its kind of pain me to see how there are lots of new projects ongoing but all the old ones seem to be lagging behind. Its like u will never get to read the stuff u cared since last 2 years and will be forced to pick new series O_o.

You're not alone. Most of the new manga I see coming out aren't interesting enough to keep reading, and the old ones I've read are barely getting scanlated anymore (Except for Vagabond, which has been coming out regularly with new chapters every 3-5 days lately).

Agree. Nowadays new projects flock on the counter day in day out, and i must admit that they are NOT so amusing because i think they are picked without throughfully check "just to show some new manga, whatever the quality". And good mangas thats been stopped being scanlated are forgotten, slowly but surely...

Yet another agreement. There are a whole bunch of manga that have been dropped in the middle (for whatever reason) that I really wish would get finished up. 😔

I do enjoy some of the new stuff too, of course, but I hate having stories dropped partway through.

I have noticed one group in particular that IS picking up partially scanlated series and finishing them off, though. 😀

Maybe it's harder to find raws for some of the older manga?

In topic: well, TofuQueen sure suggested a seemingly true cause to the drop of many semi-old mangas: the lack of RAWs scans. I guess that could be the 50% of the cases ( i cant believe a group stops a manga, a good one, just to "work on something new"). Some other percentage (40%?)goes to "the manga is published we want you to support the artist / we got a C/D letter from their lawyers".

Yeah, I agree. I feel like many groups are picking up more projects than they can handle, either because they start out very enthusiastic about scanlating or because they want to be a "big & popular" group. But they don't have the staff to keep up with all of these projects, and in the end they either take forever to complete or simply never get finished.

Groups should work on just a few projects at a time, instead of a boatload. That they way they can focus on quality and getting releases out on a regular basis. And let's drop the flashy websites and fake-friends clause forums. Keep it low-key and work within your limits. If more groups started doing this, then I think we'd start seeing a lot more series getting finished.

Yeah.
Part of the problem with old manga is the lack of availability of raws, even if you buy them, it's hard to find it online and in stock.
Though scan groups really have on idea if a manga is of good quality or not if they can't read it...(Except for the translators of course.)

A lack of raws makes sense. But I've been seeing a bunch of groups pop up that are dedicated to picking up "lost/forgotten" projects. Except they have to be really careful because sometimes the old groups yell at them for stealing their series 😐
Another kind of solution: Read really popular manga. Then, they have bunches of scanlation groups and come out right away! 😀

It pains me when I have to stopping reading a manga because the updates stopped for whatever reason and no one else continuedl. I have so many on my hold and wish lists that are just waiting for someone to pick up and I can't get hold of in English. Makes me wish I could read Japanese really.

What bugs me is when manga like naruto and bleach and one piece have several releases by different groups. All this manga that is going unnoticed and yet some manga get dozens of releases of each chapter. I don't mind low quality first then releasing a high quality but are that many really neccessary? It seems a shame that more time isn't devoted to lesser known series and I'm seriously considering learning japanese after I graduate just so I can do something about it. Though I suppose a lack of raws does limit what scanlation groups can do.

The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.

Lately i'm finding myself in quite a dillemma... Once i start reading a new series... the group scanlating it stops O_o ... hope those guys doing beelzebub dont stop... the ones doing black god stoped since a LONG while ago. 😀 if i start naming all those " on hold" mangas i'd write for at least 2 hours 😀

And I too am annoyed at the trends of super popular series being scanlated by 5 or 6 groups, while many very enjoyable series find themselves indefinitely on hold. Many series lose a lot of possible readers just due to the infrequent scan rates. And I'm certainly bewildered by the tendency of groups to "claim" certain projects, then never scan it again, and get mad when another group comes anywhere near it.

Indeed.

I'm grateful to scanlators for what they do, but I am annoyed when older projects are put on hold for new ones, or dropped altogether. How about finishing up that manga you half-scanlated before going after something new?
I hate groups claiming projects. The whole idea seems stupid. Who cares if two groups are doing the same series, and why does it matter?
