Description
Because of their parent's remarriage, high school student Satou Yuka, suddenly finds herself living together with her stepbrother, 23-year-old high school teacher Satou Taichi. Actually, their parents have not registered their marrriage and therefore they aren't even siblings by law; but since both parents aren't around, they end up living together! Taichi who has a very serious case of sister complex, wishes for Yuka to call him "onii-chan". But Yuka's reaction is very cold?

i was just re-reading this series and it smacked me in the face how awesome the mangaka is for creating such a hilarious cast with so many winks and nods to lots of shoujo (and sometimes even BL) tropes. the plot isn't anything amazing or groundbreaking to comment over, but the way the characters are built and interact with each other makes me smile and spit out my water laughing in every chapter.

this manga is often compared to host club, and although i agree that the character archetypes are completely similar, they are quite different in execution and that's what made the romance angle work for me in this work while it fell quite flat for me in host club (thus leading me to drop the manga once it focused entirely on that). while haruhi is completely oblivious to everything romance and sex-related, yuka is not. she might be oblivious to other's feelings for her and shares haruhi's unique wit and "straight man" role, but she is completely aware of the implications of her living under the same roof as an older, attractive man and the complications that might arise should this man no longer decide to be her older brother (as well as the confusion she would feel if this would happen). as for taichi, he's a huge, adorable and thick-skulled dork like tamaki is, but not nearly as innocent. in fact, it's proven he can be quite a perv and has some experience with women. he's aware of what his developing feelings mean, the impasse is what he is to do with them. this makes the romance much more....honest, in my opinion, and much more believable and acceptable than host club's was.

also i love taichi's friend...eiji? he's such and troll and takes everything in stride (including taichi drunk-making-out with him, lmfao). yuka's friend is also an amazing troll. and arata....is so....unexpectedly sexy. lol. now i don't know who to root for ;_;

tl;dr: my two favorite male characters crossdress so 10/10 biggrin

Well, as stated below, it is getting boring. It started out fine I guess an the female lead isn't as annoying as other shojous, but the plot just gets boring. It would have been better if it was a shorter romance, in my opinion so that it can end already (I may be a little biased since that I read too many shoujo). Other than that it was an okay read, although I dropped it now. Only read if you can tolerate typical plot devices and such, as well as having a 'yes it is a shoujo plot' thought in mind...

I seriously don't understand why ppl are being so nice with this.The reality is, this shiit is boring..I hate the fact that the male lead takes nothing seriously! And when he does it lasts a second and its back to baboon ! The female lead is the typical 'leave me alone because I'm emotionless' person.Basically this crap a failure at the attempt of ouran high school host club....

My advice is, don't waste your time on a story that has so little romance and a crappy day to day plot, what a waste of my battery life :/

It's sweet and nice, but not overly interesting. The characters are likeable, and there's some laugh-out-loud scenes at points. It isn't fast paced, but that makes it more realistic. The main thing I would criticise is the flow of the manga. At times it felt very disjointed and jagged; episodic but without clear definition at the endings, but this is just a minor point.
It's a good read if you're looking for something airy and light but still realistic. Don't expect fast-track romance. The main character is strong but in a non-annoying way and the guy's personality is funny.

It makes me laugh every time! The girl is strong, hilarious and adorable; I like how, for a change, it's not the girl chasing the guy, but the other way around.

GuyFreakz: Manga Abyss changed their name. They're known as Hokkaido Hub now and list Sugar Family among their current projects, although I don't know what the status of the next chapter is.

...Actually, I think my favorite part of this manga was the cute oneshot in the middle called, "Princess princess". Zomg = love, I hope the mangaka decides to make a sequel, or even a whole manga like that! I loved it.

Not that the actual manga (Sugar Family) wasn't cute and wonderful in and of itself - funny, sweet, etc. It just seems kind of plotless at the moment - but then, we aren't very far into it, so maybe the will become more obvious soon ^_^. And I do like the characters, although Taichi's 'Onii-chan' attitude annoys me at times. I agree with the others, the couple of Yuka and Taichi is very Ouran-ish, yes? biggrin

It is too cute. I have to agree with everyone about this being reminiscent of Ouran. Wahhh. It is just soo soo cute. I love everything. Especially the chapter with the nude Taichi-sensei. So hot!

I was hesitant to pick it up because I'm not fond of teacher/student relationships in manga but after reading the comments here, I decided to give it a try. I definitely agree with everything lialah's comment said. I loved how it started off, misleading the readers into thinking it's one of those student/teacher smut shoujo manga- but turned out to be something totally different. Like lialah mentioned, Yuka and Taichi and their interactions are totally reminiscent of Tamaki and Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club. Despite being hilarious, there were also some moments that really touched me. A great read and I can't wait for more. (and Taichi-sensei is so cute and hot at the same time!)

Like everyone else here, when I started reading this I thought it would be just another student/ teacher manga. To my suprise, I found it to be so much more than that. The plot is absolutely hilarious, but it also has it's dramatic moments, and they come at the right times. It seems to have a slight 'Eden no hana' feel to it, at least in terms of the sometimes tense but funny interaction with the characters.

Speaking of the characters... as I was reading this they seemed to remind me of a certain pair, then it hit me. Tamaki and Haruhi of Ouran host club! Yuka is somewhat like Haruhi, at least in the respect of her cool and somewhat sarcastic personality. On the other hand, Taichi is a lot like Tamaki, and I found his goofy and childish personality very funny. Further, the interaction between these two is absolutely hilarious, and quite reminiscent of Haruhi and Tamaki.

Overall, a very funny manga with original characters. Highly recommended!

Well, normally I'd give most shoujo manga a miss 'cos many are just so blah on character development and absolutely thin on plot. However, this title is just too hilarious for words and it's interesting how they interact with one another.
