As we all know there is also an option in the personal list section which is "You decided not to finish this series" and marked as a blue ball.

It is pretty useful to mark series that you dislike and do not plan to read in the future.

However there are two suggestions about it.

One - you should be able to mark the series directly with it, since now you have to place it on any other of your lists and only then you can transfer it to "choose to not finish" list. It would be more convenient if you could mark it in an instant.

Second one - it would be also better to show the mark of "you choose not to finish" series list (the blue ball) on the recent updates as well.

Since for now, you can only see this mark while browsing series but it carries no mark when you see it on update list, so I think it would be an improvement if it would be added as well...

This way you could sort out what you like what you don't better.

I think these would be great ideas, these are probably one of the few problems I have at MU. They would certainly make things much more convenient.

Both of these have been suggested before:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=5510&hl= unfinished
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3296&hl= unfinished

The reason they don't show the symbol in the Releases section is because if you decided not to finish reading it, you wouldn't be interested in knowing if there were updates for the series. So there is no need to mark series you don't want to read more of in the releases section.

Actually it would be useful for me, as I'm reading enough series that I often see a title on the release page and think, "wait, wasn't I reading that, why isn't it showing up as something I'm reading?" Then when I click on the title, I get the description which reminds me "oh yeah, I decided to drop that one" along with the little symbol showing that it's on my "unfinished" list. Not a big deal, but it would be useful to see the "unfinished" symbol on the release page.

DEATH NOTE!

Because as soon as a certain person departed I decided to stop reading...However I hate having unfinished series when its well within my power to collect and finish the story....so I'll probably pick it up.

I also would argue against someones idea that "if you decided not to finish reading it, you wouldn't be interested in knowing if there were updates for the series"

It actually is a very poor argument whoever came up with it. It would be more valid if it would not show the series that is marked as such on updates list as general but when it is showed and when it is showed as unread and unmarked then it becomes confusing.

I mean some poeple read a lot of manga's and sometimes this unfinished mark is the best way to keep a track on the manga's that they found to be uninteresting. Having a mark of unfinished would help on updates list because otherwise you simply do not know which one you decided to finish or which one you haven't read still as both are marked the same.

So yeah I think it would be better to show the mark of unfinished on the updates page or not show manga marked with such sign at all.

Because for now you are making the unfinished mark bit too useless.

Not read and chosing not to finish are two different things. And you mark them as one in the uplaod section which is a no good. Because if you havent read it you may be willing to try it out, but if you chose to not finish it you know that it was something you did not like it.

Thats why it is not about keeping the track of the unfinished ones, but rather keeping a track of the unread ones not mixing them with the ones you chose not to finish.

Usefull idea.
It's annoying when I have to go all the way to my lists, search for the series and click...
Also it being on the update is good as well. I don't often remember the japanese names, so I don't know if it's dropped or not...

It's a shame we don't have a list were we can simplely put the things we don't want to read (not even start)...

Random question: @Darknemo2000 , you know russian?^^ roll eyes

I have been wondering about that myself for quite sometime. I sure would like a marker on that too.. there are certain mangas that I accidentally re-read coz I forgot that I had read it long ago so such a marker would definitely be very useful...

Indeed, it seems like a self-clear thing to do, yet no one did this yet. Well hopefully it will be done in the future to make things easier and more comfortable to follow (specially concerning the latest release list).

@NightSwan, yes I do speak russian. Do you?

I remember that when we first started having lists, the blue ball was shown on the recent releases page. But it was taken off for the reason given above. I've always missed it, but since it wasn't too bothersome I never mentioned it before.

I think this option will give me more negative effect than good. Alot of my decided not to finish manga are manga I don't want to remember about it anymore ever. I even cringe whenever there's a series I used to read but start to hate showed up in discussion. I'm not likely to use this option if we do have them. I rather not have its name as a reminder of my wasted and teeth grinding time.

I think that's only a minority here. I think enabling this option can help organize lists and reading habits, as well as for those who may want to pick up series again in the future. I can remember a number of times of trying to find a manga I read several years ago with little success so I really do think this option with have a positive effect in the majority. And hey, if you don't want to put the series under 'unfinished,' no one's forcing you to.

Well we have to decide first are

Haven't read yet

and

Chose not to read

are the same thing or not. If we count them as the same thing then I guess there should not be any difference on the release page shown. However, if we count them as different which I think they are - I think more reasonable would be to distinguish them from each other by putting a blue ball mark on the chose not to finish manga's.

Sometimes there is a new manga released that you haven't read yet but it may get caught up within the bunch that you have read but dropped because they are all marked the same.

Akillarian, I don't see how it would be inconvenient for you. I mean if the dropped series would not be showed on the release page at all, then yes one could argue if to change things or not, yet now both dropped and not read yet manga's are shown the same. Wouldn't it be better to have a mark that separates them if we held them to be different things (which I think they are).
