Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family, but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Now a full-fledged Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits, and along with Rukia, who is slowly regaining her powers, it's Ichigo's job to both protect the innocent from Hollows and to help the spirits themselves find peace.

Why is it still this popular ?

I stumbled upon the anime many moons ago when is was still new and i was an older teen.
I liked it just fine but switched later to the manga because it was to drawn out and had to quit it entirely and even started to hate it. Now i am 24 and in retrospect i find that the first two are arcs (till Soul Society ended) are still decent but kindoff "empty". Just good art(but never backgrounds) and good ideas but not a lot of substance.

To quote strixflash "Bleach was never a plot driven manga" and that was true even then but when arc 3 stared the story completely stopped and the unending action-scenes became all like this.
Two "awesome" dudes meet then begin to stand in the air and beat each other with super-moves till someone wins or the agree to become friends and noone ever dies but the word "death / i´ll kill you" are the most dominant sentences in the entire manga. So after that arc was final over i quit and never looked back.
Apparently the manga still sucks(500+ chapters and a spin-off but still not over) and finally started to loose fans but i am thank god out. As many problems i have with One Piece and Naruto now i still have fun with them even if a am mostly a seinen and josei reader now but this manga i cannot recommend at all. Don´t even start its not worth your time or the hype. Read the rest of the Jump-Trinity or Berserk(the king of manga) instead.

Tite Kubo is a troll. Fact.

What kickstarted this manga off was attitude. It had a very in-your-face kind of approach to plot, it's characters and its powers. Then we got the Soul Society Arc, which was a well-executed damsel-in-distress arc with an M. Night Shyamalan moment at the end. This led into the Hueco Mundo arc, and the all out war. Again a damsel in distress plot to begin with, which turned into a 'find some way to defeat the omnipotent antagonist' plot. Now... I dunno what's happening now.

All right:- Pros
Fights - fantastic fights with well executed individual powers and moves.
Style - art and character design is utter top notch, always.
Kuchiki Rukia - I have a crush on her.
Humour - often very, very funny.

Pacing:- pages often comprise on one or two frames (usually closer to 3-5) with only a little happening each week. I remember comparing this to One Piece a year or two ago - with Bleach I was surprised that the chapter ended so soon, with One Piece I was often surprised there was so much of the chapter left.
Characters:- almost all have some kind of backstory, but even that is often quite shallow in execution with very little depth or believability. Plus I hate antagonists who are utterly overpowered and arrogant. They tend to make up for this in the 'Style' and 'humour' Pros I mentioned already. Except Aizen.
Plot:- Fighting, damsel in distress + 'what a tweest' moments. Unoriginal and repeptetive, overall.

Tite Kubo is a troll simply because of how he paces this bl**ding manga. Sense the frustration. People have theorized that's he's some kind of divinity simply for the way he keeps his audience whilst successfully trolling them, every. single. week.

Better than most, but still... once you've finished this manga Kubo, there will be nothing to stop us from visiting retribution on you... 7/10

As most people would agree, I would have to say that Bleach started out quite strong and the idea of shinigami and hollow was original and fresh. I love the Soul Society arc, when Ichigo and the gang goes to save Rukia and we get to see the Gotei 13. The arc with the Espada was not bad either, but the quality of originality of this manga dropped but it was still worth reading... that is, before they introduced all new characters and fullbring. It just seems like a desperate move of Kubo Tite, wanting the prolong the series instead of ending it with Aizen. I no longer read Bleach because the plot is so banal now, but I have enjoyed the series thus far up to that point.

I don't really care what other people say about the manga supposing to end. Naruto should've ended when they defeated the evil snake guy, but no they are STILL GOING ON. You just can't deny it, good manga should be as long as it can. Just like Detective Conan, it's like at 780 chapters and it's still going strong. Bleach is great, that's all there is to it.

This manga started out really, really, really good. I absolutely loved it up until Ichigo saves Rukia. After that the manga gets really boring, drawn out, and repetative. The fight scenes especially get extremely long. The plot no longer seems that interesting and about the only good thing that happens later on in the manga is that Hitsugaya seems to show up a lot more. Orihime just gets more and more annoying and one of the most interesting character, Ulquiorra, ends up dying. So overall I think this manga started out really well, but like a lot of other good mangas like Naruto and Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge, it's just getting to be way too long. I think the mangaka just doesn't want to end this manga even though it should've ended a long time ago.

hmm. . bleach. . there was a time that it was hailed amongst the top anime and manga that i heard of. . but now. . it just killed itself. . for some reason and i know some of you if not all, noticed that it just doesnt appeal anyone anymore well not to me anyway. . whenever there is a new chapter in bleach i still check it. . but i just scan and not bother myself to read anything cause i know it would only waste my time if i read it. . the story was about a person(ichigo) who became a shinigami to rid the world of hollows with his band of merry men(uryu and chad if i remember correctly), women(rukia and inoue i think) and a cute lion mascot(kon). . but now. . were in heavens name are they!!!! and the story just became another hero who wants to beat the "ALL POWERFUL,GODLIKE,HOLLOWRIFIC,BADASS,COOL, and HANDSOME" boss(aizen). . lets just say that bleach is like a pyramid, as you get to the top. . it gets smaller and smaller and smaller. .

In the road GREAT to S**T BAG

Once in a distant time, I was a HUGE fan of bleach. Now, I'm too much displeased, that I can't even say that reading the past-soul society phase is anything near to "worthy"

"The characters start undergoing stupid power-up to super-weak cycles that are unpredictable. One second they can beat anyone, next a low level enemy beats them to within an inch of their life.."

That alone just summarizes everything in the after-soul society phase.
The power scale were just fucked up. You don't know who is strong, who is not.

The manga is all about showing power and skills, but when stuff turns to completely random, it's just pointless to see badass moves, if in the next chapter the hero's tides can change from "absolute ownage" to "absolutely owned".
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Ichigo beated the crap out of kenpachi. Than, Ichigo gets the crap beated out by Noitora. Than, Kenpachi beats the crap out of Noitora. WTF?. And than, Ichigo fights Ulquiorra, and in the end, beats the crap out of Ulquiorra, who is supposed to be a lot stronger than Noitora, by the use of some deus ex machina hax. WTF²?
It's too much of inconsistency in the power scale for me.

The manga's main attraction, not to say the only one, are the battles, and the skill show. Alright, It's cool to see all those cool powers, the cool bankais, the cool vaizards, and so on... but, with a fucked up power scale, the cool powers show off becomes pointless.

You NEVER know what is going to happen, and when things are fucked up, there comes someone to the aid of the good guys in the nick of time. I know that this is overused in shounens, but Bleach just over-overuses it.

I just hope Kubo will put his mind on the tracks and, in the future, give us some good stuff like in the first arc.

Stop reading after the first arc

Reading the first arc, I loved it. Had some flaws, but was otherwise awesome. As someone else said, I really liked Ichigo's hollow form, and pretty much the whole of the first arc was good. Soul Society was new, and a creative way to see the After-life, and the characters seemed slightly different from most series I, personally, had read at the time.
Then.. it stopped. Then I had to quit reading, because it got a) extremely boring, b) I stopped being able to say/read the names of the places and people, this left me with the inability to connect to any of it, much less connect from chapter to chapter outside of "Hey, the big guy.. or the smart guy.. or the .. the guy.." type of things. The characters start undergoing stupid power-up to super-weak cycles that are unpredictable. One second they can beat anyone, next a low level enemy beats them to within an inch of their life..

As far as the anime, it was good until the same place and then the fillers started. I don't need to go into that, because it hurts my head to think of the stupidness. So in the end, read it.. read it until the end of the Soul Society arc, and then stop and never think "What happens after..." and you will be left with a good taste in your mouth. Read past that, and your IQ will drop for every chapter you experience.

Update because I decided to read, since I kept being told how awesome it was again..
My experience: Imagine the DBZ anime, specifically the Frieza arc... imagine that all drawn out into a manga. Now, split it by having each time someone talks, punches, or powers up become a chapter. Thousands of chapters, right? Yeah, this is Bleach as it is now.

"He cut a dozen buildings in half, split the world, and hit the boss! He must be.. must be... dang he isn't hurt at all and he is now powering up a single slice that will mortally wound, but not kill, us! Nooo! I need to power-up!! Okay, oh noes! He beat us all again, power-up!"

They could have made this entire arc like.. 10 chapters of real good story telling, but now it is nothing but fluff with almost nothing happening in each chapter, outside of making the main bad guy more and more God-like (I guess he does fully qualify as a superior God now, though?). Either way, read until Soul Society arc is over, and then close the book and remember the fond memories, because if you read past that.. you won't have any left. You will end up a dried up husk of "I don't care" like many other Bleach readers, who only read the manga still because they need to have an end, an end or a death. Either or.

Great plot. Great characters. Great art. The story, however, is likened to a turtle. Slow... very, very slow.
"Ha! You think you have me?! I'll show you!" "No! It can't be! A new super power?!"
[next chapter]
"Ha! You think you have me?! I'll show you!" "No! It can't be! A new super power?!"
[next chapter, ad nauseam.]

It's so frustrating. Someone kill someone, somewhere. SOMETHING!! The story isn't going anywhere right now. It started off so well. It's like DragonBall Z, where they spend 5 episodes "powering-up" for their "ultimate attack."

Amp you're entirely cant say we haven't read other mangas...b/c for all you know Ive read more than you. This is why comparing manga to other manga isn't genrally a good idea...Bleach is awesome in its own way...the story keeps you your comment looks like you just want to see flashy fights...not all manga readers only care to see action pal...Maybe you're reading the wrong manga confused

The people who say its getting repetitive..just shut up and stop reading manga...apparantly you lost the meaning of enjoyment. Every manga is bound to be repetitive..there's only a certain amount of ways to develop the story...Naruto and bleach is not dying IMO, you're just not seeing what you want to see and so losing interest...don't make other ppl not read it just b/c you can't handle reading for long periods of time...go read one-shots IMO
