While bicycling to school her first day as a high school student, Renge Ohyama meets a weird girl who on closer inspection appears to be a life-sized doll--not an advanced robotic creation or even a magical doll. Rather, a scary looking middle aged man controls her movements, puppet-like, and speaks for her via ventriloquism. Unfortunately, this perverted-seeming old man and his doll happen to attend her new school. Even worse, is in the same class and sits right behind her. And it seems the doll wants to be friends?!

I raised my eyebrows at its summary, but decided give it a try anyway. I'm *really* glad I did, because this has to be one of the funniest manga ever written. It's refreshingly "realistic" for a gag comedy (the old-man-controls-puppet-thing is never played off as normal, but continues to baffle those around him). The characters feel unique despite the manga's obvious love for stereotypes; there are many quirks, twists and a generous amount of character development to be had here. The ending even left me a bit teary-eyed. Of course though, the part where it truly excels is with its comedy. I'm not exaggerating when I say that almost every single chapter had me laughing out loud. Do yourself a favor and give it a chance.

Note: Sumire 17-sai!! was published before Sumire 16-sai!!, so it's more of a prequel than a sequel. You can however read them in any order you want.

I've read quite a lot of mangas and I must say this is hands down my favorite out of the comedy genre. All the characters were interesting in their own ways. Could of been longer but still, it ended nicely.

For those who enjoy perverted comedies. The old man has to be one of the funniest characters created. I wish a sequel would come out for this.

Yeah, it was amusing at times, but the idea of a creepy old man with a doll creeping around a school like that kinda turns me off. Would've been far better if the man in question was actually around the same age as the girls.

I began reading this because someone here compared it to "Angel Densetsu", and what a false comparison that was. It's ok but I can't recall laughing out loud once while reading it.

The guy is creepy and some of the kids are messed up but oddly enough, the ending was good which raised the series for me. Odd how the ending can leave the defining impression of the manga. I can't rate this too high but due to the ending I am willing to go for 5.5. Worth a read but there are much better Mangas out there.

(I really did enjoy the art. The face of the old man is brilliant and really captures his spirit. It just went really really well with his character.)
