I dig into heavy thrash like Slayer, Exodus, FFDP, Megadeth.
Groove/southern/sludge metal like COC, Crowbar, Pantera.
Tough Guy Hardcore, like Hatebreed and Soulfly.
Classic Metal like Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Iron Maiden and The Sword.

Metal?
UFO. Michael Schenker is a god. Then again, they're just proto-metal as far as metal goes and few Americans have had the luck to hear of them, but...lots of later metal acts were heavily influenced by them.
As for what metal is nowadays...I listen to one black metal band, Dimmu Borgir, and that's because they take themselves way too seriously, which generally leads to me laughing while listening to their music--is that opposite the effect they want it to have? Outside of that, I don't listen to much in the way of metal.

Same here. I get these reaaally funny looks sometimes when I hear them and start laughing...<_<
Sorry if I list some non-metal bands (cause I fail at classifying stuff) but I'm recently obsessed with Blind Guardian, also Arch Enemy (Dimmu Borgir too but that's pretty rare as they make me crack up) Shape of Despair, Nightwish (who might be coming here this year XD) and After Forever (they came here last year...a day before my exams ;_😉

hmm. I mostly like Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Slipknot, Metallica and polish metal bands like Behemoth, Vader, Frontside.

@miss Romania-Nightwish is cool, dig the female vocals.
And as far as my favorite metal band of all time, Black Sabbath is THE best metal band ever in the history of metal.

Around here everyone likes NW (female vocals ftw!) 😛 ..except for this chick who thought NW are an Evanescence copycat nocomment
Forgot to add HIM (I'm really gonna get shot for this but oh well~), Epica, Dragonforce and J-rock bands such as Headphones President and probably D'espairsRay and Exist+trace too.
Best band in the history of metal thing is very subjective 😛 , my vote still goes to NW 😀 . As for worst band, title goes to the recent influx of bands doing a contest to see who can bash their instruments and yell hardest. And I personally never found anything in Slayer, but that's just imfho.

In my opinion the best metal bands and metal music comes from scandivian or simply Northern Europe. Norway, Finland and Sweden, They know how to do that stuff. 😃
It's just too hard to pick one best band so here's little list of my favourite metal bands: Amorphis, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Sonata Arctica, Sentenced, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, Cradle of Filth, Slipknot, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Mokoma, Lamb of God, etc...
Could continue the list for forever... 🙂

Man I SO disagree with you guys. The best metal comes from the American South(Red, White and Blue FTW). Of the bands making music right now, I have to say that DOWN is the best. Of all time, it has to be Black Sabbath.

Props. The only thing is that I like the projects of the people in DOWN more than Hellyeah and Damageplan. COC and Crowbar ftw.

Blind Guardian, DragonForce, Rhapsody, Within Temptation, Epica, X Japan, Linkin Park (yeah, they're metal), Leaves' Eyes... all good too. With a few exceptions, though, I'm not really into anything particularly old. I'm sure it's great, but...
