Borderline. I don't really enjoy shounen epics (and occasionally think less of people who obsess over them, depending on the personality), but I certainly wouldn't refrain from reading something just because it's popular.

As for anime, I judge that separately from manga. However, I tend to be even less likely to watch generic action anime than I am to read generic action manga. Unless it's mecha, in which case I inevitably do at some point, even though I really don't like robots very much.

I'm not an elitist. While I do not like Naruto itself, I do find some "mainstream" / "shounen" series enjoyable. I tend to stay away from translating them, however, because of the nature of the "rabid leechers" they tend to draw and I kind of like translating in non-mainstream stuff. It makes me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something by translating what no one else is.

As far as calling people "Narutards", I only do so out of simple jest and I mean nothing demeaning or offensive by it when I do. The only thing I don't like about some of the fans is the aforementioned "rabid leecher" who seems like he's going to drool, slobber or... *ahem* far worse all over you just from the sheer mention of [series X's] name.

I don't have something against mainstream per sé, but it's becoming harder to enjoy a manga that's popular the more I read.
I still sort of check what's going on in Naruto/Bleach/OP every week, but the days when I used to be a rabid fan of all three are long since over. I still have a soft spot for those DB-influenced series; but there's only so much rehashing one can take. They all follow pretty much the same pattern.

I wouldn't say I'm an elitist; I mean I don't really look down on people who enjoy mainstream stuff (unless they remain stuck in that category). But I am a picky reader.

I would, however, NEVER scanlate something that's bound to be popular again, though.
I did that with Fairy Tail, and it really showed me the ugly side of the community.

i don't think it matters all that much if it's mainstream, just if it's any good.

Elitism in anime/manga is kind of pointless (actually, I just hate any form of elitism). I especially find it funny how some people use "Narutard" or "Bleach head" or whatnot as an insult... so juvenile.

I read and watch what I like, I could care less if that makes me part of the so-called hoi polloi roll eyes

there is elitism in manga? Since it's a matter of personal preferences i don't judge people when it's about that. I read whatever falls into my hands, i find some interesting and some not, that is all.

the anti-narutard sentiment is not elitist. Narutards are called such because they are comprised of some of the worst leechers right now. If you're a naruto fan with the patience and decency to follow the most basic of fansub and scanlation etiquette, then you're not a narutard.

If you go to great lengths at whining for what you want, or actively leeching from sources that harm fansubber and scanlator efforts (i.e. Narutofan and Youtube), then you are a narutard, or tard of any series that which you ravenously consume with disregard for others. mad

Yes, yes I am. I'm not sorry if I offend you, but I do despise a loaf of Shonen. Especially considering there's masterpieces out there that no-one reads. Someone posted before me that they'll read anything 4 volumes and more...
What's wrong with shorter manga? With shorter manga, the author is able to set t a concrete storyline and know when to end it. Not the case with manga 15 volumes+.
Seriously though. Why can't people just shut up and patiently wait for a new manga chapter/anime episode to be released? Is it the end of your life if the sub group take a break or something...?
People obsess over this shit too much. To hell with the Japs! cool

Their real life is probably too unfulfilling.

lol I guess seeing as One Piece fans tend to hold themselves to some higher standard. Which I find stupid seeing as One Piece, Fairy Tail, Kekkaishi, Hunter x Hunter, etc. all follow the same shonen format set by series like Dragon Ball, Astro Boy, and even YuYu Hakusho.

I tend to stay away from shonen (I mostly read darker, more mature seinen) but that's too broad of a category to completely avoid b/c there are some gems labeled as "shonen" that don't come w/ the usual cliches. I'll give anything a try and if I don't think it's worth all the hype, I'll drop it and move on. And there's nothing wrong w/ a long-running series, as long as it stays fresh and doesn't get too stale.

The one thing that annoys me just as much as the aforementioned leechers are the elitist snobs who proclaim their superiority in taste and intellect b/c they've read Homonculus and Eternal Sabbath.

Well I do tend to look at DBZ fans kinda crooked, but either than that, nah not really.

I don't look down on anyone's choices, I'm just glad that we can still make them.

Exactly.

We have no room to look down upon someone else's choices.

this is what trips me out, it's all generic fighting shounen at the core yet ppl bash anything related to naruto/bleach because a few(ok maybe a few more than a few) idoits.

but on topic, wouldn't say i'm an elitist, i'll read just about anything(though prefer completed, who wouldn't?) and don't really care what anybody else reads. to each his/her own.
