On August 22, Chinese broadcaster CCTV released “Soul’s Window”, a much-trumpeted “original production” aimed at a child audience. But Web users haven’t fallen for it.

Same set, same features, same hairstyles – manga fans were not fooled. Several scenes from the 52-episode cartoon were copied directly from "Byousoku" (Five Centimetres per Second), a popular Japanese animated film by Makoto Shinkai released in 2007.

CCTV, China’ state-owned television network, says it was not aware that the production violated copyright. China’s propaganda department, which co-produced the cartoon, had billed it as an educational programme. “Soul’s Window” was supposed to teach children a lesson in ethics.

Replying to the accusations, the cartoon’s producer, Lanhai, recognised that roughly 1 percent of the 2,500 scenes mirrored parts of “Byousoku” and offered an apology. The company said it would launch an inquiry in order to “identify those responsible and draw lessons from this case".

Yeah, I have heard of the news. I'm used to China doing
stuff like this, so it doesn't surprise me in the least.

I was quite shocked too. I mean, CCTV is a state media entity but still copied exact same things done by others. What were they thinking?

It's China, I'm surprised it didn't happened a long time ago.

My guess is that some people who worked for the programme copied the anime. The authorities knew nothing about the anime and then approved its airing, because the anime was probably never legally shown in China.

A recent comment by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao decrying the lack of Chinese anime has incited a flurry of online support, with Chinese net users vigorously denouncing Japanese anime.

“There are times when I watch TV anime with my grandchild, but they’re always foreign works like Ultraman and so on, and few are domestically produced. We should be cultivating a domestic anime industry.”

Quote from Sankaku Complex

China’s top state run broadcaster is being accused of plagiarising elements of Pokémon and Naruto in its latest children’s anime, not long after it was discovered to have shamelessly copied 5cm Per Second wholesale; the broadcaster obstinately denies the charges, saying there is a difference between “plagiarism” and “imitation.

In hindsight this was inevitable. Overworked animators, high demand for animation and protectionism blocking foreign animation is a recipe for mass produced garbage. Of course tying their animators hands by limiting animation to state approved educational content doesn't help either.

Did the Premier really say "Chinese anime" or was that just a bad translation designed to provoke anime fans? As for online support against Japanese anime, they are the usual government shills. The leaders talk, the shills wave their flags and rest download the latest episode of Naruto. 🤣

I personally do no think that it’s a plagiarism as it is
looks more like adaptation for the Chinese viewers

There was couple decent Chinese animation ( I could not call them anime with all due respect ) in the recent years but seems like they struggling to find their own identity and could only rip of japan projects.
Only the time will tell

All that's needed for a valid court case in regards to declaring plagiarism is a name and an appearance. China is infamously known to blatantly steal anything and everything from outside cultures. And, people have documented China's blatant theft in everything ranging from Gundam to Resident evil. However, no one can take it to court as China's copyright laws do not apply to Non-Chinese citizens/businesses.
