When the looming Cold War shrouded Japan, mysterious murders were reported there. The suspect was a man with a skull-like helmet and a cape and clothing as black as the inside of a grave.

Accompanied by a shape-shifting beast named Garo, the Skull Man terrified Japanese societyŚwithout giving the people a clear reason why.

Read for:
The atmospheric backgrounds, the stylish drawings of characters with elongated limbs (Shotaro Ishinomori style), the meticulously and powerfully drawn lines, a B movie plot that's over the top (wouldn't be a stretch to call it ridiculous) but is entertaining if you don't expect much.

There's some really cool drawings in this manga. I don't regret reading it.

There is a very obvious cynicism in the story. I wonder if that's because it was made in the 1970's and people were confronting and doubting authorities then but it seems to be very specific with things that might have been happening in Japan at the time. There's some blatant bitterness and distrust towards people in power. Politicians, owners of corporations, bankers etc. I don't have a clue what was happening in Japan at the time but I wouldn't be surprised if I learned there was an outbreak of scandals then. It has a very bleak tone.

But this is a pulpy, good, horror and action story.

It´s like a B horror movie with a tragic ending. This mutant child has been chased for years by a detective agency. Along with his mutant pet. He decides to take revenge on those that have pursued him.

And all of their friends, families, businesses, hell, he says he wouldn´t mind killing all of a japan. Now there´s an anti hero, though I never found myself rooting for him. Maybe I exaggerated a bit.

But he doesn´t know why he´s being sought. This story reminds me of early batman strips, and the supposed myth of batman at the beginning of his career. You might also be reminded of death note a little. As well as frankenstein´s monster.

Some people I talked to even named it a classic. So, naturally, I had high expectations. I mean, Ishinomori, I love you, but this was by far your worst work.

The only parts of the artwork that were nice to look at the the many, many, never-ending full-pages on scenery, often just trees or a skyline. I gave it a three because some parts of the plot itself were interesting, but most of it just made me think 'why am I bothering?'

I would only recommend this manga to people who either want to read the earliest of Ishinomori's works, or if they really like looking at five pages of different angles of trees.
