Anyone ever read this novel(not a manga) before? I only remember that for some reason a bunch of teens got on an island, some scientist experimented? on them and they got turned/put into animal bodies. I don't think any of them wanted to be experimented on

There was a scene where one person was turned into a stingray and a different scientist was asking them questions, so the person took a bunch of stones in their mouth and spit them out in a checkmark as an answer.

Nah, can't be Animorphs. The kids in Animorphs never got experimented on, and they were in a city/suburb, not an island

Maximum Ride by James Patterson, perhaps? I read only volume one, a very long time ago and I don't remember anything from it... but there were definitely some non-human teenagers experimented on...
