I don't read it because it's ''forbidden.'' I read it because I like boys 😐 A lot. And that's the only explanation I have, there's no deep underlying cause as to why I like seeing boys in relationships together o.o

There's been lots of deep thought done on the subject of why (some) girls like yaoi. It's got to have something to do with the fact that (most) guys love girl-on-girl, they say. Perhaps it's a way girls can explore sex and relationships without involving their own body. Perhaps girls relate too much to pornography involving the female body and thus feel uncomfortable with it. And there's of course the forbidden-love dynamic. There was a paper I read that I'll link to once I find it that compared the slash and yaoi phenomenons. The author noted that slash appears to be more popular in less-liberal areas where a gay couple still has a kind of mystique to it. Japan is not a very liberal country, especially in public, and so most of the girls in that entire nation see gay couples as having that forbidden mystique. That's how he explained why yaoi is so incredibly popular with girls there compared to the rest of the world.
I personally was first drawn to m/m because I liked the lack of a difference in power. In het the girl is always the weaker one, the submissive one, who blushes and swoons as the guy cooly romances. I liked the lack of weakness in a pair between two guys. I liked seeing two sets of typical guy traits clash against each other with nothing to even them out. Plus, the kisses are hotter since there's no worrying about breaking a girly neck. Of course, with the whole uke/seme thing, all that totally doesn't happen. Now I've decided I just like seeing guys dom'd.

well i like all types but the first yaoi I read had beautiful art and a wonderful, almost poetic storyline. Personally it's better story and art wise than any other kind of manga I think (at least some yaoi are) ^_^

I posted this before in a random thread, but this seems to be the right place for it.

Maybe this was already asked but I'm too lazy to read the whole thread...so...Why do girls like Yaoi? They seem to be crazy about it.
Is BL that exciting from a girl's perspective? Can't say why all girls like it. I'll tell you why I like it, though.
Two guys in a yaoi manga seem equal in their relationship in a way that is pretty rare in most romance mangas about guy-girl couples. Also, they're not as bound to gender role stereotypes, so you'll see a range of characters with personalities that are not onesidedly masculine or feminine. (Granted, there's a whole category of yaoi mangas that replicate all the alpha-male/damsel-in-distress cliches of shoujo, but I'm not into those.) I also like yuri for this reason, but as a straight girl, it's easier to empathize with characters who are attracted to men. Also, in real life women already do a lot of things that men do, so I feel more appreciation for male characters who break with tradition and embrace their feminine side. I find this sexy in real life, too.
In many yaoi mangas, romance develops between people who were friends or acquaintances for a long time. They know each other's faults and weaknesses, but still like each other for who they really are. Also, as friends, they seem to like each other as people first and foremost, so their love seems more geniune. (This is probably one of the reasons fangirls like to "slash" shounen manga characters. You can't deny that there are a lot of deep emotional bonds between the main characters of most shounen mangas.)
A good number of yaoi mangas are about college students or adults, which is more interesting to me than the usual high school romance. I haven't found many of these outside yaoi. Not enough josei/seinen romances seem to be translated.
I think the forbidden aspect could be relevant. You know, "their love is so deep because they can't stop loving each other even though it's so hard for them," etc. But I tend to prefer yaoi about men who know they like men from the beginning, rather the ones about men agonizing over their identities. And in many yaoi mangas (far too many than I'd like), every character seems to be gay, so there is little sense of reality or social norms.

A lot of people on here like yuri. If you don't mind yuri, why do you mind yaoi? It's not like you have to read it even if you don't like. Also I don't see which one is more forbidden than the other.
A lot of "yuri action" is mixed in hentai/ecchi. Even if one doesn't read anything labeled shoujo-ai/yuri, he/she will somehow encounter girl on girl at some point. It's done this way because it is supposed to suit guys' taste more, just like a lot of yaoi being done to suit women's tastes. Yuri is not that uncommon as you think. It's just done differently and not done in a "romance story" way sometimes.

I primarily read yaoi/shounen ai because I can relate to it (I can more so relate to shounen ai...yaoi is typically very unrealistic). I also read yuri/shoujo ai (non-explicit though)...
Yes, I am a guy, and yes I am gay...

Yaoi is just another kind of romance to me. If the story is good, regardless of the genre I'll read it.
I know where people who don't want to read yaoi are coming from though, I'm a straight guy, and when I didn't read yaoi it gave off an "icky" feeling(No offense). I started reading it in a sort of round-a-bout way. I read a shoujo with a shounen-ai subplot/sidestory and it wasn't unbearable. After a while I ran out of manga to read and decided to give a shounen-ai a go, and then after a while I tried a yaoi or two and found that the gay sex parts I could just skip over if I wanted to. Eventually I just got used to it so I don't need to anymore 🤣
But really, I think people read it because of the same reasons they read other genres. The story and the character interactions.

No, I think most yaoi manga have bad art. 😐 As to story, it depends on the specific title. A lot I just can't stand. Some are OK.
And "love" is often overstated and overrated in female oriented manga. 😮 But this topic isn't about that so I just stop here. I personally can't stand manga about "expressing love" or such.
Bottom line: read whatever you like to read. Yaoi, yuri are just genres and I treat them no differently from any other genre. Filter it out when searching for manga genres.

Forbidden? I don't care about that. 🙂 Well, I used to but that matters little anymore.
I just like reading about relations, romances and sometimes sex between 2 humans. Something that transcends gender boundaries and other stuff like society's norms, perceptions and blah blah blah.
In the end, I just read something if I want to. 🙂

If that was the problem (too H), then go for some of the shounen-ai recommendation threads instead of yaoi. You'll get the art and the romance without getting the H. We (the fujoshi regulars on MU) have given many shounen-ai and softcore yaoi suggestions to people who didn't want to see anything too H. =)
If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.
From a bumper sticker I like:
"If you're gonna ride my ass, at least pull my hair."
I find the Yaoi genre to have a large variety of possibilities concerning situations, setting, character personality, plots and other things that are hard to find in shoujo manga. Besides the forbidden atmosphere 🤣 , you will always be surprised when you find those different plots, from demons to ganster to angels. You just named it. If you're looking for something specific, you can always find it. Yaoi mangas have a large number of possibilities, and that's what i like the most.
and it's pretty darn easy to find=D 🤣 🤣

i remember reading from my psychology book that while men are stimulated in physical realtionship, woman are stimulated by emotional relationship.
in another word, if men are shown close-up picture of unknown person's private for example, they will show response. however, the woman won't. they usually feel disgusted. (well, this is for most people)
on the other hand, if woman read the writen novel about someone's romantic ventures, she feels response, but the men don't.
woman's stimulus has to do with emtion, not physical. in another word, homo relationship are equally as stimulating as hetro relationship. (when it comes to literature, that is) so it's not weird that woman likes yaoi.
