Description
From Tokyopop: Meet Eikichi Onizuka, a 22-year-old ex-biker. He's crude, foul-mouthed, and has a split-second temper. His unlikely goal: to be the Greatest High School Teacher in the World! Of course, the only reason he wants to be a teacher is so he can try to score with the hot students... Before he can become a full instructor, he's got to work as a student teacher to earn his credentials. Onizuka may think he's the toughest guy on campus, but when he meets his class full of bullies, blackmailers, and scheming sadists, he'll have to prove it.
GTO won the 1998 Kodansha Manga Award for shounen.
I thought this was going to be one of those really guy-oriented mangas. I wasn't entirely wrong.
Onizuka is definitely a hot-blooded...uh, dude. He's horny, stubborn, violent, and idiotical. It's awesome.
But somewhere along the way, he makes everything funny and so epic. This is the way school comedies should be done. Hands down, GTO rocks all other delinquent-turned-teacher dramedies.
I think GTO is rather highly over rated. The drawing isn't that great and story gets somewhat repetitive with only different people at it.
GTO starts out as not all that entertaining. It doesn't make you laugh out loud - well I never bursted into laughter even once, there's no "awwww" moments of romance, there's really nothing great. But, it is extremely addictive. Once you start, it's really hard to stop. But, that's really the only good quality if you ask me. If you consider it a good quality anyways.
There are several scenes in GTO that seem like the author is trying to use his/her brain quite a bit with the so called smart kids or teachers. But they only get good grades and they honestly aren't that smart. I could come up with better solutions to problems than they do in 5 seconds. The so called prodigy kid doesn't show a single sign of comming up with a clever plan. I think the author somewhat lacks the ability to come up with some really great and makes you go "omg, i never thought of that!!" Rather, most end up as simply being lucky or there was someone else's back hand that happened to have helped him. The same pattern continues through several arcs of this manga. This was the reason for me to drop this manga after reading more than half.
On another side, I think this author had a really bad time with his/her teacher or something. There's so much anti-teacher bashing in this manga that it's almost sickening. And i'm not even a teacher!! Other than the "pretty teacher", "the nurse" and onidzuka, every other teacher is a bad guy with some serious mental issues.
The manga tries to show the so called biker's real life and some real life problems, but the entire manga is just.... really unrealistic. Some stuff in the manga certainly does exist in real life, but all concentrated on one place like that with high prestige school? Give me a break. I know i'm reading a fictional story that is made to be exciting, but so many of the plans and tricks that happen are rediculously unrealistic with extremely easy solution if you only have half a brain occur repeatedly. Honestly, I dislike manga where the main character is a complete moron. He can get tricked a million times and will fall for something almost identical to the last time. He absolutely has no ability to see who doesn't even like him when they are even screaming all the time about it.
Oh btw... this manga has the "enhance" feature in computers vs porn and any other so called mosaiced... It's about a great as some CSI:NY episode where someone goes "I'm going to make a GUI on VB to track the IP". WTF!!! Please don't make bs....
If you haven't read this yet? then what the heck are you doing, they finished translating this in 2005! Go on, get to it! This will be the best teacher/school manga you will ever read. Its got all you want, comedy, action, drama, romance and most of all I like how real life issues are brilliantly delt with by Onizuka! I love this manga and the anime is just so goood, and I have the BOX SET! OH YAAAA! Its a pitty they only animated half of the manga, or else it would have been perfect! Definately my most favourite manga of all time and my most favourite main character in manga. Onizuka is THE BEST!
I didn't think I could find a manga I could like better than any other. Tokyo Crazy Paradise was what came closest to being my favorite, until I stumbled upon GTO. I swear I've never read anything like it.
It's the funniest, most hilarious manga I've read, but it's also one of the most interesting as far as psychology and "depth" goes. Gave it a 10 but it'd deserve more!
I was a little skeptic at first. I was also put off by the art, but once I got into the story I couldn't let it go!!
Onizuka is the man, for real!!
This is a great manga, good story.
I gave it a 10 because the story outshines the art and I could respect that.
The scanalation was a little rough in a few volumes with the color bubbles and different size fonts and types, but towards the end the scanalation cleaned up very well.
A great manga, a must read and good slice of life manga. And to be honest, I've known people like Onizuka, I can realate.
GTO is one of the first and funniest Mangas I have ever read. The main characters are great, it got sickly fun events and scenes all the time. This comics artwork is extremely good but it's too much text and details on the pages it is hard to see in the usual paperback format thereby bringing down the grade a bit. I totally recommend it though!
Not much can be said that already hasn't, don't judge this story by it's cover or what you've herd, read it for yourself and give it a chance and you may just be surprised how good it can be.
