Plot takes a back seat to the harem elements

There seems to be a lot of these “living and going to school at a specialized academy” types of novels and manga popping up these days. This one instead of focusing on magic development, like most do, instead gave the genre a unique twist and focused on children becoming dragon tamers. Basically these children wander off into the woods when they are seven years old and more or less become impregnated by a mother dragon. They then seem to give birth to a dragon sometime around when they are in middle school and receive training on how to make it do useless tricks in hopes of having it level up. It seems the dragon race is running out of mana or something and needs to leech it from their gullible human hosts in exchange for letting them ride on their back and think they are accomplishing something with their lives. The main characters whole country seems to be infatuated with these dragons and the other countries seem to think the dragons are a threat which leads to the unnecessary drama that unfolds over the course of the novels.

The drama in this series is sort of trite and boring and the real strength of this series lies within the interactions between the characters. Basically at its core this is just another one of the countless school harems you can find floating around out there. The main character Ash starts off as your typical harem male lead, you know the types that most Japanese otaku males can relate to. A plus is he doesn't seem perverted or possess the negative traits most do. He seems to be hard working and his back story made him out to have lived a somewhat difficult life.

His pet dragon is named Eco and she is your typical tsundere. Silvia is the other main character who also gives of a bit of a tsundere vibe. Rebecca is your stereotypical perfect student council president, you see this character type in pretty much every school manga/novel/anime ever made. Jessica is (or at least tries to portray) your typical rich spoiled girl minus the typical tsundere qualities, at least from what I have read thus far. Lukka is your quiet yet affectionate loli character, you can't really have a harem without one of these characters or the otakus will bash your novel, she is also an elf as an added bonus. There are also Silvia's sisters who each possesses a distinctly different personality. You have the calm, calculating Mirabel and her polar opposite the rash, military buff Veronica. Then you have the royal family's maids. Cosette is introduced early on and she is Silvia's personal maid. She seems to be extremely loyal, although sometimes teasing towards Silvia and gives off a mysterious sort of vibe. Then there is the stereotypical clumsy maid Primrose who is Veronica's maid. Other notable females are Anya, who is sort of a villain/lacky in the story, and Navi, who seems to be either Eco's alter personality or a computer program of sorts. I have a feeling both will be further explored in the later novels, especially Anya who the author will probably have end up joining Ash's harem in the later novels. Ash also has two male friends which appear so infrequently and contribute so little to the story that I almost forgot they existed.

Again, as I stated earlier, the drama means next to nothing in this series. And the whole Pokemon cliché plot of trying to raise your dragon into the best it can be sort of takes a back seat to the harem interactions between Ash and pretty much all of the females. The main focus is on the Ash, Silvia, and Eco love triangle which I only believe is going to get more complicated and annoying in the upcoming novels and will probably ultimately end with some convenient ending like all three getting married. The side characters relationships may be expanded upon in the future, they each have a nice (although stereotypical) character and background that the author can easily expand upon. Pretty much all the female characters in the school start gravitating towards the male after the first few volumes though so who knows how large his harem grows to by volume 20, it could very well be in the hundreds. I only hope the author keeps it reasonable and doesn't make the mistake Mahou Sensei Negima made in having too large of a female cast to keep up with, which led to many being neglected and poorly developed by the author.

Sorry for the long review for those still reading. As a rating I would probably give this series an average-like score of 7 after reading the first five volumes. Depending on the character development in the later novels that score could fluctuate plus or minus 2 points probably in either direction. If you are looking for a good action adventure novel with dragons I would look elsewhere. If you are instead looking for a harem novel where the protagonist can basically get any girl he wants and save the world in the process then maybe this novel is for you.
