Perhaps I'm biased about this, so I decided to ask: Which Genre Scanlation Groups are THE WORST about sharing projects?

Scanlation groups get... possessive over projects, and fur often flies when someone or another group edges in and tries to take over projects they believe aren't good enough or aren't moving fast enough.

It might be me, but I think it's the YAOI crowd, possibly because it's so small...

BUT - I dunno. Thus - I ask. 🤢

Yaoi? I don't really agree. Most of them usually try to spread it around or find new series to pick up (new or dropped). I would also hardly call the yaoi crowd 'small'. 🤣
The last big fight I remembered was shoujo, but I also remember stories of tussles in the the shounen crowd. So maybe one of those two?

I voted shoujo but some scanlation groups work on both shoujo and shonen. Inane MS vs. Dragon Voice definitely comes to mind whenever this pops up out of Google. ---> Their argument

Yep, shoujo groups are scary...they usually lock their releases, the only way to get them is to have some amount of posts ( 15, 40, I even saw 100 ). Being registered on their forum is a must anyway... 🤣

^ Don't worry. No bashing. ^_^ Haha. I love both Inane and DV. Just that incident is an example of how possessive one group can get. Thankfully, they got over that problem. It's been years now.

I think this thread's title should change a little because there are plenty of scanlation groups who can get a bit picky but they aren't bad. Oh and definitely notice a lot with many scanlation groups either making people d/l IRC for chapters or make them join forums (just for member count). The forum thing is alright, but when you join a lot of forums, then you might end up getting lazy just to register for another one. 😳

That is why I moved to IRC...

Anyway, my vote also goes to shoujo...

I'm surprised someone voted shounen as I feel they are the least possessive...look at all the shounen titles that are being scanslated by 2 or more groups like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Psyren, Fairy Tail etc...

It's a lot better now since it's become common-place for popular projects to have 1 or 2 groups trying to leach fans from the original group... personally, I don't think it's much of a problem as is. Just kind of an annoyance.

gg.
I agree, the yaoi crowd isn't what you can call small^^
Many shounen manga are popular.. I guess groups can fight over them..

Shoujo, obviously 🙂 . Because the manga that's hardest to get for me is shoujo-stuff, and because I've only seen shoujo groups closing down their sites because someone uploaded the manga elsewhere. And they're very touchy and easily offended in general, especially when it comes to groups doing same projects <_<
If you're scanning, I don't see the point in trying to lock away the manga for those of us who fail at IRC >:-( .

And on the opposite side, I think shounen and yaoi are the most easy-going groups. Most of the yaoi sites have the chapters up for ddl and shounen is extremely easy to find and widespread anyway.

Because I read so much shoujo, I seriously thought that project ownership was one of those fandom/etiquette unspoken rules things and that the shounen community was breaking only for popular projects where it'd be impossible to enforce. I totally thought it was the norm for scanlators.

Though I've gotta say, lately a lot of the shoujo groups seem to be getting more open (maybe it's just 'cause enough of 'em are new?) and at the least offer irc or forum, and plenty have irc, forum, and ddl.

It's the shoujo group. I know because I always check groups' FAQs and see which one allows permission or not. Since I can use IRC and bittorent, I'm not basing this on how they distribute their mangas but what they state in their rules and how friendly they sound. Not to say that all shoujo groups are like that. Some are extremely friends ^_^

I would say shounen/seinen groups are the most flexible in my experience so far.

Yaoi groups are somewhere in the middle.

I think both shoujo and shounen groups are kinda edgy about sharing projects. The last big fight I heard of was because of Ookiku Furikabutte and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
As far as yaoi groups are concerned, I think they're really relaxed about that kinda stuff nowadays. Usually, they wouldn't go for manga that are already (being) scanlated. I dare say that they even try to spread the "yaoi love" as much as possible with as many new yaoi manga as possible xD
