When I was younger it used to really bother me if they were called cartoons, but now that I've gotten older and learned that really it doesn't matter (and when to pick your battles in life) I don't care if people call them cartoons or not. I really only clarify if a person asks what anime is.

What's the difference? I don't see it. All I see is a translation and niche words.

manga (jp), manwha (kr), manhua (ch) are all translated into english as cartoon. And it is a correct term.

If you wish to separate "anime" in anyway, it's no different than translating to animation. But, none the less, the word cartoon scopes animated cartoons as well.
Etymology of the word would say the same thing as well.

if you really want to point out the japanese part by saying "anime", you could say japanese cartoon.

If you take an animated manwha and argued it's anime and NOT a cartoon, That would be an offensive statement as your making something that's korean into japanese. If you say it's both anime and cartoon, it's just a translation or niche term.

But they are cartoons.

I don't hear that often and less often I talk about anime to unenlightened in this area people. I can't imagine a modern person being so deep in the tank not to be aware of anime existence.
And the only thing is it's just more suitable to use a proper term.

Well, I'm not sure how correct it is to call anime a cartoon, but even though it bothers me a bit, I do that myself.

Let's see you trying to explain "anima" and "mango" to people.

Because really, (and maybe it's just me), but going out of breath by attempting to make the other person understand only to get frustrated when they go all "Ah-huh... sure.... nvm..."

Same reason why I refer to manga as "you know, those Japanese comix..." ._.

Add, "It used to but not anymore," maybe? Cause that's what it is for me atleast. I didn't really like that classification.. Especially with the crap that's on nowadays.. But nowadays it's just easier if I start the explaination off with, "Japanese Cartoons," and then go into a tiny bit more detail.

Even folks around here know what anime is and differentiate it from a cartoon made by, say, Disney/or whomever/. So, I don't hear that very often.
If I hear/see it somewhere it might bother me a bit, but I just ignore it.

Not really. And here, where I live, they refer to any cartoon as anime. 🤣 So it's the opposite for me.

Yes, it does bother me. My parents often called them "Chinese Cartoons", but I told them that they're Japanese cartoons, not Chinese.... 🙄

Doesn't bother me - I some times refer to it as cartoons. Anime is animation. You can call it animation, anime, cartoons don't matter.

Yeah it annoys me.

I mean, techically yes, they're animated, but when I think of cartoons, I think of things like Spongebob, or Dexter, those type of cartoons.
You can't really put anime in the same category as those cartoons 🤣

I only get bothered when the same friends of mine refer to it as cartoons everytime, even though I've explained the difference to them XD
