There is a world of myth and magic that intersects ours, and only a special few can see it. Misao Harada is one such person, and she wants nothing to do with magical realms. She just wants to have a normal high school life and maybe get a boyfriend.
But she is the bride of demon prophecy, and her blood grants incredible powers, her flesh immortality. Now the demon realm is fighting over the right to her hand...or her life!
Black Bird received the 54th Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo manga.

standard shoujo fare with a bunch of cliches... childhood friends, rivals in family, student-teacher relationship with a bunch of bishies and suggestive scenes. if you've read one, you've read 'em all. nothing special about this.
She is a thinker and he is a mystery
I love how the romance is complicated by the question of motive. Kyo interesting - he goes after her persistently and she in turn considers the situation. She does not mindlessly falls in love and go with the flow because they are childhood friends or because he is handsome. I think what really draws me is her reactions to situations and trying to understand the mystery of who kyo is. The politics of his world should be interesting - i am looking forward to understanding that as well.

I dropped this manga a few years ago, then recently try to reread it again since i saw it has been completed. This one is okay for me. It's not bad but it's also not an outstanding serie either. Characters and the strenght of the story are standard shoujo. I like supernatural manga, especially ones involving japanese folklore, so the theme of this manga plus adding romance is perfect for me. I'm just thinking when reading it that the story could be developed better, to give more details about demon world, deeper interaction with other clans, and many things... Like this thing, i was curious about.. there had been more senka before/after edo period. If their fate ended up being food, eaten by demon.. Surely it exists a demon who is eternally young and immortal. Why they dont appear in the manga? Of course, i'm conscious that i'm reading a shoujo manga, which nevertheless focus only on romance with their demographic readers are teenagers. But even a simple story can be well developed and amazing depends on the skill of the mangaka. One thing i concern about is teenage pregnancy :/

i dont like how the mangaka set up misao character toward the ending, that she has no other dream except being kyo's bride but even before finishing high school she got pregnant... ._. Becomes a mother before a bride.... Even trying to abort the baby. She is sometimes spineless, like when kyo told her to go back to human side, joining raikou. She just followed it. Then told her to abort... she followed it, until doujouji woke her up. There are a lot of young girls reading and loving this manga... But surely i don't want to recommend this to girl below 18 yo. And then i was repulsed at how obsessive kyo toward misao that even his love for his son couldnt even compared with o.O?!
Finally, if you havent had experience of reading many manga, you can give it a try. But for an avid reader, this manga might not satisfy you.

Meh. It's the usual shoujo. Childhood friend turns into love. Of course, he's a tengu. But no biggie because he's quite a bishie. The way he licks her is highly suggestive. (I mean seriously. One part has him over her body sucking on her shoulder while she's panting for breath because she's hurt. If that's not suggestive, I don't know what is.)
black bird <3
i picked up this manga by accident and fell in love with it!!
This manga is bogged down with cliches..... but in a way that works! Yes, there is the whole teacher-student thing, and the lead seems to make everyone fall in love with her, but somehow it's not so bad! I like all of the characters so far. I have only read to chapter five, but from what I can see, Black Bird seems pretty promising. I just wish scans would come out sooner !
I've read until vol 5... i can say it's quite decent. nothing too great but it's still nice. i think the beginning was a lot better... i'm looking forward for the next chapters. =)
FIRST 10 out 10

Seriously, i have READ a lot of manga but none deserve a 10! I like how Misao is reacting. She isn't the type who just runs into a hot guy's arm just because he's hot and willing to marry her...! She did consider the fact that he's a monster and her future with him. I like how she measure carefully whether the Kyo is lying or not...( she's WAY better than Bella in Twilight...if you know what i mean) If you are chinese.......you ar in luck, u can read ahead to vol 4 and FARTHUR if you ar japanese...
It suck if u can read only english since there's only 5 chapters
DEFINITELy must read it!!!!
Better than "Love Monster"
As the subject says, Black Bird is far better than Love Monster (which I stopped reading after chapter 45). While the protagonist, Misao, is somewhat frustrating, I truly enjoy reading this. Also, if there wasn't some sort of conflict
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Misao's insistent refusal comes to mind
, then it wouldn't be very interesting at all. I think people who complain about characters whose actions annoy them or characters who don't act typically or necessarily with common sense should remember that (and not just with this manga; with others as well).
I didn't really like most kanako sensei's work, because I dont really like TOO corny mangas. But Black Bird is juust right, perfect for those who are into love monster. I prefer Black Bird over Love Monster in my opinion, since this series has so much drama and suspense you cant just get enough of this series. Yes, the storyline is almost alike, and the series is not TOO kiddy. The Art is just wondeful and I got a new favorite mangaka on my list =]
