This is sort of a mash-up of two questions in one thread, but they both pertain to realism and yaoi.

1) Why do people translate what I would assume to be "lubricant" as "lotion?" This doesn't really offer much discussion, but I was wondering why this is commonly the word offered in translations when the obvious word choice would just be "lube." It's probably the direct translation from Japanese, but still...

That being said,

2) When have you actually seen a realistic portrayal of anal sex in yaoi? It's not like I read yaoi or even manga in general to see roflrealisticanything. At times, however, it just gets to being too much (e.g. anus = glorified mangina, impossible positions, anal sex is a lot easier than it really seems, impossible kinds of lube being used, anal sex happening AT ALL for that matter). Again, I understand that yaoi isn't supposed to be 100% realistic or even be realistic at all, but even in the supposedly "realistic" yaoi that have been recommended in past threads, this sort of absence is still noted. So my question would be that why are manga artists so determined to put in what they are so painfully ignorant/did not do the research on even when their work is "realistic"? For examples, MIYAMOTO Kano's works and even the most notable realistic yaoi, Nemureru Mori no Binan all do it wrong. If you hurt after anal, go to your doctor (100% serious).

I am not bashing the above authors because I truly admire their work and what they are trying to accomplish. But the greater point is, what are they trying to accomplish? It is simply startling that even realistic works do this incorrectly. It is startling because this plays into the romanticized view of gays and further complicates the female gaze towards sex and the portrayal of the sex act. Of course, this doesn't exactly address what the point of yaoi is really, so it would be interesting to see what people (you!) think what it's really for.

tl;dr Why do realistic yaoi authors consistently screw up the mechanics of anal sex? What is the point of the yaoi genre? Why do you read yaoi? Why the heck does lotion = lubricant?

1.) I'm not exactly sure how to answer this, cause I myself don't speak Japanese and I don't translate. But I suppose they translate it that way for rather: one, they prefer that word or that's what it translates to from Japanese to English. Though I'm not saying for sure, I'm just guessing.
2.) Well.. I'm a girl. And I wouldn't know how it would feel for a fact, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't not hurt.. I mean, think about it. Because first of all, I don't think the anal is the proper place to have sex in the first place, so obviously it would hurt much more than to have it in the regular place? LOL; I don't know. ( I've never actually had it myself, so I'm not the one to judge.. LOLOL; )

Q: Why do realistic yaoi authors consistently screw up the mechanics of anal sex?
A: It's obviously your way of viewing it, cause I personally don't think that it wouldn't not hurt to have some.. thing.. stuck up my butt. Just saying.

Q:What is the point of the yaoi genre?
A: For perverts like me who like boy x boy interactions.

Q:Why do you read yaoi?
A: Cause I'm a pervert. LOL I'm being blunt. But honestly I like guys and I think it's hot and I like it - that simple.

Q:Why the heck does lotion = lubricant?
A: I suppose that's how the translator wants to translate it.

Ask the translator.

Do you read yaoi in order to see a realistic portrayal of anal sex, in the first place?
Does anybody?
If you do, well... You should just watch gay porn. Even they do a better job.

If you hurt after gym class, see a doctor?
The anus is a muscle like any other. It's perfectly reasonable and normal to expect and experience uncomfort in that area after it's been stretched, especially if you're not used to it and haven't had proper prepping.
Most people (especially in lit) either don't know or don't care about that.
Sure, anal sex without lube would hurt bad, because no self lubrication occurs there.
It hurts more if the person is tensed, even if lube is applied.

Yes, I'm a female, and yes, I'm experienced in that department, and I can say that I've had my fair share of oopsies and ouchies there. It just hurts for a bit. Doesn't mean you have to panic and go see a doctor.
For all the times it does works out well - it's totally worth it.
Of course, if you start bleeding uncontrollably because you were an idiot and went wild with your ass without lubrication and preparation - it's your own damn fault and you should definitely seek medical assistance.

Going back to subject in question, which is sex in yaoi, I agree that most of them glorify the male ass and anal in general.
But then again, yaoi was never meant to be a realistic portrayal of absolutely anything.
It's all done in good fun. Unless of course, the reader is an easily influenced teenage girl.
But all easily influenced teenage girls are like that. They take things too seriously.

Yeah, anal in yaoi is far from being realistic, but I think you're being way too severe with your judgement in general.

You're asking what they're trying to accomplish?
Most of the time - a paycheck.
On other times - to share their views together with the paycheck, and maybe make a difference for the better.

Not enough research, perhaps?
And with one of your examples being Nemureru Mori no Binan - they don't even have explicit sex there.
Miyamoto Kano is good mainly for angsty plots.
Her sex is nice and hot and I don't feel like being nitpicky about her.

What is the point of the yaoi genre?

Like with any other genre - entertainment.
There's an audience for it and we love it~

Why do you read yaoi?

Because it's fun.
Fun and better than shoujo smut. =)
I like seeing two guys in bed more than a silly hetero couple where the dude rapes the chick and she declares undying love for him while choking on snot and tears.
Of course, I don't like silly gay couples, either, but that's beside the point.

1.) lotion vs. lube- no clue, but this has never really annoyed me.

2.) when have I seen a realistic portrayal of anal sex- I do remember reading a couple that I thought were pretty realistic, but don't remember the names. I'll edit if I do remember, but my memory is pretty bad. But yeah, they are very few

3.) why do realistic yaoi authors screw up anal sex- I have 2 guesses. Either they haven't done the research or they feel it is easier for the story to just have a guy who's ass is magically lubed up and stretched than to put in all the details. They might not find the details sexy

4.) the point of the yaoi genre- Sex. But seriously, I think it has something to do with Japan's feelings toward female sexuality. I mean, really, what is up with the most common storyline in shoujo smut being boy rapes girl, girl falls in love with boy? It is so rare to find a girl in any genre (expect Hentai) who is comfortable with her sexuality. So I think yaoi exists because it is easier to deal with male sexuality than to deal with female sexuality

5.) why do i read yaoi- Sex. Basically I got tired of the shoujo smut genre and the vast majority hentai don't really have storylines, romance, or good looking guys
