No thought, head empty.

My personal library has nearly complete issues of the Japanese Libras and Biblos magazines dating back to around 1995, when I first started reading yaoi. So, yeah, I think I can safely say I I have read some things and there's not much that phases me but. Holy. Shit.

This is not for the faint hearted or the pearl clutching, purity culture refugees whining about all the nasty shit that goes on in Smut/Mature tags. This is not safe, sane or consensual. For anyone involved in this story, damn. The exception are us, the readers. We, at least, are warned in every which way possible from up and down, back and forth, sideways, left to right and back again that this is hardcore.

If that doesn't scare you, give it a go.

Do people actually read these kinds of yaoi for the plot?? (don't get it when people complain about plot in some yaoi)

I read this 3 times already and each time it's as good as before. It's totally fetishy, and you shouldn't expect anything more than that.

My first Xing Bao Er Novel. HHYL really gave me a creep in the middle.
The author successfully describing rape = not love in yaoi world.
Jing is very cruel super sadistic seme and heartless, merciless, all the shameful thing we can throw at him. First volume, it full of heartbreaking story of how cruel Jing to Lu Cang. But Lu Cang still loving him. It's not because Lu Cang fell for his rapist. But Lu Cang fall in love in Jing at first sight without knowing Jing is a man.
Lu Cang never touched women and believe it's impossible to find his soulmate lover. But when he saw Jing he actually think that Jing is his soulmate for life. But however Lu Cang loves Jing, at early story their sex are not enjoyable and sad. It has good plot because it is so rare to see seme like Jing. So unbelievable. Recommended.

Note : in ancient Chinese there are actually homosexual couple. And indeed in history there was king who had male partner, just like Jing. So the way Jing behave and people around him accept it's not something so 'uncommon'. It's not normal in that time but not 'so uncommon'.
Read history before you guys throw tantrum. There were some emperors & noble class who indeed prefer men or bisexual.
Even there was an Emperor who devoted to his male partner and passed away without an heir.

typical pathetic yaoi

If you expect some surprise based on how characters look and behave at first, you can find a different manga or expect to be disappointed.
This is exactly the same crap: spineless crying uke gets raped once, twice, many times, never really tries to do anything but beg, then falls for seme; while seme thinks of him like a toy and then falls for him, too. Everything is forced. Even sex doesn't look enjoyable.
There is no interesting plot or some kind of power play. One of them is a weak victim, the other one is a pointless rapist, both are beautifully drawn. That's it. That's all there is.

Oh, and one or two chapters in the middle contain animal abuse.

The art is nice to look at, but the characters and stories are a gigantic piece of shit. So....I guess it balances out... The author tries to pass off an abusive relationship as romantic. It's like the manhua version of fifty shades of gray but between 2 guys. Even the sex scenes aren't satisfying. It's a huge waste of time and should be skipped.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I dreaded every page of the novel, hope slowly died with every line read.
The manga is by no means better.

This is a sadistic piece that is only loved because it has a sexy looking King, which makes it all the better. But honestly its not for the fainthearted, in fact if your looking for any justice (on Lu's part at least) there will be none. This is about a King who is greatly evil and trains a dog, which will be Stockholm loyal to him (he attempted everything to escape and since the Emperor also has mythical powers...you can imagine how that turned out!).

That's about it. I like evil people, but this wasn't even a battle, this was pure mind-break, fckery and annihilation, the other party has absolutely nothing, it couldn't even hold a candle against the mentally flippant King.

It'll probably end the same as the novel. No justice served. Some sappy apparently "made-up" happiness where the King's successful training (slavery at its best) succeeded to overwhelm the dog and he barks happily when called. The end.

Some will like it. Good on you guys. Society totally needs more of this shit, then we can call serial killers - lovers of humanity and stuff, I mean the victims "loved" it right? Same logic here mind you. But it's a manhwa (so let's not get too serious as many would state), with pretty pictures, and gruesomely disturbing sex and plot...yet it has it's charm, I do note that, it does reel you in, even if it's horribly disturbing, it has you itching in hope (since it dies last) only to crush it constantly.

But again, not recommended for normal human beings.

the story was good, it was unique i got to say. a bit surprised when the " strong guy there' ended being the emperor's bottom XDDD

though somehow.. i wanted this to be " sad ending' i don't like that emperor and it would be good if in the end the emperor did not get what he wanted LOL XDDD

Misleading

I only started the novel where this manhua left off, so when I was still reading the manhua I had failed to notice that the goal of the plot was not, in fact, to punish Lu Cang for kidnapping women and intending to rape, with rape itself. It would have been amusing poetic justice. Instead it's gratuitous sex and all the boring noncon yaoi tropes taken to the extreme.

Seriously memorable

On the one hand, yeah, I get the complaints about this novel/manga. It's not for the faint of heart, and I have to admit that I winced more than once while reading it, even though I consider myself pretty hardened when it comes to violence. Do NOT read either the manga or the novel if you have issues with gory, explicit violence/sexual assault. On the other hand, I personally really appreciate this story for what it is--a deeply disturbing love affair between two people that are pretty much as far from perfect as humanly possible. Both Jing and Lu Cang have their huge (HUGE, HUGE) issues, but that's what makes this story so interesting and its characters so compelling. Sweet, carefree love stories are a dime a dozen, but dark, seductive madness (done well) is much rarer. The manga is absolutely, breathtakingly beautiful, and somehow more comedic than the novel (lol at how they drew the dog scenes), but to really appreciate the full scope of the plot, I'd really recommend reading the novel. The fan translators did an amazing job, and obviously put a lot of care and research into fully explicating the storyline for the rest of us.

To address some of the issues the other reviewers have brought up:
1) the (novel's) ending: I don't know how anyone could possibly have expected a typical "they all live happily ever after." Were we even reading the same story? Jing and Lu Cang were never going to run away together and adopt a dozen kids etc. etc. That's not who they are, as is made clear from the very beginning. The ending is bittersweet, and honestly, sweeter than I expected it to be. It satisfied the audience's expectations while staying true to the characters.
2) the rape is disturbing: well yeah, rape is disturbing. I agree with sunamemory's review on this. Contrary to how it's usually portrayed in yaoi, rape is a horrendous crime. I like that HHYL doesn't make light of it the way yaoi usually does. To me, it's even worse when a manga treats rape like it's no big deal--what the hell sort of message does that send? If you can't stomach a more realistic portrayal of rape and how it affects the victim, avoid HHYL.
