So what's your view on tons of groups doing the same series? (typically with the shounen series...)

Competition brings the best out of everyone.

Collaborative efforts are beneficial... but having 100 people doing the same thing is just gonna be a mess.
Especially if its non-profit.

I think they should go work on other stuff...

They usually go for speed over quality.
Then they release more versions...
Quite pointless I think.

And while they do that, there are many titles that are just pushed aside since they're less popular.
Other manga just wait unscanlated... Why not work on those?

I chose Competition is Always a Good Thing... 😛

I mean, I hate to use this an example, but it was obvious that was the main force driving groups like The Little Corner and the 1/2 Prince releases... -_-;;

I think it's good for different standards, but I guess it's somehow a complex matter.

Waste of time, really.
You might argue the difference of qualities.
But, just look at Naruto.
It's too much.

Oh, and this.

I think it's good for different standards. As long as no more than two or three groups are doing them and it's a popular manga. Any more than that, it's ridiculous and a waste of effort.

there are so many other series that are waiting to be scanlated.why not work on those instead of fuzzing over one?

but a little competition ain't that bad 😛
and i'm emphasizing 'a little'

I voted that i don't care, as long as i get to read i'm cool.

Anyway, there is so much manga out there not being scanlated that are good, it makes me really sad. There is like 20 groups doing Naruto alone, why the hell do we need so many? Groups who are doing the same series should just take up other projects that are not getting any love, the community would be better for it. 😀

Here are opinions of some scanlators/translators:

  1. Question 6 from http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/129
  2. Question 6 from http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/134
  3. Question 6 from http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/139
  4. Question 6 from http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/142
  5. Question 6 from http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/148
  6. Question 8 from http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/152
  7. Question 7 from http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/158
    though not entirely related
  8. Question 6 from http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/170

(Seems like a regular question in MH interviews)

Most of scanlators seem to support the idea of joining efforts.

Working together is nice, but as Caliber said, its not gonna work with alot of people on the same thing.

So instead of working on the same project, why not just branch out?

Working together is good as long they dont repeat scantalations that have already been done. I think it just waste their efforts to do so.

Waste of resources.
It's not like scanlations have
any novelty value. Scanlate
stuff that hasn't been scanlated or
join forces to get the shit done faster.
Nobody rememebers who scanlated
chapter 47.

I'd rather see that one group is good...as for me I don't really care that much about the quality, as long as I can get the story in my head it doesn't matter, and there's so many good manga out there having no scans, kinda surprises me when you see 20 groups doing the same manga, like, what's the point?

You... <_< Since i bought those raws and was involved in every release... ;O I'd have to say i know a bit more about what was going on with those two groups. We released it fast out of annoyance(from various sources) and to get rid of the raws. Also, those raws weren't bought till around mid January, so it's not as if we were delaying the series on purpose ;(

Competition, really? Multiple groups doing the same project is just plain retarded. Spending time on a release just for someone else to spam one isn't good for anyone involved. Competition is good for the economy, but for scanlators who spend valuable time for greedy people who need their "fix"... gtfo~ We don't get paid, practically no love and at most a "Good job, keep up the good work"; which by the way, is amazingly annoying.

I don't think any respectable group or scanlator supports multiple same chapter releases. On that same token, no respectable group or scanlator will do that on their own after someone has started it.

This is all volunteer work for fans by fans. If the people involved actually cared they'd help each other out to speed up releases.

Remind me to smack the person who linked this post. Can't stop the urge to respond to these things and have other things to do... like preparing my mass release <_<;

Final Rant/My pick:
Combine efforts if there are a lot of chapters left and the group is going slow. Usually there is a reason for it, though it seems new "groups" and leechers don't care.
