Description
Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family, but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Now a full-fledged Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits, and along with Rukia, who is slowly regaining her powers, it's Ichigo's job to both protect the innocent from Hollows and to help the spirits themselves find peace.

Stop reading after the first arc
Rating: 2.0 / 10.0
by Artimidorus

Reading the first arc, I loved it. Had some flaws, but was otherwise awesome. As someone else said, I really liked Ichigo's hollow form, and pretty much the whole of the first arc was good. Soul Society was new, and a creative way to see the After-life, and the characters seemed slightly different from most series I, personally, had read at the time.
Then.. it stopped. Then I had to quit reading, because it got a) extremely boring, b) I stopped being able to say/read the names of the places and people, this left me with the inability to connect to any of it, much less connect from chapter to chapter outside of "Hey, the big guy.. or the smart guy.. or the .. the guy.." type of things. The characters start undergoing stupid power-up to super-weak cycles that are unpredictable. One second they can beat anyone, next a low level enemy beats them to within an inch of their life..

As far as the anime, it was good until the same place and then the fillers started. I don't need to go into that, because it hurts my head to think of the stupidness. So in the end, read it.. read it until the end of the Soul Society arc, and then stop and never think "What happens after..." and you will be left with a good taste in your mouth. Read past that, and your IQ will drop for every chapter you experience.

Update because I decided to read, since I kept being told how awesome it was again..
My experience: Imagine the DBZ anime, specifically the Frieza arc... imagine that all drawn out into a manga. Now, split it by having each time someone talks, punches, or powers up become a chapter. Thousands of chapters, right? Yeah, this is Bleach as it is now.

"He cut a dozen buildings in half, split the world, and hit the boss! He must be.. must be... dang he isn't hurt at all and he is now powering up a single slice that will mortally wound, but not kill, us! Nooo! I need to power-up!! Okay, oh noes! He beat us all again, power-up!"

They could have made this entire arc like.. 10 chapters of real good story telling, but now it is nothing but fluff with almost nothing happening in each chapter, outside of making the main bad guy more and more God-like (I guess he does fully qualify as a superior God now, though?). Either way, read until Soul Society arc is over, and then close the book and remember the fond memories, because if you read past that.. you won't have any left. You will end up a dried up husk of "I don't care" like many other Bleach readers, who only read the manga still because they need to have an end, an end or a death. Either or.

Great plot. Great characters. Great art. The story, however, is likened to a turtle. Slow... very, very slow.
"Ha! You think you have me?! I'll show you!" "No! It can't be! A new super power?!"
[next chapter]
"Ha! You think you have me?! I'll show you!" "No! It can't be! A new super power?!"
[next chapter, ad nauseam.]

It's so frustrating. Someone kill someone, somewhere. SOMETHING!! The story isn't going anywhere right now. It started off so well. It's like DragonBall Z, where they spend 5 episodes "powering-up" for their "ultimate attack."

Amp you're entirely wrong...you cant say we haven't read other mangas...b/c for all you know Ive read more than you. This is why comparing manga to other manga isn't genrally a good idea...Bleach is awesome in its own way...the story keeps you interested..by your comment looks like you just want to see flashy fights...not all manga readers only care to see action pal...Maybe you're reading the wrong manga confused

The people who say its getting repetitive..just shut up and stop reading manga...apparantly you lost the meaning of enjoyment. Every manga is bound to be repetitive..there's only a certain amount of ways to develop the story...Naruto and bleach is not dying IMO, you're just not seeing what you want to see and so losing interest...don't make other ppl not read it just b/c you can't handle reading for long periods of time...go read one-shots IMO

Bleach is great for those who love action. Drama is decent, fighting is detailed, everything about is overall little better. However the characters and attacks in the recent chapters aren't too great. The attacks are just blobs of white ink and the characters aren't too interesting anymore. But I've still continue to read it even to this day because of it's artwork. The best I can give this is a 7.8

Do yourself a favor and drop it after the Rescue Rukia arc, everything after that is all dragged on. Kubo trying to create some suspenseful moments and plot twists but failing to do so miserably.

My biggest issue with this series is Ichigo is the main character but all he has is:
Getsuga Tenshou
Bankai
Hollowfication (Don't even count the full hollowfication vs Ulquiorra)
And that new thing I forgot the name in the recent chapters

How can he learned his hollowfication but can't even use Cero like everyone else? Then he always has some magical powerup during or directly before battle and goes to win.

With all that said I love Bleach's art the most, but creativity-wise One Piece beats it. (Don't forget I said creativity-wise, not in general drawing characters, but different looks and so on) I look forward to Kubo's new work though, I only keep reading it cause I read so far and only takes 10 seconds to read Bleach's chapters nowadays anyways.

Started out with a bang and just went downhill

As most people would agree, I would have to say that Bleach started out quite strong and the idea of shinigami and hollow was original and fresh. I love the Soul Society arc, when Ichigo and the gang goes to save Rukia and we get to see the Gotei 13. The arc with the Espada was not bad either, but the quality of originality of this manga dropped but it was still worth reading... that is, before they introduced all new characters and fullbring. It just seems like a desperate move of Kubo Tite, wanting the prolong the series instead of ending it with Aizen. I no longer read Bleach because the plot is so banal now, but I have enjoyed the series thus far up to that point.

I don't really care what other people say about the manga supposing to end. Naruto should've ended when they defeated the evil snake guy, but no they are STILL GOING ON. You just can't deny it, good manga should be as long as it can. Just like Detective Conan, it's like at 780 chapters and it's still going strong. Bleach is great, that's all there is to it.

I really enjoyed Bleach but it just seems to be going down hill. It feels like the story is being forced to go on and the arc right now feels like one of the bad fillers in the anime. In my opinion it should of ended in the last arc.

Here again with a freshly-updated review to account for the end of the Fake Karakura town arc, and the beginning of what appears to be the "Undo the end of the Fake Karakura town" arc.

Plot: There still doesn't appear to be any overarching plot. Unlike other shonen, our hero here doesn't have any vague long-term goal. It's more like "Oh look, an enemy. I go kill it now." Rinse and repeat.

Length: 48 volumes, and counting, with no end in sight. And supposedly it's only halfway through. Nuff said.

Characters: There's a bunch of them. There's bound to be at least one you like. Emotional moments between characters are rare gems, but still tend to be very poignant when they show up. Overall the characters are an enjoyable and likeable bunch, but some suffer from lack of development due to the extremely large cast.

Art: I actually like the art pretty well. The only issue I have with it is that all the characters have become very standardized and hairstyles and clothes are pretty much the only way to distinguish them.

Possibly offensive: Lots of boobs and ridiculously stripperiffic outfits. Pretty much the kind of stuff you shouldn't be surprised to find in a shonen. Lots of blood and occasional sexual jokes. Oh yeah, and some almost-yuri.

Other Stuff: When it comes to Bleach, I experience one of three things when I read a new chapter: "WTF awesome", cautiously optimistic ambivalence, and just plain "WTF?!". The entire fight against Aizen was pretty much one giant "WTF?!". I won't go so far as to call it a wallbanger, because it was something more than that. It was more like I got trolled left, right, and sideways. Then I realized:

Stopping to think and try to reason out what's going on in Bleach is bad for your brain. You'll enjoy it a lot better if you just go with it. Just accept the series for what it is---complete with hax Aizen, plotholes, and deus ex machina powerups---and it's actually pretty entertaining.

-.- theres no strategy in the fighting in Bleach besides spamming a crud load of attacks till the other person dies sometimes fights are more interesting if theres a way to solve it in a new fashion not just spamming till the other person is dead
