Somewhere in Tokyo, there is a room. In that room is a black sphere. Periodically, people who should otherwise have died are transferred to the room. There, the sphere gives them special suits and weapons, and sends them out on a mission to kill aliens here on Earth. While these missions take place, the rest of the world is largely oblivious to them. These missions are lethal--few participants survive them. The sphere calls the shots, and it's not the slightest bit nice. Its name... Gantz.

Gantz is a well done manga. The only beef I have with it is I'm not a fan of jumping right into the action from the beginning, although it wasn't too bad with this manga. Other than that, artistic quality is insanely detailed, and well laid-out. I get tired of reading paragraphs of explanations of story I don't care all that much for. Instead there is lots of action, and character development occurs not only with verbal communication with each other but also their actions within the story. Much of the background to the manga remains a mystery, and I can't wait for each chapter to come out. I was never really into DBZ, when battles dragged on I really got sick of watching it. The difference with Gantz is that take a long time to get through but they actually have action most of the time, unlike DBZ in which there is a lot more bragging and gasping and whatnot. And when there isn't action, it gets into deeper character developement, as characters question the position they're in, and further their relationship with others. The concept is strange at first, but you get used to it, and it becomes much more exciting and unique. Definitely worth the read.

I notice a lot of the reviewers seem to have a lot of problems with character development and story. They are entitled to their own opinion, but I strongly disagree. If you stick with the manga, you notice that the characters (who live) grow throughout the volumes and become different and even likeable people. Especially the main character. Many people don't really like the continuous battles, but I think they are suspencefull and really well done. My only strong dislike for the manga is the constant fanservice, occasional random sex scenes, and women with unrealistically gigantic boobs posing on chapter covers and what not. It's so unnecessary. I think the story would be a lot stronger if the author wasn't constantly forcing this into the plot when it really isn't relevant and doesn't relate to the story at all. Anyway, if you can ignore this, and you like swoot battles and nifty ideas and the like, you should definetly give this addictive manga a try. I'm on volume 19 and I can't wait till they translate more.

Good art, too bad the author doesn't know the first thing about making a decent story, and interesting character developments. If you think DBZ was bad... well this is DBZ for the "adults" who still couldn't quite get over DBZ....

Fight fight fight die die die win *repeat. If you enjoy banality, senseless violence and tons of fan service, read this For everyone else, there's Berserk and Blade of the Immortal.

The way this manga is set up is like a fricken rollar coaster, right from the beginning it throws you down at full speed. of course at the beginning you cant throw much light on character development since there is very little interaction between the characters verbally, but as the manga moves on and after you've all faced the carnage of the chapter dealing with the buddist temple. well it starts to get really good, and if you wanted to know more about kurono, this is where you start to really get a feel for his mind. heck im only on chapter 217 right now havent had time to get uptodate with the new chapters, but i'll start reading again after another 15chapters come out. only problem i got with this is that the chapters are really short, but i guess it works really well with this action type of manga, gives you little jolts of adrenaline so that your heart will keep racing from beginning to end.

Did you even bother reading past the first couple of chapters? The manga is hardly over! If you had bothered reading up to the most recent chapters, you'd see things become a lot different.

It's actually an excellent manga where the characters grow and develop into more 3-dimensional human beings. The only thing I would recommend is to read by volumes, or save up chapters, because the chapters, especially the past 5-10 drag out scenes. While I enjoyed them and the artwork very much, most people who read manga do not have that patience.
