By night, junior high student Yoshimori Sumimura is a "kekkaishi"--a demon-hunter who specializes in creating magical barriers around his prey. By day, Yoshimori's got some other demons to battle: an addiction to sweets and a seriously crotchety grandfather! Yoshimori's pretty 16-year-old neighbor and childhood friend, Tokine Yukimura, is also a kekkaishi, but their families are feuding over who is the true practitioner of the art.

Won the 52nd Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen category.

I don't usually like to rate just moments after finishing, but this was another one of those mangas that you can't put down. Unfortunately, it has many shortcomings, especially towards the end. I, too, feel like ending was a bit of a let down. I don't care about the coupling issue, I am speaking of the so-called resolution to everything. It made it seem like everything that had been built up in the previous chapters was for nothing. Further, when writing science fiction/fantasy, it is essential that you establish rules for the unnatural. Yet, at the end, the rules were simply tossed out the window for the sake of drama. The problem with this approach is it breaks the suspension of disbelief. Why did Yoshimori not simply resurrect Gen and bring him into the real world? He certainly had the power to do so before the sealing. What could actually stop Yoshimori from using his power to re-enter the new Karasumori? If not Yoshimori, then Tokine certainly could have, she had the ability to breach any kekkai. Those really bugged me, and were not adequately explained. Another issue is that the story simply got too convoluted after Yoshimori started the mu training. Don't get me wrong, I love stories involving strategy and politics, but it just seemed like the intrigue in this story lacked focus and direction. I don't blame Tanabe completely, since it is strongly hinted in the author notes and the omake that her hands were forced by the editor. You could tell she was not happy about the whole Gen plot direction and purposely tried to insert a near clone later on in the story. One can easily deduce that either she was cajoled to go in that direction. Hell, it even is said in one of the contests that Gen was the character she liked most. It is not unexpected, since I have always suspected that the editorial oversight at SS was extremely heavy handed. I wonder what the series might have been like if she was given more artistic freedom? Would gen be allowed to actually state he did not feel attraction to women? Would a more satisfying ending have been allowed to develop? Yes, it seems like I demand a lot, but it is quite disappointing to see a wonderful idea for a story not live up to its fullest potential. Don't get me wrong, this is far from being a bad manga. Even with my complaints, I would still say it is a good read.

Despite what everyone says, I don't think it was very rushed. They built up towards the ending 20'ish chapters before (which is pretty much a whole volume or two {?}), and a few chapters before the last, it was clear what Yoshimori's role was. All you gotta do is actually read what the characters say to each other.

It took a bit of a dark turn near the end, but as far as mangas about youkai, ayakashi, and spiritual powers go, it was a pretty mature finale. Pretty depressing in some ways, but good all the same.

As for anyone who really doesn't know how Yoshimori and Tokine's relationship turns out, honestly, just read between the lines. Hell, even the side-comment that u have to read vertically gives out a huge hint. It's not that hard if you actually read into it a bit:

Yoshimori says he wants to be an architect and build a house for him and Tokine to live in. The sensible deduction would be a house for them to live in together as a couple. Tokine responds that he'll have to know math in order to be an architect, and she'll teach him that math as it coincides with her own future plans. Seriously, she may as well have come out and said 'I Do'.

Granted, it kinda sucks that the main characters only got about 3 pages, but it pretty much wrapped up any unclear feelings between them.

Not the greatest final chapter, but it was decently planned ending overall, compared to many shounen endings out there. Just gotta pay attention to the foreshadowing.

Wow, after 345 Chapters this manga ended - IT HAD AN ACTUAL END ! Well- it felt a little bit rushed and I would have wished for more romance -
Spoiler (highlight to view)
like some Rescue and hug situation (witch would be minimum standard for this genre...) or at least some kiss... sad :-(

But it felt concluded and open ...

A really good manga.

I enjoyed it. Had a nifty story and new stuff I haven't heard before. I just think the ending is not right. Yoshimori had so much power he could have used and while it does show him creating the castle, I thought we would see a great battle with Yoshimori in it. Great battles but could have seen more power from the main character.

Great manga, all the way through. I didnt care for the last chapter, not because the ending sucked but rather the main characters only get 3 pages of the "ending". Kinda annoying. Otherwise was a great work, could easily have continues or have a spin off if the author chose to.

This manga has taken me on a long, long drive... However, it has the possibility as continuing and not ending there. Since its shounen. However, I guess its got to end, right? Sigh...

Plot:Very interesting and original in it's own way.Basically sth like a hyper upgrade of Inuyasha.Starts a bit slow but unfolds better as time goes by.Sometimes it's a little perplexed without any particular reason though.

Character development:The characters are developed pretty nicely and considering the fact that you will meet more than 60 different characters there is a good management of them. But most of them are your typical shounen ones so no originality here. Also i don't like the shounen syndrome where the protagonist doesn't dirty his hands. What i mean is that Yoshimori is the guy who wants to protect everything but doesn't have the power to do so.So when the situation is sink or swim (when he is dealing with half ayakashi or humans) and knows the risk that if he doesn't kill them sth worst will happen, someone else pops up and does the cleaning job done.Or that some bad guys get away when they can be apprehended.I would rather the series had Masamori, his elder brother as the protagonist who is someone similar to the flame alchemist from FMA rather than the moron Yoshimori. But that's never gonna change.Fighting shounen will and always have a teenage student as a lead character with a million flaws so as the story progresses he gets over them little by little, and not a conscious person.Masamori and Mudou definitely the best 2 characters of the story.

Artwork:Well...Average.Not too detailed on the characteristics of the faces take Yukimura for example. The scenery is ok but also sth not very impressive. But i don't care much since i read manga for the story and not for their artwork.

Be prepared though. This series has a lot of chapters and is a little slow at first.
Also sth tells me that after 342 chapter the ending will suck.

So instead of ending this stupid curse as the god of 339/15 stated now more characters have to needlessly be sacrificed like Yoshimori's mother 342/18 (although never liked her). The story goes for another moronic shounen ending. If they could plead that God why didn't they ask him to destroy Karasumori in the first place. It's like the whole story crumbles and 340+ chapters were in vain! The mother missed for 10 years, people died at Karasumori, lives where changed and many students were put at risk.Let me guess, the founder will also go unpunished right?

PS: Boo boo boo boo.The ending felt like a waste of time, bad, rushed and inconsistent (meaning the last 10 chapters or so which makes sense if you also read the spoiler above).I felt like I wasted my time reading the whole manga.

I can see why some would not like it (my sisters judge it because they don't like the art and the way the heroes start out fighting with "boxes") but I think this is definitely one of the better series out there. It does start out really slow and it can occasionally be a little stupid but as the series goes on it gets much more complex and interesting. The characters really flesh out and become human and the villains become less flat. The morally gray areas of politics are also introduced. What I like the best is that the characters do find out more unique ways of using these "boxes" and change their form, specialty, strength, etc, and their ability to use them diverges. The main character is funny and yes, naturally strong though he can't get his head in the game at first,

and although I don't particularly like Yoshimori's brother, he's intriguing and I can understand his jealousy. I also love the Urukai characters he commands. Especially Sen and... what's-his-name, the amiable (usually) vampire with the squinty eyes and the kid with the paper bag over his head, lol.
So yes, it's exciting, with a good plot, many loveable characters, and I even liked the ending, which for me is pretty rare.
