Odd scifi teen novel

I only remember that for some reason a bunch of teens got on an island, some scientist experimented? on them and they got turned/put into animal bodies. I don't think any of them wanted to be experimented on There was a scene where one person was turned into a stingray and a different scientist was asking them questions, so the person took a bunch of stones in their mouth and spit them out in a checkmark as an answer.
