it was so great

I'm starting to think that its actually not Hoshino drawing this manga at all... after the hiatus because her wrist she just accepted that she cant draw anymore and got into a big slump, so she just passed the whole project to her assistant(s) who gambled on it, but lost, cause the last chapters are just terrible. Its caos. Where are the beautiful fighting scenes? The fine art? This could be explainded with the wrist problem, if this was the oly problem. But the style, the story and even the characters changed so much that I just cant believe that this is tha same mangaka who started the whole story. I'm dissapointed, and Im so sorry that one of my fav manga is destroyed.

I just am totally confused by the plot jump from the chapter before the hiatus and after. I really couldn't understand how they got to such a panicked scene... but oh well. I decided to give it some time to get much more chapters out, so that I can read and dissect it at my leisure... so I really haven't read much of the new art style.

I understand she hurt her wrist, but I just can't help but be wistful about the old style.... I was really in love with it.... oh well... I just have to get over it. Maybe, as she recovers, it will slowly morph back into the old style (big maybe)? Change in general is something I have issues dealing with, but I'm trying to keep an open mind.

I was just totally confused by the first post-hiatus chapter..... If you haven't gotten that by now.

Flame, Flame, Go Away

There's been a lot of complaint about DGM's changing art style and plotline. Guys, changes like that are natural in a series, and show how the characters are changing. A looser representation of Allen in a panel, for example, represents his laziness or noncompliance. Just because he's losing his cute, naive demeanor in the course of the war doesn't mean you can attack the author and her prize series.
I myself have been happy with the latest chapters. We ARE in fact solving some of the mysteries of the series as we move into the 190th chapter (Alma Karma and Kanda's lotus, etc) and even earlier (Cross' disappearance and the appearance of the 14th). Pay attention, readers. Notice the captivating plot that is developing.
My only question is: where has Lavi gone? We havent seen him since before the Kanda/Allen paris mission. I hope he enters the story again soon.
For readers starting the series, the 16 volumes that are available is the US now are INCREDIBLE. they are my favorite manga and I'm sure you'll enjoy them too. <3

It was so good...

The manga used to be one of my favorites but now it has corroded to your run-of-the-mill shounen manga. But what really killed it for me was the new art style which came with the serialization change. Most of the time you can't say whats going on, in fights the scenes are so messy I have absolutely no idea what the characters are doing most of the time.
I can't say D Gray man is awful but there are dozens of mangas like it is now out there, it's a pitty I really enjoyed reading it.

I feel that I can not agree with some of the latest comments about DGM quality being worse. In my opinion it got SO MUCH BETTER. Especially the art, it's so beautiful I could stare at it for hours! The plot is much more interesting, too. It got more serious and complex. I mean, at first it was just some average shonen manga, that I could just read from time to time and forget about it in an instant. Now I wait impatiently for every chapter. It's a pity I can read it only once a month, but on the other hand chapters are longer <3
Overall, I'm glad for the change in plot and art, I like it so much better now <3

goes downhill

I really liked this manga at first but it kind of just spiraled downhill. Everything from the story to the art became a jumbled mess. The current artwork looks like it's some distorted blob style. Just compare the latest chapter and the first chapter and you'll know what I'm talking about.

There's been so many mysteries: Noahs, Innocence, Akuma, generals, some guy who looks like Hitler, traitorous clown, teleportation ship, disappearance of generals, half-Akuma, 10 more Noahs, the Millenium Earl changing his appearance. The list keeps growing every chapter with no attempt to shed any light on them, so it's become impossible for me to even remember them all between chapter releases. With so many subplots, the story seems to be shifting back and forth erratically and there's just no room for character development

I don't know what happened, but as far as I'm concerned, the author succeeded in making this manga totally unreadable. I dropped this manga, but if you want to give it a try, just be prepared for it to get frustratingly bad.

Well, it's really a good read, I think. I mean, yes, the beginning is all sorts of jumbles of characters, but once you actually get an idea who all the characters are to begin with, the story line flows on smoothly. The evolving weapons are also not "suddenly in 5 days I could do something mashed up together that took everyone their whole lives to make because I'm so smart" thing. I don't like that, so...OK, whatever.
The story might seem boring at times, but that's only [I think] because it's one of those "in between-ark chapters," so naturally, it's more boring.
I like how the mangaka slowly goes one by one cover the character's history. It's really interesting, if you ask me. Especially the Kanda ark. That's a big one (as a fan of Kanda, I was kawing and gawing over everything [in the recent chapters].)
Some people don't like the art style. OK, well, I mean, it's changed, but doesn't Allen (in my point of view) look more HEALTHY? He used to look...really ill (maybe mentally cracked [JK]) and well...pitiful. Let's leave it at that. Plus, is the drawing style really THAT bad? I mean, come on, it's not horrible...
Also, the art (again). The fuzziness. Yes, I understand the confusion. But there's not a whole ton of detail, so you really don't have to read it once or twice over again. Plus, you can tell who's who by the words and stuff (and by the drawing, it's not HORRIBLE, as I've said. Actually really good.) OK, one more thing about the art. D. Gray-Man's been on hiatus because the mangaka hurt her wrist, so it might be a little shaky and stuff. In my opinion, she's doing really good. Plus, she probably really wants to keep the manga going. (Also, if it's quick, at least it'll keep going. If it stopped for a long time [making a "good quality manga"] maybe she wouldn't have sponsors and whatever helping her. Then it'd STOP.) Back to the point, hurting your writs is a big one for a mangaka, and it'll be really hard for her to come back to the original drawing. A little change won't hurt. Plus, it puts a lot of pressure and strain on the mangaka to ink the stuff and reach ultra high-critique standards. Did I mention this before? SHE HURT HER WRIST.
*o*

I love DGM

I picked up this series long ago when I had seen a preview of it in Shonen Jump. I was immediately drawn to how lovely the art and characters looked. Then one day, a year or so later, I saw the series at my local bookstore. I opened it and didn't close it until I was finished. I stayed in that bookstore for a while reading the different volumes. It's a great series. Allen is a tad too goody-goody at the start, but as you read on, he matures. There is great storyline and character development. Even the evil characters are lovable (I mean come on! The Earl is a jolly old fat guy with a different top hat every time) I really love DGM. To this day it's my favorite manga/anime series. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes shonen manga, or just manga with that lovely historical flare. I just hope it doesn't get a bad rep because it's a popular shonen series...

Ok it isnt often that i go out of my way to actually review a manga like this but i just had to in this case.

At first the plot seems laughable in its own way, seriously a villain who is a big fat alien looking character, and monsters that look like a balloon with a canons over it, and the goal is to defeat these things... wow was the first thing i thought as it sounded rediculous.

But then it all started to change these balloons started "evolving" changing into different levels and becoming much credible things to actually fight, then the Noah come along which started to increase my interest even more and before i know it i am absolutely hooked.

The plot takes some time to actually get going but once it appears you find yourself unable to stop reading, the characters are unique such as Allen, Originally he starts of as a goody-goody which kinda annoyed me but then he changes, he starts becoming really cool and with the occurance of the "Musician" it becomes even better.

The super powers start to become more interesting as at first i was not so keen on wow look allen has a demonic arm thing yay, but then even those improve.

Now dont look down on the manga for the start, i am so glad that i have a sort of 50 chapter rule where i dont give up unless i am really finding it hard just to read a chapter due to bordom, because it really does pick up and become one of my favourite manga.

I believe that this is/will be the successor/rival of the top 3 battle manga it has the potential, the characters, plot.

It does/did go on hiatus alot but it restarts November 4th 2009 as a monthly serialization so it may not go on Hiatus as much.

Well thats all i wanted to say, i'd give it higher than a 10/10 if i could but i cant lol.

Happy reading x
