What do you usually call your manga series? And do you get mad when people call it the "wrong" thing?

i consider graphic novels the same as comics but i dont consider Manga the same as 'graphic novels.' i consider comics/graphic novels things like marvel superhero comics and stuff like spiderman <3 marry jane. that's entirely different form manga.

It's not that widely popular around here and the people that usually buy manga just call it manga. I don't care how people call it anyways, as long as I know it's manga for me 🤣

I remember when Fukuda resigned, the BBC's article mentioned Asō Tarō's fondness for "Japanese manga cartoons". They just about set the standard there, I'd say.

I call them comic's to those that don't know the name Manga.

Its easier than explaining, and keeps things simple.

But yes, it irks me to death when people call them comics.
Because I associate "comic" with American Comics.

Though it does make sense to call them comics, since manga is the japanese equivalent, and I speak English, but whatever. When I think about it, I'm no better than people that use "kawaii."

Eh, manga ARE comics, just from Japan. Same argument from me, if movie I like is made in Finland, I'm still just going to call it a movie, not an elokuvassa just because it's made in another country. If we called everything by the name of the country it came from, I bet half of your household items would be in Chinese.

I get that it's handy to call it manga, it's the specific TYPE of comic you read, but it's a comic.

And no, I don't get mad at people calling it the "other" thing cos' I know they're not familiar with it. But if someone who reads manga calls it something else...that's a different story. 🤣

I totally agree with you. Yes the word 'comic' is usually associated with American graphic novels but that doesn't mean that mangas aren't the same thing.

I have some graphic novels that I got from other countries that I also call comics. What I call them depends what country I'm in. 🤣

...I have a hard time objecting to calling manga "comics" when bookstores in Japan label the manga shelves with コミックス, which is, for those of you who can't read it, "comics." No, really, the English word (adapted to Japanese pronunciation, of course).

Here's how I view it - while manga are comics, comics are not necessarily manga. I call manga "manga" because most of the time people think of "comics" as American superhero comics and such, and manga are the only comics I read. It's handy to clarify what you're talking about, since manga are, obviously, different from other types of works that fall under the greater "comics" umbrella. But saying that manga simply are not comics? I don't get that. -.0

Korean graphic noble is manhwa
Chinese graphic noble is manhua

but then again there are something that are just not in either or one of the categories.

like "Avatar: the last air bender" which is an amine series created in America but has a completely manga-style drawing and culture

I understand where your reasoning comes from
and I'm a Korean not Japaneses so I don't have the full right to say this (but I'm sure the situation is pretty much the same)

The fact of the matter is that in japan or korea, using english is considered "cool" social norm. It's common to use english words in korean or japanses in the form of their language
if you listen to korean or japanses songs, there's a lot of english in there, it's kinda like a trend.

like this one time i was reading black butler in korean, they use the words such as "family" which is perfectly translatable in korean, in it's english form (written in korean)

So i think it's a big assumption to think that Japaneses think comic = manga, it's a culture thing. It's more "cool" for them to call manga as comic

huh.most people here are not all that familiar with non-American, non-Japanese comics, I guess.

For me, it's absolutely logical to call manga comics, since that is what it is ("...the arrangement of pictures or images and words to narrate a story or dramatize an idea." to quote Eisner). The manga has some specific narrative techniques, but so does, say, French comics.

And manga is not that different in it's exploration of adult (or more adult themes) from European and American alternative comics.

I would say that the only thing in which manga IS considerably different is the abundance of comics for girls and women (which is one of the things that gave manga it's face).
