So do any of you guys find a game that have -more than just your average save the day- plot?

For me it's the mgs series. probably because of it's plot twists. But I do admit that the storytelling becomes a bit messy. sometimes the story got me really confused that i had to play it again or read up things just to understand.

Ah, the Metal Gear games are some of my favourites as well. Even survial horror games have protagonists who somehow get dragged into saving the world... some exceptions are Silent Hill and Fatal Frame (I guess).
Kratos in God of War isn't trying to save the world (but killing Ares might count towards it.... hmm...)

I see what you mean....

Hmm, there's the baldur's gate series, and Kotor has some good plot twists. If you like Kill Bill, No More Heroes is a great choice. The half-life series is known for having a pretty good narrative, and Eternal Darkness is pretty interesting, if you've never played.

Suikoden Series. It's not about save the world or the princess, just conflicts between nation but almost every character (108 people + npc + enemies) have their own story.

The game with the best twists ever is the not so known "Lufia II - Rise of the Sinistrals" (a JRPG for the SNES).

I still remember my face when in the middle of the game (I thought it was the ending because there were a long scene and I was expecting the credits starting any moment):

the main char dumped his girlfriend, married another girl in the party, had a kid, the enemy made a comeback, kidnapped their child, and you're back in the game!

I thought that for a JRPG of that time ('95) it was a nice turn of events. It also had many interesting elements and I still think that Pokemon have been inspired by this game.

Other good story are in the Chrono series, FF6-7-9 (especially 7), Tales of (especially Phantasia) and I'm probably forgetting something.
For western one Baldur's Gate 1-2, Planescape Torment, Newerwinter Nights (played only 1).

I'm also a fan of also graphical adventures so I'd say: Monkey 1-2, Sam & Max, Indy (Fate of Atlantis).

Ah... that was the golden age of video games, now there's a good game every thousand. 🙂

Games with good plots and stories, huh. Let's see. I rather like most of the plots to the Fire Emblem games. They're surprisingly deep, even if it's the gameplay that makes that series my favorite. Tales of the Abyss has one of the most engrossing plots of any I've seen recently (mostly because of how long it is). Tales of Symphonia is less spectacular but still good. Final Fantasy Tactics has a marvelous plot, one of the best I've seen. The original Tactics Ogre might it beat it though, if only because of how it branched. I have to agree that FF VI is an exceptional story and so are Chrono Trigger and Tales of Phantasia. Others I kinda liked back in the day include, Secret of Mana, Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force II. Though the overall plot is maybe a little lacking, I think the original Valkyrie Profile has very good story telling.

that was basically a ripoff of tales of phantasia.

Yes, they are.

Yeah, KOTOR was pretty nice. Specially since you control his actions.

I also liked ff8, kinda cheesy but i liked it for the romance.
ff9 was also nice, it gives off a nice fantasy feel.

I've not much to say about the tales series but right now im playing tales of the abyss i hope the plot is good. 😛

I meant the story was a rip-off, if you look at other games in the series at least they had some diversity. tales of abyss, tales of eternia, etc. they took the same story and gave it a tweak, added annoying characters and dat annoyed me to death considering the battle system was so good.
