I hope it's not a repeat... I searched the forums but it's easy to overlook a similar topic...

As the title says, this topic is about film music. I think it's okay to talk about anime too, but there's also a separate topic for this.

So - when you watch a movie, do you pay attention to the music playing in the background? Do you have any favourite themes or composers? Are there any movies which, in your opinion, would be completely different if the music was different? (sorry, I ran out of synonyms) Or movies that good only because of its music?

My favourite is the score from Merlin by Trevor Jones. I tried to write more, but it's difficult to describe music with words, especially in a foreign language 🙂 So you can just listen to it.The movie is about magic and fighting and love and somehow it's all in the music 🙂

Another composer I like is Joe Hisaishi. Whenever I hear a song written by him, I think about Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away", although I've seen many movies with his music. What I like about his songs is the feeling of "calm optimism" in most of them (sorry, I couldn't find a better word). Like in this song from the movie Kikujiro (directed by Takeshi Kitano).

So, how about you?

Excalibur.
This was the first movie that get me hyped. When Arthur revived and gets his sword back, than rites in the battle with his knights. They play Orff's Carmina Burana. I was 9 or 10 years old and totaly captivated by the scene.
In movies or animes the theme songs are important. I really like the anime ost-s. Yuki Kajuira (Noir, Madlax), Holy Raz (Macros Zero : Horobi no uta is really god with the dog fight scene). If i can i get my hands on the soundtracks that i like and hear them over and over.

And what about the movie trailers? The music under them is, sometimes better then the original soundtracks in the movie. Terminator 4, Ultraviolet

You're not usually really supposed to notice the music. It's there to create the mood (with few exceptions).

Hisaishi's music is always great. I got lots of movie music somewhere, but can't be bothered to look for it, but some good soundtracks of movies I re-watched recently are: Natural City, Dead Man, about all the old—I don't even watch the new ones anymore—Disney movies (though I only re-watched one).

Anything by Takemitsu Touru, Satou Masaru, Ifukube Akira, Jingi no Hakaba's music and others by that composer (who was it again?), Manabe Riichirou, Hayashi Hikaru... Bleh, okay there are quite a few, I'll just go back to sleep.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast had a great film soundtrack. I thought that the opening narration was effective in bringing forth the Beast's "dark" past (I was actually really frightened when I first watched it as a child, but now I grew to appreciate the opening more and more). And of course, being a lover of musicals, I'd sing along with the songs. But the instrumental scores were nice as well.

Same can be said of Disney's The Lion King -- the mood and pace of the movie was greatly enhanced by the soundtrack.

I agree with @Pikapu for Amelie -- the piano and accordion!! I love it!

OooOooooh! I also liked the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice! Had that soundtrack on repeat for a good month or so at one point.

Too many films to list... so I'll just say that I like film scores composed by John Williams and Danny Elfman... I'm sure there are more...

Great topic! Will add when I watch movies.

Pirates of the Caribbean
Star Wars
Psycho
Spirited Away
The Matrix
Pride and Prejudice
Amadeus
Sleeping Beauty (Disney used music from the classic ballet, which is one of my favourites)

I can go search for soundtrack in the middle of a film(

Yes, Neil Young's Dead Man ost is pure bliss.
I can also point out Mike Patton's Crank 2 ost and Vincent Gallo film's soundtracks.

I almost always pay attention to the soundtrack in films. It always adds an extra level of depth and texture for me. I've always been a horror movie fanatic, so I adored the works by Goblin, the Italian prog rock band, for their contributions they've done for the Italian horror scene of the 1970's. Great Stuff.

Yeah, I like some of the stuff that Kenji Kawai and Joe Hisaishi have done in the past, but I'm more of an underground rock guy, so those kinds of soundtracks mean more to me than the mainstream stuff tbh.
