in it up to the point where it shows the rape and murder of the good cop's family at the hands of some bad cops. not only is it disturbing but it's utterly ridiculous. i'm really disappointed cause i had it around an 8 up to that point. i had similar problems with wolf guy except it's not as gratuitous here. wow this just pisses me off. i might check back once more after another 15 or 20 chapters have been released, just to see how the increasingly ridiculous conflicts get resolved and if at that time it falls anything short of astounding i'm officially labeling it a FAILURE.
dirty cops takin bribes... ok - half of all the major detectives as well as many high ranking officials involved in the illegal activities... ok since it's a manga and i'm willing to look past the unlikelihood of the it actually happening in reality - everything the author piled on after that though, is just too much for me to handle. especially when it comes to the aforementioned rape which i for one just can't stand seeing in a manga, or anywhere else of courrse (i'm a male, fyi). while rape definitely brings a dose of reality it almost never gets used for anything other than shocking readers to gain attention and it just happens to be a dose of reality that i'd much rather be left out 99.9% of the time seeing as there is almost never a need (imo) to use it to develop the plot (especially in a manga/manhwa/webtoon like remnant that had no indications of just how depraved it was going to turn) unlike classic josei tragedy stories which seem to like to talk about all the disturbing worst-case scenarios that can befall women. i, for one, like to read manga specifically because i can escape to a world of ignorance and denial, where i don't ever have to come across things like rape or torture, which unfortunately do take place every day in the "real world". don't get me wrong, it's not like i'm a hippy, pacifist who can't stand conflict; there are just certain aspects of it (rape and torture specifically) that i'd really rather not have to think about while i'm immersed in a story of fantasy. i'm not even saying things like rape and torture should absolutely, 110% not ever be used; i'm just saying that if you choose to do so, do it responsibly and not only because you wanna throw something shocking into your story, but because your story truly cannot be sufficiently portrayed without it.
yuck... this leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth and a pit in my stomach. i envy those of you who can enjoy a story without getting emotionally attached to it because when it goes wrong like this one did for me, its just that much more disappointing and results in that much more anguish.
the worst 3 mangas/etc. that i have read up to this point:
- legend of maian (omfg i wish i had stopped reading before it reached the time skip around ch.58)
- wolf guy (i don't even understand how that even got published considering how horrible everything gets)
- remnant
