The worldwide average death rate is about 1.8 deaths per second, according to WolframAlpha. 100 more deaths a day wouldn't be much more than a drop in the ocean, possibly a minor statistical anomaly. 10k in what, I assume USD? So 1 mil USD a day, or 365 mil a year, I wonder at what point I'd be noticeably affecting the local economy...

This thread just reminded me how shitty people are. Everyone that voted yes here is human trash, seriously.

We live on our desires, simple as that, you are no better, we consume other lifes to live. get offa yer high horse and stop bein a hypocrite. I would push because it would actually not matter, it would maybe weigh on my conscious for a moment if I am fully aware I am dooming someone by doing it, but since I can't imagine the person I killed I probably could not care less after a while.

Wow, even after learning about game theory in economics, I can't believe "yes" is in the majority.
You people... suck.
I'd be a bit less incredulous if the amount was 100k or so, but... it's only 10 grand.

Some demographic data on age/ religion/ job/ income/ education would be helpful.
I wonder if it has to do with greed, desperation, cynicism, or just how despicable and self-centered of a person you are.

You're surprised by this poll? Have you even seen the abortion poll?

Never got around to viewing the results, but I read through some of the arguments.
Abortion's a subject I'm less opinionated about. :/
I have a friend who works closely with people with mental and physical disabilities, and it's touching how much she loves the people she cares after.
And then I have another friend who recently suffered from a miscarriage after deciding to go through with her pregnancy... I don't know how she'll recover.
Before I get off topic, I'll clarify that I was surprised about the degree to which people- the majority of people- are self-interested, to the extent that they're willing to commit murder for easy cash.

I voted no.

Now look at this scenario: Would you shoot a stranger if someone gave you 10k?

To the people who voted yes to this poll, you would say yes to this scenario, because it is the same principle.

No, it is not, you will actually see the stranger when you kill him instead of not seeing makes whole lotta difference, plus with a weapon no less, people can say yes so easily to this is because it is easy, you don't confront the one you are killing and it is not messy.

No. People die all the time but I would never want to be responsible for their death.

in both scenarios, you are making the choice to kill a stranger. it is the same.

people should not differentiate between killing a person by pressing a button versus killing a person by a gun. a life is a life. you should not choose to take a life simply because one method is easier than another method.

I guess nobody watched The Box. I haven't either.
But the catch is something along the lines of once you press the button, you or somebody close to you will be the person that dies if the person after you chooses to press the button.

Yes because I'm giant dick, in either case i wouldn't mind killing this random person with my hands for that money.

Being serious for a minute the question won't be honestly responded, we can't tell for sure how a person will react given the actual situation, maybe someone who said no would crave under pressure or a person that said yes would be taken over by the seriousness of the situation. In either case, even if insignificant, there is also the chance of a person you know dying as they are part of the world.

Also, and just in case, i would make sure of killing every other person who could ever press the button.

The choice is the same, the action and scenarios are not, pushing a button, some random dude dies, you get money. You technically did not do anything to kill the guy but your actions killed him, now the second scenario. You take a gun and kill a guy, receive money, it is an entirely different scenario and is more like assassination, you kill someone, you get cash, however you have to be there and do the dirty work yourself while facing the man you are about to kill. It is not the same, do not be silly, it changes by a whole lot if you are going to kill someone yourself and not let a magical button do it knowing it will kill someone random. It all depends on the situation and how a life is going to be taken that the decision is made if you are going to take a life plus this is all hypothetical, we don't really know if we would really do it in face of a decision such as that, but we can rationalize why we can and I am quite sure I and many would rather pick the button than the gun.

well, my point was: why should you differentiate between shooting someone versus push a button? sure, the methods are different, but the choice - to kill a random person - is the same.

in the poll's original scenario, "push a button and kill a random person to get 10k," i DO know that i would not push that button. i KNOW that i would not push the button because i know where my values lie. i recognize the value of life. i don't have to know the person to know that their life is valuable. people who say that they will push the button basically don't recognize the value of life. it doesn't matter HOW the life is taken. once a life is gone, it's gone forever. why should the method even factor into your decision? because like you agreed with me, you're still making the informed choice to kill a person.
