Here's the dealio. Putting out a new series, the title is in japanese, but there's a direct english equivalent that i use internally to talk about it because it's easier for me to remember and conveys what it's about in english. Now trying to decide what to call it when it gets put out.

but it seems most titles are referred to in the original jdm-land title. and previous efforts to bring out translated titles have mostly failed. I'm just here to confirm that the popular trend is to preserve the original title.

I personally prefer the title to stay in Japanese, in most cases. In some rare cases where all my efforts to remember the title in Japanese went down the drain... I settled to just remember them by the translation. But it's always nice to keep it with the Japanese title when possible.
Although nothing is keeping you from using both right? And there is also nothing more annoying than reading a manga for 3 years and not knowing what the title means...
In short, I prefer the usage of the original title to refer to the manga when possible. But a translation of that title is also something that I think is necessary...

i'll say japanese original title with western letters. So that it is more original ^__^ and it also depends on the translation they will translate the title.

some names in the original japanese are way to complex(YKK) and some names in english just sound stupid(chibi vampire)

As an entry in the "series info," I prefer to have the titles in the original Japanese, but in romaji, and then have the title as it is actually written on the originally published manga, in kanji/hiragana/katakana if that is the way it appears, under the "alternate title" section. The only exception is when it is obvious that the romaji is of katakana that was meant to represent an English word (but, the Japanese words should be left in romaji). The reason for my preference is that I like the title to be as close to the original as is reasonable (it should be in the English alphabet, because this is an English site), without sounding and/or looking dumb (writing out the katakana for English words looks dumb, and besides, the word was taken from the English language to begin with.) So, for example, the manga with the original title, コードネームはＣｈａｒｍｅｒ or コードネームはチャーマー should have Code Name wa Charmer as the main entry title, not "Koodo Neemu wa Chaamaa" nor "Koodo Neemu wa Charmer" nor "My Code Name is Charmer." These other ones can be added to the "alternate title" section if desired, but they should not be the main title.

It doesn't really matter to me, but sometimes the translations just don't make sense or they sound better in Japanese. Romaji works fine too.

Japanese is fine, especially since alternate titles are available. Sometimes I prefer the English versions, but only if I have a hard time remembering them. (unless I really enjoyed it, then it wouldn't matter what language it was in)

Kanji or Romaji, as long as it's in the original Japanese title.

Usually Japanese, since English titles sometimes sound strange. But maybe that's just me and what I read...

English, then it is easier to remember for people who don't know Japanese.

The "it sounds cooler in Japanese" thing is like the people who get tattoos of random Chinese characters. What's the point if you don't know the meaning?

Really it varies from title to title, though. If the original Japanese words don't have an equivalent in English, if the direct translation would have a different meaning in English than what the author intended, or something else that would make it bad, then keep it in Japanese. But for the most part, I think English should be used. (this is why I like that MU has an alternate title option 🙂 )

I'd prefer English translations. Those romaji titles are hard to remember and mostly meaningless to me.
