Would you be able to give up anime/manga for Lent (assuming you would celebrate it, even if you don't)? And if you don't know what Lent is, please Google it.

Question: Would you give up anime/manga for Lent?
Choices:
Sure - votes: 947 (6.2%)
No way! - votes: 2429 (16%)
I could give that up, but I don't celebrate Lent - votes: 2514 (16.6%)
I could never do it. Besides, no Lent for me - votes: 2289 (15.1%)
What's Lent? - votes: 6991 (46.1%)
There were 15170 total votes.
The poll ended: March 26th 2011

Don't ever see myself giving up anything for faith considering how little faith gives back.

And if the poll really wants people to look up the meaning and assume we celebrate it, options 3-5 seems rather counter-productive...

Anime/Manga > lent bigrazz

Living in Slovenia i keep on thinking of festival Lent while reading this poll xD
Never knew this is called lent in English.

I think i could give up, if i'd actually decided to do so, but i'm usually not giving must of attention to lent and i usually don't make any extra promises for the lent time...but if i do i prefer say no alcohol for 40 days bigrazz (ups... i guess i already failed that this year xD)

Never! dead Forty days is too long. I'd have a hard time giving anything up for that long, but some things I could if I had to. Manga I couldn't. For a week, maybe, if I had a really compelling reason.

Erm, well I usually fast in the last week of Lent, so er, giving up trivial things such and chocolate and anime/manga etc. I don't do. That's not the point of Lent (for me anyway).

So my "No Way!" choice wasn't because I would never give up anime/manga, it's because I fast and become vegan for a week instead.

When I voted I didn't know what Lent was, so the answer is "What's Lent?"

But after some googling......I probably would.

You usually give up bad things for Lent!
Manga isn't a bad thing.
Therefore, no way. (:

@Starrie
I thought you had to give up on things you enjoy (a single certain thing, at least).
Things you crave, like a certain food, or a form of entertainment.
I don't think those are considered bad things in themselves, it's sinful to indulge too much. Or something like that.

Anywho, I myself wouldn't give up on anything for religious reasons,
but I have no problem otherwise.
Being in a scanlation group though, I feel like I'm keeping people wait, and I really don't like that.

Edit:
Whoops, mixed up terms. bigrazz

This!!

I think I could probably do it if I wanted to - I went without the internet and manga for a month once (albeit because I was in Africa and didn't have access to either) and didn't find it tough - but I don't think manga is really a bad thing, more of a good one. It can be quite enriching. Like reading a novel. You don't hear about people giving up books for Lent.

If I had to give something up, I'd probably give up chocolate or some other bad food. That would be quite tough.

Now I'm confused confused

In Lent you are supposed to give up things you like but are bad for you or things you like and are good for you or being good for you or not isn't the point, the intention is to deprive yourself from something you like to mourn Jesus death?

If it's the first one...I wouldn't give them up,
1- I don't think they are bad to me in any way.
2- Even if they were bad I think there is nothing to gain by giving them up. I would be back reading when the time expired.

For the second one I would give them up.

For the third one I wouldn't because I'm a spiritist, so I don't think Jesus death is something to mourn over.

This is Catholicism, not Christianity.

Edit: I noticed that Spiritualist sounded strange(google translator) So digged a little and found that Spiritist more adequate

I'm Catholic, so I participate in Lent every year. This year, I gave up TV, anime, and manga. I'm busy with school anyway, so it doesn't take away much.

This is Catholicism, not Christianity.

It's to reflect on Jesus fasting in the desert for 40 days. So for Lent you're just building your personal discipline and remembering the actions of Jesus.

Most people choose to give something up that's bad for them that they enjoy, because they see it as a way to improve themselves physically, as well. However, you only need to give up something you enjoy, because you're simply doing a "mini-fast", and the self-discipline is more important from the religious perspective than the personal improvement.

And no, I wouldn't give up manga for lent. Although I like it, such a fast would probably cause me to do a manga binge at the end during which I'd try to catch up on everything I'd missed, and I'm not sure that is really self-discipline so much as patience, since I'm still doing the same thing for the same amount of time, just at a later date.

As a Catholic who's done this for a couple decades I can say the things you give up for Lent are supposed to have meaning behind them, and not whether they're good or bad for you. I'm a social drinker who doesn't smoke or do recreational drug so there'd be no meaning in giving those up, not a big fan of chocolate, not counting the news some days I don't even watch tv, but I love my coffee and coke so every year I give them up and except for 2 saint days go without.
