Hi, I'm a vegan. That means no meat of any kind in any quantity, it means no dairy products, no eggs - basically, nothing that comes from an animal, including wool and silk.

So, why am I vegan? I hate that question with a passion, and I believe the only way I can answer it is, why aren't you?

In 2009 in America alone 59 billion land and sea animals were killed for food. This does not count the billions of animals killed for their fur, for scientific purposes, in animal shelters or simply abandoned.

The average America meat eater was responsible for about 195 deaths in 2009. Over a lifetime this amounts to 15 000 animals per meat eater.

Please take note, this is in one year, in a single country. Also, please understand that due to the severe number of animals killed, guidelines are rarely followed as to the appropriate slaughter of these animals, and even the specified ways of slaughter are still horrifically cruel and often don't work.

Did you know that pigs are as smart as a three year old human and can play video games? You wouldn't eat a three year old human, would you?

Did you know that chickens have shown in a study that they enjoy music and television?

Did you know that cows hold grudges and friendships?

Think about what you are eating.

If you don't believe me, read Skinny Bitch, it is a light, easy read that also has the health benefits of a vegan diet, Forks Over Knives is also very good and has many scientific studies in it. For more of an insight Gary Yourofsky has some great lectures on youtube called the best speech you will ever hear. If you want to see the harsh and horrific truth, then the documentary Earthlings is your best option and easy to find on the internet.

Please consider going vegan, or even just vegetarian as what humans are doing to themselves, animals and the planet is more hideous than any horror film ever made - and it's reality.
Not only is it reality, but this is happening on a scale far greater that we could ever want to consider and could never properly comprehend. If you do watch even just the trailer for Earthlings and have to look away, please consider why you have to look away. If you sit down for dinner and refuse to think about what you are eating, then you know, deep down inside, that what you are doing is fundamentally wrong, and damaging to both you and the environment.

Please, think about what you are eating, what you are wearing, what cosmetics you are putting onto your skin, because I assure you, there is nothing more obscene than beauty built on the dead bodies of thousands of innocent sentient beings. As Leonardo Da Vinci said, "My body will not be a tomb for other creatures.".

Being vegan isn't as hard as you think, I did it over night, from eating meat and enjoying meat as much as the next person. Don't make excuses, don't lie to yourself, and become radically kind.

The point of this post is to get people to consider becoming vegan or lat least think about what it is they're eating. As to the food chain reply if humans were meant to eat meat we would not keep small fluffy animals as pets and we would have canines like vampires. Plants, unlike animals do not have advanced nervous systems and humans can live off plants and we would not destroy the world by doing so, we would also be able to fix many of our world hunger problems.

If this post makes anyone else hungry, then go outside right now, find the nearest animal, chase it down, kill it with your teeth and nails and eat it raw. If you can do that, then you're a true meat eater.

Baby male pigs are castrated with out anaesthetic, and all pigs teeth are also ripped out without anaesthetic. Chickens survive factory farm conditions only by being pumped full of antibiotics and are forced to grow far faster and larger than they otherwise would with hormones. By eating meat and demanding meat, you are taking part in the exploitation, torture and murder of innocent, sentient beings how can that possibly make you hungry. smile

If we didn't breed billions of animals purely for the sake of killing them as soon as they get big enough to eat, we wouldn't need to use a massive amount of resources and land to feed them. These animals ought not to have been bred on such a massive scale in the first place.
There's easily enough non animal derived food products to feed us humans as well as all the animals in the wild.

You say we do worse things to humans, but I don't think you fully understand what we do to animals. Rape, murder, torture, getting skinned alive, as well as being bred, raised and killed in captivity… that's all that these animals experience. Billions upon billions of them.

It would really be better to eat the animals food. Until they are slaughtered they eat a lot of food humans could eat.
So if people would eat less or even no meat, more people on earth could have something to eat.

I somewhat understand your thinking, considering I'm a pescitarian for similar reasons.

Nature is survival of the fittest, humans are stronger than other animals such as pigs, chickens, or cows. Personally, I'm okay with that. This happens in the wild where predators kill and eat their prey, right? But like what you said, the conditions the slaughtered animals were put in that convinces people to become vegan.

However, I disagree with becoming vegan purely for that reason. What about animals that were killed soundly and without any pain? Like in local organic, free range farms? They're not tortured before their death. Killing them is just like a bear killing and eating deer for their food. If the animals we seek to protect do such things to their prey themselves, then why should we restrain ourselves from doing the same thing with our cows, pigs, chickens, etc?

I'm a pescitarian and not a vegan because of the health benefits and am on a diet where animal derived products I use are organic and animal cruelty free. [Like I buy eggs and milks from local farms where I know the owner of the farm and know the conditions the animals are in. I actually know and met the animals they used. :/] I don't see the problem with that. Fish or shrimp cruelty doesn't really happen, and none of the animals used to make the products I use were abused, so it's a win win situation.

I don't get this kind of thinking, humans aren't the same as animals in the wild, we have the ingenuity to get our meat by other means, why are we not supposed to use what is at our disposal just because other predators are incapable of doing the same.

Pika, don't get me wrong, I love meat too, it is delicious.

melon-ramune-freak, good job for trying to keep to the humane choices, but animal products are detrimental to our health, check out Skinny Bitch and Forks over Knives, great vegan books which have a huge amount of information.

Humans don't have to have meat to survive, we don't need it.

It doesn't matter how they are being killed, they are being killed even though it is unnecessary to our survival.
Fish and shrimp are suffocated, that is very cruel.

Sorry Seige, I can't get your your kind of thinking either, just because something is there for the taking doesn't mean it is morally right to take it or do it, especially when it destroys our planet and out own bodies.

I think the biggest problem I see with these discussions is that it always trends to the extreme side of both realms, inevitably toeing the borderline of sarcasm and sheer stupidity.

On that note, I'll applaud melon-ramune-freak for being realistic, and shame myself by posing a tangible, philosophical question to the topic starter.
