Umm... the NSA has been monitoring emails and the like for years. It's even allowed by the patriot act given specific conditions (most times that just do it anyway though, or at least that seems to be the case). I mean, it's mostly just data mining looking for specific terms, but that's not at all what's being proposed here- that much is already fact, more or less.

But, really, let's not overreact here. The internet is a realm of innovation. I have no doubts that people who want to pirate things will still be able to pirate things. A couple websites might vanish from US access, but that would be the extent of the damage. Nothing permanent.

And also, to those who suggest that a number of internet dwellers could get said senators unelected... I have my doubts about that. I suspect there isn't the capital necessary to wage any sort of publicity campaign, particularly one that out of necessity must oppose both primary parties. Not to mention the fact that a number of high-powered commerical industries are definitely very invested in the passing of this bill... even with a Ross Perot (who did, in fact, lose, lest we forget) or two, not much would happen on that front.

Now, all that said, the goal here is really to limit strictly illegal activity. I mean, we're on this site, so clearly piracy is something that most of us are a party to, but let's not forget that it is, in fact, illegal, and as a result we probably shouldn't be outraged when someone takes action to put a stop to illegal activity. We should accept it as a natural consequence and move on to the next step, whatever that might be. While the ACLU might oppose the bill on more legitimate grounds, I don't think that there's really much moral ground for pirates to be angry when a wrench gets tossed in the mechanism. But maybe that's just me.

Just wanted to ask, can someone give me an example of an internet petition which has served any real purpose?

If they want to pass it, they will, and no anonymous petition from lowly voters will change their mind. Laws like these are usually decided on even after being publicized.

...I'm starting to love my country now, seriously. I shall revel in piracy with my fellow co-nationals and be happy that none of our politicians can stop bickering with one another for long enough to get bright ideas such as these.

Hmm. While I understand that this is a bill meant to combat pirating, or something of the sort, the very idea of it is what puts me against it.
Just as books shouldn't be censored, so should the internet stay free.
It strikes me as wrong that the internet could be limited... And it feels like this bill-- if passed-- could lead the way to broader censorship.
So yeah, I signed. Even though I doubt the Senators will actually get it. 🤣
