Description
From ANN:
Gats, known as the Black Swordsman, seeks sanctuary from the demonic forces attracted to him and his woman because of a demonic mark on their necks, and also vengeance against the man who branded him as an unholy sacrifice. Aided only by his titanic strength gained from a harsh childhood lived with mercenaries, a gigantic sword, and an iron prosthetic left hand, Gats must struggle against his bleak destiny, all the while fighting with a rage that might strip him of his humanity.

Warning: This manga is for mature audiences only, since it has sexual content and graphic violence (gore, blood, rape, etc). Definitely not for the weak hearted.

I'm not going to praise this manga with fancy long paragraphs, or by dissing other mangas in my comment. I'll simply state that Berserk is...raw emotion.

That's the best way to describe it.

Also - while the current chapters have a mesmerizing amount of beauty and detail, they come out at a rate of...um...4 chapters a year or so? Don't expect this manga to finish in the author's lifetime.

I love this manga. One of the best manga I've read. Usually all those big "good" manga people talk about usually get me bored after about 10 volumes. but his one, over 30 volumes. Soo good, stayed up all night reading. My friend introduced this to me last year. I read it during free time at school...I thought it was just a pointless, violence manga with no story line. so I stopped reading it. Another friend recommended it to me. she told me to go over at least 4 volumes. So I did, this manga was unbelievable. Its somehow shows history in a fantasy way. It captures a true picture of those dark times. They story is strong and deep (in a sense of complexity). There is much more to be said about this story. If you decide to read it, don't give up after a chapter or 2, read atleast the 1st 4 volumes.

This manga is excellent. Really quite wonderful. The art can be a bit sketchy at times, but thats just the affects.

Overall, its excellent. =D

I have read blade of the immortal and other sword fighting manga. This is a masterpiece that could go on and on... And still won't free my thirst for more. The setting is just perfect with realism on how people were in the old times. How ignorant the christians were in the older times. It somehow points some true history but not in a direct way. Such how priests were in the old days and how women and children were raped.

This manga doesn't need art. The story itself will bring you to ecstasy. Questions will pop out like "How far will his rage bring him?" stuff like that. Besides he isn't the super hero everyone would imagine. Getting sliced up yet still somehow manages. It's just amazing. The anime isn't hardcore but the manga version really goes my style. Sex,Violence and a bit romance was the trigger. Add some magic in the final volumes = masterpiece. Adding a lord of the rings effect makes it even greater. It has the Conan the barbarian feel also. It really is the greatest sword manga ever. I give this a 10 rating. And amongst the 10 rating it deserves to be the top 1.

A hero shouldn't have a pretty face.
A hero shouldn't be immortal with special powers.
A hero shouldn't rely on purely magic and crappy effects like what (griffith) does.
A hero shouldn't get a chick he can obtain so easily.
A hero shouldn't be a small twirp.

A hero is a mental state.

A hero must struggle the impossible! And that is what makes berserk a unique story telling. The hero wasn't born to be a hero. He made his own destiny and cut his way through no matter if its cutting a child or an old man. A true swordsman slices his way through everything. No mercy! Off with the head! May it be a mortal or a god. Go gatz!

The entire mange doesn't even need to be a manga. It can be written in words and it would still be a master piece. It is 100% the story that fills me with excitement!

This is a very good manga if you feel for reading a brutal manga for a change. If you don't like reading a manga which is mainly based on extreme violence you should'nt even bother reading it.
(if thats the case go read Mx0, it's a very funny and good manga with great characters and story without any violence)

Back to berserk.
I can't say the art is bad like some of you other dudes say, Imo the art in this manga really good, its dark and gloomy and fits the enviorment and the story like a hand in a glove

Berserk is by far, one of the most overrated manga I have read.

Story wraps you in? Hardly. I would say the opposite. The excessively gratuitously violent scene in the beginning was enough for me to put down the manga the first time. Why? Because it was counting on the shock value to draw in the readers to keep reading. It's the same as the headlines of a newspaper articles. But I'm supposed to be reading a manga, not a newspaper article. The story also wasn't able to keep me reading more and more, because there was, actually, no story until somewhere in the third volume. Again, it was counting on the violence, gore, sex, etc. to keep readers entertained in the meanwhile. I can't say anything about character development, because to be fair, I didn't read enough of it to be able to judge that.

Artwork is great? In my opinion, it isn't. It is a different style that uses a massive amount of contrast between white and black. Shading is done by lines on different points in the grayscale. So, what you get from the combination of these two methods is the artwork of Berserk, an incredibly annoying pixelated effect. It almost felt like the whole thing was done in photoshop, with a couple of filters; there's absolutely no smoothness at all when it comes to artwork. Consequently everything sticks out like a sore thumb.

Character? Ultra-strong, cold, muscle man fighting against all odds with only himself and a small companion? Feels familiar, doesn't it? There's nothing wrong with rehashing old themes, as long as there's a creative twist to it. In the few volumes I have read, though, there has been nothing to lead me to believe that there is.

For those of you who will inevitably say that it takes longer to get in to it, I will have to respond: Why do I have to wait? If the manga was really actually as great as you say it is, there's no reason for me to have to wait. I should want to go further into it.

Clearly, I don't. This is my own personal view on this manga, but I have a distinct feeling it'll get lost in all the fanboy-ness that surrounds it.

Definitely the best manga I've ever read. The art is simply beautiful, the story wraps you in. The characters all have their own unique thing about them, and development is constant throughout the manga. One prime example is in chapter 294, with Silat speaking about the two sides. I'm trying not to give spoilers.

Honestly, I don't really like how Puck is becoming just comic relief, along with Isidoro. I loved Puck in the beginning... At the beginning of the manga, it was just Guts alone. Now with all these people tagging alone, it is slowly resembling other manga of the same genre. Like what Magnum said, I'd rather just have Guts, Caska and Puck. I felt it's meant to be a dark manga... I don't really mind the other people, I guess. It goes with the plot very well, so it's all good.

Kentaro Miura is a freakin' genius.

me have been following Berserk for a while and me love how the hero learns to open himself more over the series and now is his greatest challenge me would say by far in getting back his love one and getting rid of the sacrifice mark.... gotta love his new armor too.... poor gats constant battle with his inner demon and the demon who mark him...............

11/10 i would say for art, story and character build up.... A DIE DIE MUST READ MANGA
