If you are reading Category Freak for the first time. Don't judge the series solely on volume 1. Try volume 2 also or just skip volume 1 altogether and read volume 2 and up. Volume 1 is more of a compilation chapters sensei did over a period of time and put them together. The beginning of volume 1's art and volume 2's art are very different. The characters are revealed more in volume 2. The plotline is also more interesting also and funny.
