Atheism

Poll
What do you think about atheism?
Everyone should be an atheist. Religion is just keeping us down as an intellectual species.
I am an atheist, but not a fanatic. I don't try to persuade other people. I respect religion, and the people that follow it.
I'm not an atheist, but I respect atheism or whatever way of life you may have.
I'm not a fan of atheism. I truly believe there's a higher spiritual being around. Sounds a lot better than the universe coming into existence out of sheer luck.

It's not surprising that every person that proclaims that "the US is the greatest country on the planet" is christian. Not at all. I won't say they all are, but it's not surprising. As for America not being a Christian nation, feel free to argue this when most of the nation leaves.

America is very rich, but the people are not. Most of us can drop to dirt poor in an instance, a lot of us don't realize this, either. There's no security at all.

I kind of disagree with this. We are going bankrupt (I think). All our money will belong to china. Im not trying to say everyone should go around saying the U.S. is the best country in the whole world (even though I live here I totally disagree with that). I dont understand quite why people hate us so much. Other then the iraq war and the afghan war and all those other wars and maybe the fact that we get involved in so many things we should stay out of and- you know I think I'll shut up now

You want to understand?

then begin to read history books... oh right, all the history books make the US to be a victim that stand above the rest... the Heroes of the world... fuck that, your governments (not the people, you are helpless idiots that are too drunk or too fat to know anything) have messed up with the world and have little respect to other countries... so yeah, my country doesn't have Nukes or a strong military, but we are all equal and should be treated with respect, your country is always acting like the saviors of the world, when no one asked them to do that, your country destroys other countries in the name of progress (Panama), you always want to have the best deals, and if the leader of a country disagrees then his plane would suddenly crash (Omar Torrijos, Jaime Roldós), and lets not forget the real reasons you entered World War 1, 2 and Vietnam, but FUCK given the position you are in, most countries would do the same or worse, so don't feel bad about the world hating US, because even if you deserve it, in exchange your country has had better growing conditions that any other in the face of the earth.

So you know what you can do with your "facts"?
You can blow it out your ass.

American government fucks shit up under the guise of a better world. Old news.

Well, yeah. "Majority rules." Obviously. Not something I agree with. Explain what's wrong with my logic.

yeah thats kind of my fault for beginning about american government and christianity, sorry.

Anyway, what I wanna talk about is the protrayal of atheism in popular culture and the media in general.
As I stated on the previous page I find atheism to be very misrepresented in tv shows an movies and such, as well as the american media in particular.
Where I live the media doesn't really make clear vocal opinions about religion or the lack of religion, very neutral and unbiased. As the media should be.
However, I've seen some horrible and at the same time hilarious news items concerning atheism on youtube from American news sources, especially fox news.
If you are in any way intelligent, be it religious or not, I advise you to google atheism fox news and watch some videos. I couldn't stop laughing.

voted the first one since i'm an atheist and i don't respect religious belief.

and i don't think my position to be an arrogant one: you believers do the same as me for every god besides yours.
at least i respect people (even if not the bullshit they may believe), where many believers don't.

I looked through some of the videos, and I wonder why Christians are so threatened by atheists. xD Slap a sign on a bus that doesn't support religion, and they say "why are you trying to ruin our beliefs?" Are they going to say that every time someone doesn't believe what they do?

I'm taking from this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLJ0Vo8pVio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erKq43OWhPg

Christmas does not belong to Christians. I love Christmas mad But there was a time where I boycotted it, and that was when I first started doubting.

Who loves Christmas because they get to sit around and watch those boring plays about how Jesus was born? Christmas is about the lights, the cold, the singing, the food, the presents, and SANTA. It's childish; No reason to religion it up.

How is "why believe in a god? just be good for goodness' sake" threatening? When I have to see signs about Jesus and God that are 10 times more offensive every time I pass a church? Ever single day of the year. We're not half as vocal as Christians.

O^^

And I would like to react to grimslice for his bible quote.
For any theory a scientist can come up with about the nature of the universe or planets, can find a verse in the bible that supports it.
For einsteins idea of the expanding universe you have Job 9:8 where god "expands the heavens" or Isaiah 40:20. "Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in."
But if it was discovered the we live in a closed universe you have Job 9:7 "Who commands the sun not to shine, And sets a seal upon the stars".
But I soon found out when looking for this quote in English that there are several versions of the same qoute, yet slightly rewritten still meaning the same thing but doesn't fit that astronomical idea.

Yes, it's basically the same with Nostradamus prophecies.
You have a fact, you have a cryptic verse, you make it sound like they are connected.

Historically speaking, Christmas is a pagan festivity. It celebrated the winter solstice with the rebirth of the sun and the arrival of the new year. Since it was easy to associate the cult of Jesus with the concept of rebirth Christians decided to make it a Christian holiday for the first time the 25 December 354 AD because for the Romans it was "Dies Natalis Solis Invicti". But now it's a Christian holiday. But probably more a beverage holiday. roll eyes

I have read that it is a "pagan holiday," but I try not to speak past my own intellect dead Thanks for confirming that for me, though. I've spoken to people about it, "did you know it's a pagan holiday?" called me stupid. embarrassed Anyway, if that's a fact, why do so many people not realize where it originated from?

Agnostic.
Everything else is rather ignorant, since it excludes something.
So yes, I believe there is no god (or godlike being) but until I know for sure (which I most likely never will, since I can only see what can be seen by human eyes and grasp what my mind can understand) I can't say that there is nothing like it.
I do think religion is helpful for some people, though (and for getting a huge amount of people acting as a community).
But I prefer thinking on my own and I rather have everyone else do the same. Even if the outcome would be chaos.

According to the Gospels Jesus should have been born in September-October, since shepherds don't bring out their cattle in December. Also when Mary goes to visit Elizabeth, she's six months pregnant, while Mary becomes pregnant in these days. And since John the Baptist was born on March/April Jesus should have been born six months later (September/October). So 25 December is out of question.

none That isn't what I meant. I was just asking why people were not educated about this. I wasn't questioning anything. Sorry if I sounded sarcastic.

wow chaoswind could you insult people who live in america anymore? with what you just said, you called EVERY citizen living in america fat or helpless idiots that are to drunk to know anything. gotta say pretty sad chaos. and where are you from exactly? people are mad at america because they climbed to the top. we joined world war 2 because i don't know Hitler was going to rape the world? should we have waited until he took over everything else then came to us and we would be alone? seems pretty stupid. last i checked. the president decided to go to war. see he can do that even if the people don't want it. can you show em to these history books where america is protrayed as "heroes"? i would like to see them if you could provide them. you really need to check yourself and be less spiteful.

another thing. everyone is not equal. you can cry about it all you want. but the truth of the matter is, we are not born equal. america is not the best nation nor is there one because its subjective.

also america is not a Christian nation. its populated by a lot of Christians but its not a Christian nation. the founding fathers wanted religion to have nothing to do with the government. some of the founding fathers even hated religion. Benjamin franklin, said that lighthouses have more uses than churches. john adams said it would be the best of all possible worlds if religion wasn't in it. Thomas Jefferson thought it was the most perverted system ever shone by man.

is called generalizing, my country is full of baseball obsessed fucktards and idiots that just banned therapeutic abortion, oh and guess what? most of the people living here are Catholics >_<

There is a saying:

Not knowing the rules, doesn't mean that you are innocent of breaking them.
If you know the rules, and you break them, then you are automatically guilty of ignoring them.

>_>
If you don't know something is wrong, and you do it, then you can plead stupidity.

If you know something is wrong, and you don't do anything to fix it, then you are an accomplice.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't get me started on Hitler...

He wanted to take over the world and rule it... big fucking do, so did everyone that was involved in the WWII... the world was a big pie, and everyone wanted to take the biggest piece.

Contrary to popular belief the fucking atomic boom (and the fact that the Russians also got one) was and is the only reason we have peace.

If you exam the history behind the war, and the situation of most countries that participated in it, you would realize that no one was the prince in the white horse... oh yeah, maybe the Atomic weapons, but they where more like the Raging Dragon that would eat you if you where naughty and caused problems.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't get me wrong, the Axis where SICK fucks, but so are everyone and anyone that supports war.

Is funny because most of our technological advances are thanks to War related research...

My point? is stupid of us to kill each other, but killing those that are slightly different from us seems to be Mankind banner of unity... we should begin to explore the universe and colonize the universe and anyone living in it... instead of blowing ourselves, with missiles and nuclear weapons...

No problem I understood that. I was telling you what you can answer them if they tell you are stupid. smile
