Hi everybody. Just wanted to give a quick public service announcement. NEVER EVER EVER DRIVE AFTER DRINKING

I got a DUI 2 years ago and it was a terrible and expensive experience. I had many days of community service as well as payed thousands of dollars in fines and penalties. I was ordered to go to AA meetings and take substance abuse classes (class was $1500) It is a black mark on my record for the next 10 years.

And it gets worse.

I got into a car accident 6 months ago with some gangsters near my house very early in the morning. They produced a weapon and threatened my life and I ended up having to run from the scene on foot for fear of being shot. Today I had to go to court to find out that I am being charged with a hit and run as well as a second DUI. I was not drinking when I got in the accident, but the courts assumed that that is why I left the scene, and now I have to defend myself. I do not and have not had a drink for the past 2 years, but because I have a record, I am presumed guilty and will end up paying huge amounts again for something that was not my fault.

So I say again.....
Do yourself a favor and NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DRINK AND DRIVE

wow... these are quite a few consequences 🙁
i don't have driver's license and i'm a little afraid to do get one because there are many people who don't drive safely and there are so many accidents in which innocent people die and not the one at fault. and of course there are some that are drunk while driving. oh, man... it's really a shitty world out there.

i hope that everything turns out good for you vinceasuma

it... should be obvious, right? :/ but yeah.

sorry about your situation. i'm sure that it'll work out because legally, you had a reason to run away. get a good lawyer. that may end up costing less than paying for the 2nd dui

I'm sorry for you.
But it s good that you came here and said it.
Most people think that the worst tha can happen after drinking and driving is just having an accident (witch is pretty bad by itself). But, like you showed, it goes behond that.

It should be obvious, but for some reason it isn't. It is very easy to get a DUI. If you had seen how many people were in Jail with me for DUI you would be amazed. That day I was in a cell with 30 other people who had also gotten a DUI within the last 4 hours. When I went to court a month later, there were over 100 people, all waiting to be sentenced for DUI that day. (they have DUI court 5 days a week). That is a lot of people (including myself) that missed the obvious fact.

FYI, here are some easy ways to end up with a DUI:

Drive to work the morning after having a few beersthe night before (Hangover is a DUI)
Driving while on cold medication (cold and allergy meds are drugs).
Have as little as .01 Blood Alcohol level if you are a minor
Riding a bicycle or skateboard after drinking.
Sometimes being intoxicated in a car whose driver is drunk can get a DUI for everybody.
Having a beer while tuning-up the car
Being in possession of your own car keys while being drunk

I second this. But also, ask bartenders to take your keys away when you have had too much.

My personaly enemy is chocolate and vodka espressos... I can't get enough of them. And before you call the drink bad, try one.

I don't know about good luck. Maybe he should be suspended instead for being such a bad driver and a potential threat to everyone on the street.....I mean, isn't never drink and drive the whole meaning of this topic? Obviously he's trying to teach us about his wrongs.

whoa... pretty harsh... but here i guess its almost the same.. in the past few years the car accident were increasing so the goverment and some other organizations went on compaigns.... i set through hmmm.. like.... 20 classes about the issue, bcuz its mostly teenagers... in israel you get lisence at age 17, bcuz of various reasons (its expensive for the army to train drivers, so the kids r simply getting lisence before they r 18), and some of my mates r really into drinking, smoking, and clubbing. i dont investigate on they drunkndrive issues, but i can imagine them them drunk after getting out of a club, and think "uh.. i can drive!".

I think age to get a license in the US is dependant on the state. In VA its 16 (is it still?). Beack when I was getting my license, I was told in LA the age was 14 ... is that true?? Of course this was over a decade ago ...

But VinceAsuma ... don't you get a lawyer assigned by the court if you can't afford one? Do they not have any witness or gang people's testimony? Logistics of the crash? A criminal record against the people accusing you of hit and run? They sound much more dangerous than you, since you were about to be assaulted. Or is it ending up to be your word against theirs?

For most states in the US, the minimum driving age is 16

in israel, 16 is for motobikes..
and about the gangsters issue, i dont think criminal records have something to do with being victim for car accidents. besides. i live in a very-very bad part of tel-aviv, and everyone can get away with everything if they want to.

I have a lawyer that I pay a lot of money to. Unfortunately, what I have been arrested for is Hit-and-Run and Probation violation. Both are charges that are not decided by fault of the accident. The story about the weapon is my word against theirs. Me = Guy who fled the scene and has a record of DUI from 2 years ago. Them = two guys who got in an accident and stayed at the scene. They aren't about to tell anyone that they pulled a gun on me.

I am pretty much screwed on this because of my record, and that is the point of this thread:
Don't drink and drive! You will be screwed for years after! Totally not worth it

BTW Ares, I was arrested, that's why I am going to court and paying penalties. And my license was suspended too.

Interestingly enough, I known someone who could only drive ' while ' drunk and had been for 40 years. But then I also know people who chain smoke and lived a health life to age 99. This really disturbs me.
