Does anyone know of a good place to learn Japanese online? Like maybe a correspondence course or just online recorded lessons with PDF files or podcasts or MP3 examples? Not advanced Japanese, just really basic Japanese, simple bread-and-butter stuff.

The reason I'm asking is I don't have the time or the money to do expensive and time-consuming university/community courses. I want something I can do in my own time and for a minimal cost - or even free! I decided to ask for recommendations because there's like a million search results for this on Google, and there's no way of comparing their quality or knowing whether any of those places are any good. Hopefully someone here has positive experiences with a particular provider (free or paid) that they can share.

OR if you can recommend a really good book/CD combo to learn Japanese, then I guess that's okay too, it doesn't have to be online. Just something cheap and casual that I can do at my own pace. Lol that sounds kinda dirty... 🤨

Do any of you have any recommendations? Thanks! 🙂

hi~
I highly recommend TheJapanesePage

They have audio podcasts, lessons, forums, etc.
They teach the basics, to the more advanced, and even for the "just for fun" and randoms. And they're free~

I used that site a few years back. It was VERY helpful then. It should cover what you need!

I also recommend Teach Yourself Japanese. But it's just a bunch of reading and etc. But it did the job!

Finally, once you've gotten the hang of things and need a good ol' japanese dictionary, Denshi Jisho & Saiga should help.

And just for fun, if you ever want to know japanese slangs, here you go!

I recommend Genki I+II - Integrated Elementary Japanese Course. I think the books are more helpful, and as for audio, I recommend Absolute Pimsleur's Japanese. For video there's Japanese Basic. It's 30 minutes per episode, and you can even find it on Youtube<

You'll also find this site EXTREMELY helpful

http://nihongo-dekimasu.blogspot.com/ <--- Somebody who uploads free ebooks (including Genki and the like :'D)

I personally started with this site, when I got interested. I don't know how well it would help compare to other sites/books, but I remember not feeling overwhelmed.

Something that you might be interested in, as well.

Thank you SO MUCH people, I really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart! Now I know what to do with my time over the Christmas holidays; I want to get started on one of your suggestions! Will definitely look at them. Thanks. 😃

Like a few others, I'd recommend the Genki books. Using it myself right now, as well. Another book I've heard being called the best, aside from Genki, is Minna no Nihongo. Haven't looked at it myself so I can't really comment on it further than that.

I supplement my learning with a site called smart.fm. Should be especially of use to you, since you're interested in the basics of the basics. You ought to find a list there that has just the basic vocabulary you're interested in.

One more site I'm just throwing here because no one else has. 😉 AJATT (All Japanese All The Time)
