From ryColaa:

Minamoto-kun has a face pretty enough to make people think he's a girl. Because of his face, he was bullied by the girls in middle school who were jealous of his face. He developed a fear of women due to the trauma and he ended up attending a high school for boys. Just as he enters college and makes a promise to himself to overcome the trauma of his past, his father remarries and asks him to move out of the house.

His father arranges him to live with his aunt (Minamoto-kun's father's younger sister) for the time being. She is an extremely beautiful woman who is also a non-tenured professor at his college. When he arrives at her apartment, she shows him her breasts and tells him that he will be her "guinea pig" in her reverse Hikari Genji project.

The basic premise is that a renowned professor, whose specialty is the story of Hikaru Genji, forces her nephew to reenact the folk tale. If he doesn't comply, he can feel free to move out. She's basically black mailing him, controlling his sex life so she can understand a story better. She is one of the most manipulative, selfish kind character to be written.
The premise is dumb. It sounds so ridiculous that it might work as a cringe comedy, but it plays everything straight, inhuman melodrama and everything. How does reenacting further your understanding? How can you be sure that it was like in the story, how do you know that the story was close to reality in any way, how do you know it was not just a metaphor? How can that woman think her little reenactment would simulate the same emotional states of the characters in the story? She she plans to make Minamoto seduce various girls, among them her niece and his cousin, everything is planned with precision, everything is manipulated, subtly undermining the girls' intentions, exploiting their emotional weaknesses. Minamoto strings along with it, cause he wants to get laid (and needs a place to stay since he can't live with his father anymore), and he doesn't give a second thought about what the girls want, just what he might need to do to get in their pants. Which would be okay if the series was aware of atrocious his actions are, but instead it portrays him (and the aunt) in a rather positive light.
Apart from the boldness of the goal (sleeping with 13 women) and the actual effort exerted to achieve this goal (read: it's pretty intense ecchi), there is nothing much to this manga but a large amount of cock teasing, which apparently helps to get readers hooked for a long time
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It takes 47 chapters, if you must know

I find this series morally atrocious, full of selfish characters and ham-handed attempts at drama, using elements and interpretation of the tale of Hikaru Genji (which by the way ends up with the main character being unhappily wed, his wife getting raped at one point and ultimately becoming a monk, so that's a rather grim outlook).
To Love Ru is more enjoable than this, at least it can get laugh out loud funny at times.

The only thing that sets Minamoto-kun Monogatari from other manga is the main character's conspicuous sexual desire. Given that he is so lewd, one would expect more events to happen. This is most certainly not the case. Each weekly chapter is only 9 pages long, and so the flow of the plot gets severed very quickly. The whole manga is like a series of premature ejaculations. Trying to follow the latest chapter is simply unsatisfying.

Another thing that sucks about this manga is that the characters are shallow. An appealing aspect of harem manga is that the girl characters are extremely lovable. Once you pick a favorite character, you start rooting for her and hope that the main character ends up with her.
In this manga, there are no lovable characters. The aunt is a psychotic lady who wants her own nephew to get laid, and has a shallow reason for wanting to do so. The cousin is a failure of a tsundere and much like the aunt, is shallow. The only likable character is the main character's best friend, who provides some humor. The main character, despite his horniness, is still a failure. Having a main character with guts would be the only thing that would truly separate Minamoto-kun Monogatari from other harem mangas, but even this is not executed properly.

Minamoto-kun Monogatari is a half-assed attempt at a combination of harem manga and hentai. It doesn't provide romance as harem mangas such as Ichigo 100% would, and definitely does not provide the sexual arousal hentai manga provides. If you ask me, it's better to read the two extremes rather than trying to get both aspects by reading a lousy combination.

Man I'm loving reading this but i almost followed this manga from the very beginning and it's pretty interesting but one thing that is constantly breaking my head is that this manga is probably gonna be axed because the it almost doesn't advance on the chapters(8 pages almost every time) and the story is about a guy getting 14 girls but until the chapter i read he didn't have is first yet, but of course im imploting that it doesn't go axed.
So for me i think i am going to until this is more advanced.
But if you are people that like ecchi, comedy and romance and have a little of a good time i would recommend it to read.

wow, what an addicting plot with an interesting mature ecchi story for us immaturish guys. already 31 chapters in and i can tell this author knows how to pace a story quite well, regardless how slow it is. also she seems like she knows what shes doing with the plot so i'm pretty confident it will not spiral downward out of control.

the only (big) problem is that each chapter is like 10ish pages long which essentially turns them into what can best be described as bite sized candies where you'll never have enough in the end to satisfy your hunger.

i don't know about the rest of you but my typical prescription to this problem is to wait. wait as long as i can until this series completes, i lose interest in manga, or i give into temptation and start reading it again unfinished and then get depressed for having to wait for more releases.

Somewhat of a strange manga. The concept is interesting enough, a guy trying to recreate the Genji Monogatari in modern day. Sets up the ecchiness of the manga well, at least potentially. Though, it has its drawbacks. Each chapter so far is much too short and the plot moves rather slowly. I expect it to pick up however, it's growing in popularity quickly.

as it seems people here either being captivated or disgusted by this. in my eye, this piece is not entirely bad, but not special either. true that the characters design need a lot of work, but the idea put under the plot is challenging enough. say its old or overused, but challenging ancients is still challenging. up until now, the manga still has potential to has fascinating development.

update: the most recent chapter really realize its potential. it shakes! I'm surprised! sudden character development make me very excited. I'm glad I decided to catch up 10 or so chapters tonight. biggrin

(rating will go up but oh, i haven't rate it yet. LoL)

I'll be brief: Very short chapters, slow plot development, the main character doesn't look girly even though the plot revolves around that supposed "fact". 6 chapters into the manga and I still feel no attachment to the characters. It's been random mediocre ecchi scenes and dull dialogue so far.

EDIT: Ok now this is just frikkin ridiculous. A mere 7 pages per week of shitty dialogue, recycled ecchi scenes and barely a shred of plot development and I've had enough. Not even the "good" art can save it. Don't read this crap folks, it's just a waste of your time. Seriously if you're persevering for the ecchi just go read hentai instead. I personally have dropped this from my reading list and am now going to remove every shred of it from my memory.

The male lead is pretty weak, there's lots of incest jokes and this is the type of story to string you along from chapter to chapter so cliffhangers are likely to be the norm.

That said, the art is top notch and the premise is uniquely messed up which is a rare accomplishment in a harem manga. You just don't find a character as messed up as the protagonist's aunt outside of hentai that often. Just beware that down the road, this series is designed to leave you with a nasty itching feeling of wanting more every time you read a new chapter.

Normally, I'd give a rating to a series after reading five chapters but in this case most of the chapters are less than ten pages each. Whenever I read a new chapter it feels like I'm missing half the release.

The aunt is quite cold and without personality. Considering how she is going to take up much of the storyline, it would be good if she developed a character sooner than later. I hope this manga doesn't go into incestuous territory. There could be really interesting plotlines of the aunt trying to help the kid and so forth but she ends up messing it up for him. Anyways, really good art (albeit a bit sketch-like), but a solid beginning. It is too early to tell, but this manga has potential.
