The land in ELNA SAGA is called Gimrey, and supposedly in the far past, before magic became a part of every person, a great monster had swooped down from the north and ravaged the world. Fanning great gusts of destructive magical wind, it reduced nearly everything to empty wasteland before a knight appeared to challenge it.
Bearing a sacred sword and shield which repulsed magic, this knight finally struck the monster down after a tremendous battle. But this creature would not die, and as it lay immobile, the wind poured forth from its wounds unrelentingly. With the last of his strength, the knight planted his sword high atop the mountain where the battle had been fought, so that it would shield a part of the land from the wind. This was the beginning of Gimrey, and the reason why everyone is born with innate magic.
As time passed, people began to fight over fertile ground. ELNA SAGA begins right before the outbreak of yet another war, and tells of a princess named Elna. Born without any magic whatsoever and as such being the only person who can actually touch the sacred sword guarding Gimrey, she becomes a pawn used by her kingdom to threaten other countries with destruction. A rival kingdom's assassination attempt turns rescue, however, when the ones behind this plot reveal that they have no qualms about killing Elna as long as they can maintain a facade using a lookalike. With the help of her would-be assassin, who is drawn to her innocence and compassion, Elna journeys to define herself and stop a terrible war that her country has started.
The first thing one notices is the richness of the world in which this series has been set. The ideas behind ELNA SAGA are drawn loosely from Nordic culture and mythology and the story, people, and names all bear a medieval Northern European flavor. There are no gods or non-human races, but Valkyries, Berserks, and the world tree Yggdrasil make their appearance in one form or another, and the castles and towns evoke nostalgic memories of old storybooks.

I usually like fantasy, but this hasn't quite grabbed me yet. But it's got potential, the art is nice and clean and there's still lots of volumes left to flesh things out. I could do without the scanlator's endless ranting at the beginning and end of each chapter, but it's as easy as deleting them before I start, so no problem.

The little bit of the story that I can read is very interesting and makes me think that this mite be better then a lot of other mangas that have a similar story and similar setting. As of yet I can not say how much I will enjoy it when it becomes fully available but I will probably end up reading the entire thing if it is done within a couple of years or so.

I hate the concept of betrayal more then just about anything else. Not the type of betrayal where a good person betrays someone that is evil but the type where those that are innocent are betrayed by those in power for their own power. It seems to me like this manga has its share of that based on reading the first 5 chapters. I do not know how much and how bad it will be but I will read until I am unable to continue.

Best Fantasy Series

I have read so many mangas in my life (being asian living in SEA), since I was around 8 and now I am 36. This is the best fantasy series ever in my humble opinion.

The story flowed flawlessly and planned carefully. Unlike many other mangas where the art and story started lower than standard then developed as time went by, Elna Saga art is consistence and the story grabs you from the very beginning.

The logic of magic and pretty much everything in the series is very strong and coherent. The message and agenda of characters are very authentic and develop properly as the story progress.

I read Elna Saga when I was in my college years and after a career change, moving to US and living in LA for almost a decade, I have lost my collection of my old mangas. Last week, I went to second hand manga store and found the whole series in one nice bundle, though in not a very good condition, I picked it up.

Reading through Elna Saga again confirmed my belief that this is the best Fantasy manga ever. I wish someone scanlate it and share the beauty and joy of Elna Saga.

Edit : My wish came true with the release of the scanlation on this series!!!
