There is a world of myth and magic that intersects ours, and only a special few can see it. Misao Harada is one such person, and she wants nothing to do with magical realms. She just wants to have a normal high school life and maybe get a boyfriend.
But she is the bride of demon prophecy, and her blood grants incredible powers, her flesh immortality. Now the demon realm is fighting over the right to her hand...or her life!
Black Bird received the 54th Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo manga.

Simple but cool
You'll need a better understanding of Japanese folklore (and at some points, Japanese global culture) to really appreciate this manga...that's all it takes to become a great reading! Sorry for my English btw...
No. Just no.
Worst manga ever.
Girl is passive and is a disgrace to females all over. there is very little character development with her. first, she's weak against attacks against demons. then she does nothing about it. doesn't learn exorcism or anything to protect herself, instead she just relies on the bishonen kyo all the time to save her. does she have no shame? i mean, she could learn some self defence courses and even get someone to help her learn some exorcisms so she can live without kyo around!

she willingly lets kyo pretty much date rape her every time she sees him. she's all, no i don' twant to do this! but lets him anyway.
you know how the picture of her on the front of the book normally looks like some bondage/rape scene? the whole story's like that.
it's horribly sexist. if you came looking for a decent heroine, LEAVE NOW! the girls is stupid and naive and not so innocent. it's not even formulaic shojo! i nice shojo wouldn't show

date rape scenes! date rape by the way can be defined as sexual assault by someone you know that's not consential. kyo goes around kissing misao in.... places.... and she says no, i don't want this but he just continues and she lets him. stand up for yourself girl! and at the end of chapter 25 or whatever, when kyo's about to be killed- SHE OFFERS TO HAVE SEX WITH HIM TO SAVE HIS LIFE. IN FRONT OF A CROWD PRETTY MUCH WTH?
well. at least that was what it implied by the cliff hanger. i stopped reading after that.
i'm not sure why this got an award and everything.it's an embarassment to manga and an embarasment to women.

At first I thought "Not ANOTHER one like this..." but the plot has picked up and it is starting to become more than a romance. So intense, hot and badass. I don't actually mind that she' s a tad weak, as every once in awhile I like to see a manga where the girl needs to be saved by her dark knight. Personally, I think he is such an awesome male lead that he makes up for her weakness. I see why this is so popular and I highly recommend it. Also an update: Sh** just got amazing! Seriously, near chapter 55 it begins to get intense!!!

Interesting at first, But...
Actually, this manga is really nice and good. But what made the manga "look" terrible is probably Misao. I hated the fact that she's so annoying and weak, relying on Kyou all the time. Not to mention that she's so stupid. Honestly. Especially in chapter 50. Whatever did she do that for?! (Not giving spoilers! Hurhur! x3) Her action was so silly that when I read chapter 51, I still think that what she "did' wasn't necessary. She said she knows it's betrayal to Kyou, but why did she still do it? No common sense at all. The fact I gave it a 10 because of the other characters like Kyou and the 7 retainers as well as the flow of the story. More like the plot. It's unique and interesting. I LOVE THE TRIPLETS! They are so adorable! Another reason why I love Sakurakouji Kanoko's work! Her chibis are really awesome. It makes you wanna pinch her chibi character's cheeks.
I hope the manga is not too long, although I already read the latest japanese raw. Misao and Kyou's relationship might be lovely dovey, but I find Misao always confuse herself as well as doubting her love or Kyou's love for her. And then, she kept on thinking of whether to follow Kyou's path or her families. Then in the end she wants to choose Kyou. What the hell? If she already made that decision, then she have to let go the other one and forget about it. Ugh. I hope the mangaka will fix her up a little in the end. PLEASE!!!
The only reason why i'm still reading this is because i feel too bad dropping a series that i've been following for so long. However, plot wise, this series is getting annoying. Oh and the main protagonist is dumb, weak, and ANNOYING. Maybe it's just me, but i'm getting annoyed with everything about this manga. Maybe i should drop this series after all. yup, gonna do that.
dropped after few chapters..
the start of this manga seems rather original, so i went on with it. I decided to drop it after realising that the female lead is rather weak.
If you're into weak clingy crying female leads.. then this manga is for you =\
So much better
At first i thought it was gonna be one of those long draggy pointless stories but wow has it gotten better, by around chapter 30+ it gets REALLY good. Not that before chapter30 it's rubbish but it was just normal I suppose. Idk what people are saying about being unable to like characters cos I love some of them.. I think you should really give it a try

read up until ch 28 and I love it!
Although there are some things I don't understand just yet, I already love the manga very much. The relationship between Kyo and Misao is absolutely beautiful and I can definitely sense the love between them. Misao may be naive and useless at times, but a change happened when she went to meet Shou(yeah, it was stupid but she wasn't that useless. she didn't cry for Kyo's help - she did her best to win Shou all by herself). The most annoying thing is that she (as well as many other shoujo girls) gets shocked whenever her boyfriend kisses her or tries to go further than kissing.

Really, when "the Dragon" asks Kyo to have sex with his little sister in order to save her life. Misao was all like: "NOOO!! I'm the only one who can give sex to Kyo!!" while she's the one who can't at the moment.
Kyo may be a pervert but he's not bad. But seriously it is a bit rare to have a non-pervert male protagonist in shoujo.
I've been reading this manga for years so it seems like it'd be a waste to drop it now but, if I didn't have the need to finish everything I start, I would drop it in a heartbeat. I don't think I hated it at the beginning but the last volumes have been hell. I can't stand the main character, really, I hate everything about her, and the rest of the characters are average at best. I feel like this manga, much like Vampire Knight, has overstayed its welcome. It keeps surprising me by becoming worse all the time. I dread the coming of each new chapter and I wish this mangaka would do me the favor of ending my pain.... EDIT: can't stand it anymore. Dropping it.

I stopped reading after volume 6 but picked it up again seeing that it made past 15 volumes....
The base plot is interesting enough in the beginning (although cliche). The side characters are cute. The main female lead is your typical "bubbly, naive, ignorant" heroine. She can't be any more useless. I would have rated this a 7 if it ended earlier with her resolving the issues between the two brothers, but a lot of useless over-used plots prolonged it. Therefore, a 4--for efforts. The author try to installed a "difficult but overcoming love that will prevails" theme which is why I think this manga is too melo-dramatic, especially when I read the heroine's repeated speeches of their love.
