From Yen Press:

Ten years ago, the mysterious Hell's Gate suddenly materialized in the middle of Tokyo, and the stars of the night sky were obscured in darkness. In their place, new stars emerged, each corresponding to an individual endowed with supernatural abilities. Devoid of emotion and conscience, these powerful killers have come to be known as Contractors.

But most people know nothing of the Contractors in their midst, and high-schooler Kana Shinoh is no exception. Still struggling to pick up the pieces after her father's death last year, Kana has never troubled herself with the rumors about Hell's Gate. That is, until she spots her father in the street one day. Determined to prove her father is still alive, Kana begins her search, but her mission is attracting some rather dangerous attention. Fortunately, she is rescued from the clutches of death by Hei, the most wanted Contractor in Tokyo. Though he is unsympathetic to her situation, Hei agrees to protect her as she searches for her father. But just how much should she trust the Contractor known as the Black Reaper?

This one wasn't awful. It was a straight forward storyline, with no extra trimmings. I do like the main character, Hei. I also like the idea of the mask he wears when he kills people. Kana wasn't a bad character either. Canon could have had a lot lot more done with her. Kyo was interesting but he could have been fleshed out more. Without the little bit of flashback stuff, this manga could have been confusing. I did find the whole story a bit rushed, especially toward the end. The situation with MI6 was resolved way too fast. The ending itself was rather flat, and unsatisflying. I haven't watched the anime, which everyone tells me I should.

I like it especially the omake. ^^ Maybe a bit shoujo but it doesn't affect me much as I read both shonen and shoujo. It focus more on Kana than Hei and I can't accept the reason Kanon attracted to Kana. Overall, okay~ ^^

The only interesting parts about this manga is the fact that Hei wears an awesome mask when he kills which I would like to own in reality and that he's a pretty quiet guy who's very loyal to his people and doesn't brag about his work.

I had seen the first episode of the anime and thought it was shounen, i kinda liked what i saw. Then i'm looking for shoujo and find the darker than black manga, i was like: "WTF! i thought it was shounen!".

Well i just finished reading the manga, i didn't like it much, the end was too vague and the romance was never concrete. The plot was really intersting but it wasn't well done.

I'll give it a 5 just because i liked the general idea of hellgate and contracters and all that.

This is more like a bad fanfic than a manga. The main character is an obvious Mary Sue and the plot resembles bad shoujo unlike the anime which had more of a shounen vibe. I would highly recommend the anime but the manga is awful.

Well yeah, I was surprised after reading the manga, but oi, what the heck...who cares if it resembles a bit shoujo-y now? Hopefully the manga would give a more proper explanation than what the anime did and left gaping plot holes.

October 8th, 2007, 12:01am's definitely not something I would expect to come out of such an anime! The art is alright, and Hei is cool, as usual. The manga looks pretty interesting, but the anime is still better, so far.

For those who wanted a proper romance in the series, I think the manga comes closer to it.

the shoujo-ness of the manga is certainly interesting, but after experiencing the feel and storytelling of the anime, one expects the same from the manga.. Still, the manga isn't bad at all.. it feels very much like an omake to the anime's original story. Well, whatever the either case.. Hei rocks!
