Best action manga ever
Rating: 10.0 / 10.0

Hiroaki Samura has written one of the finest manga ever. His art and ability to display action is unmatched, and no one has been able to craft so many engaging, complex characters (that end up stealing protagonism from the main characters). It's a shame that it ended, but it does so in such an amazing way that does this flawless title justice. A must read for everyone.

Art of gore

The art of this series is the one outstanding element that can't be criticized. Pencil-thin lines coupled with good figure drawing technique shows off the artistic training and basic drawing fundamentals the mangaka possesses. The premise of the story is also interesting. But in recalling this work, the similarities between this and a piece of Tarantino work could not be denied. Except the dialogue sadly cannot measure up.
The fights are interesting at first, but the weapons get more ludicrous and the reasons for fighting get more shallow as the series progresses. There's little entertainment to be had as the characters seem bent on mutual destruction with little to no self-reflection or thought of any deeper purpose to the fighting. In fact, the presence of the immortal Manji seems to catalyze the whole blood-bath to higher levels of pointlessness. Characters seem to become less cognizant of their own mortality.
Characterization also gets thrown to the wind because as quickly as someone gets introduced you expect them to become dead or maimed not too long after. The main characters also lose some of their allure in the process. Rin never stops being annoying, Manji never stops being the sloppy fighter that relies on his immortality. Probably the only reason Anotsu remains interesting is due to lack of exposure, and villains are more interesting by nature.
That brings me to the central conflict, which is where is the conflict? We started with a revenge plot but Rin seems less and less focused on that. There is the plot of itto-ryu versus the shogunate which gets far too much face-time when we don't even have a side to root for! They're both BAD GUYS. In addition, the parties of interest seem to have more coincidences/bad luck/good luck/horrendous decisions than absolutely necessary, even in a manga. Habaki lies there comatose, guilty of horrible human experimentation and you don't kill him? Even if you've never read a book, watched tv or movies, you know that one will bite you in the ass.
In summary, the plot is fraying into tatters, the characters mostly present as fodder, the dialogue borders on inane, but the art is unique. Please have somebody collaborate on a manga with this guy.

A definite must-read. The art is AMAZING, really beautiful in a unique, realistic way... and it's just got this authentic, deep rich feel to it. The plot is so fascinating and full of twists and turns, and complete with battles, gore (but not like disgusting gore)... I think the characters are so well-drawn and written too. I usually don't like seinen stuff but this one just drew me in from the minute I read the first chapter.

An interesting storyline and Hiroaki's unusual drawing style (also author of CAT, I believe) blend in this samurai-era manga.

I have mixed feelings about this manga. I picked it up, not knowing what to expect, but I found the story interesting and addicting. For some reason, it really reminded me of Samurai Deeper Kyo, so I continued reading. I continued reading even when I questioned some of the content in the story; some of it is just so violent and nasty that I found myself revolted, but intrigued.

The art isn't bad. I actually like it, except that some of the scenes are a little shocking to me. But reading this manga practically prepared me for every other mature seinen I've read since. I mean, there are plenty of other gory mangas out there and the few that I've delved in are nothing compared to this one.

This manga isn't bad. It's actually quite good. But the maturity level of this manga is a lot higher than your average shounen. That's why it's seinen. I did enjoy reading through parts of this series, but I'll probably never be able to pick up this manga-ka's other works, especially Bradherley no Basha.

Saw 20 is out, but I'm at v19. Heard it's going to end soon but the story is still in the middle of somewhere. Manji excercise his romance of samurai by bearing every sort of brutal attacks on his body. While Rin seems to be growing up alot despite of still being weak. Wonder where would their journey end. The introduction of another pair of wanderers should be bring some impact on them.
Pretty good drawings as usual, stylish sketches. Not many authors are drawing like this. The degree of violence / gore is pretty high.

The art is really something. I love the way Samura-sensei frames the deathblows with Japanese style ornaments and flowers. It's really gorgeous. If I could afford it, I would buy the manga simply for the artwork.

Few gripes I have with the manga:
First of all, Rin is really not my kind of girl. I know she's supposed to be weak and all but I find her actions really stupid and bordering on pathetic.

Second, I don't like how Dark Horse flipped the whole thing. What's the point in cutting it all up and sticking it back in the same order? They may as well have just done it right to left like everyone else. I have spotted some inconsistencies as a result of this. And it's probably why the books cost so much.

Which bring me on to the third gripe.

Awesome is a good description. Artwork is stunningly addictive and there is no room for boredom between the covers. A must read for action junkies.
