erm, I don't think this has been posted before, so here goes...

The "Adult" and "Mature" genres have almost the same definition on the BU list.
Can I suggest the following instead;

**Adult **: (As in Adults Only) Contains content only suitable for adults including extreme violence and/or graphic sexual events.

**Mature **: Contains adult themes. May include sex and/or violence. (taking the definition of Mature to mean "fully developed" )

This definition of Mature will also complement the description of Josei as having "more explicit and mature" storytelling.

Smut: Contains explicit sexual fanservice, usually not directly related to plot development. Sex may, or may not be the FOCUS of the manga. Hentai for women 🤣

Thoughts on Mutually Exclusive Genres.
Drama originally meant theatrical and is generally taken to mean the story is emotional rather than strictly realistic. Drama should have a plot and a conclusion.
I feel Drama and Slice of Life are mutually exclusive genres.

Likewise Romance is defined by BU to be between a man and a woman, and so should be mutually exclusive with Shounen Ai / Yaoi genres.
If people agree with this, perhaps a note should be added to the genre definitions for the above.

On a side note, BU may well have the best manga info & ratings database I've ever come across online - thank you for the great work.

Yeah, some genres really need clarifying.
Especially between 'Mature' and 'Adult'.

Also, Shounen ai, basically means Boys' Love, no? So the 'Romance' part is already implemented in the title. When you see 'Shounen-ai' you know that it'll be about two guys that like - or have an indication that they like - eachother.

Sounds good...

I've been thinking some manga could use the "mature" lable as how you've metioned it.

It's true for most cases (I think). But not for all.

Glad you think the same way about "mature". I've been trying to figure out how to pick out series like "Ichigenme" and Miyamoto Kano's "Rules" from say, ... "Skyscrapers of Oz"...

As for the Shounen-ai, here's a classic case - is Antique Bakery shounen-ai, or purely Josei? 🤨

Shoujo-ai/yuri too 😃
Sounds like a good idea! i was never sure about the difference between adult and mature... and romance can be used to label shounen and shoujo manga etc...

Well, Shounen-ai doesn't need to be romantic in the few cases that it isn't. It probably features a male-dominated cast though.

With the neccesary 'hints' around.

Yeah.
And, both will do. 🤣
