As far as I understand it, the three xs are variables (as in algebra). Since the series does frequently deal with addictions of some sort (though not in the traditional sense) that line of thinking seems like the correct interpretation to me.

I just remember reading that somewhere though, I'm not 100% positive it's correct.

It does exactly what the author wants it do.

I have no idea...
When I first saw the title I thought it was some H or ecchi manga. 🤣

Exactly right. 😃

Besides, it sounds better than to call it ...Holic anyways. Also, the "xxx" are not meant to be said when saying the actual title. You just say "Holic"

So XXXHolic = X^3Holic?
Or should it be XYZHolic?

Wouldn't "xholic" sound better then? Doesn't look as good, but the xxx is really misleading to those who aren't familiar with the manga.
I really thought it would be about some sex crazed person, but then I saw it was by clamp. 🤣

But who knows why authors give the names they give sometimes...
Like "bleach"...~

Edit:
Oh, so the addiction thing doesn't aply only on the first volumes...~
Well, the holic part makes sense~

"XXX" means 'porn', so it's pornoholic, obviously.

i think this thread was already posted time ago, anyway:

XXXHolic means XXX=something - Holic (like Workaholic)

In fact everyone in the series (most notably in the anime, from my point of view) is "addicted/fixed/troubled" by something, thus XXXHolic

no pr0n here, sorry 😛

If you watch the anime, they only say "Holic"

edit: Oh, and I don't know if its irony or anything, but there are barely any H doujins for the series xD (mostly yaoi...eew)

i think it the XXX means unknown... or hidden

something that sometimes appear in manga as years: like.. "in the year 30XX, the world has become a different place"

or something like that~

Like many people who have posted, I ignored this series for ages because I thought it was going to be H, although I knew it was by clamp (I LOVE clamp =D) I don't know, I guess I thought they must be just playing around or something.

I agree with the idea that xxx stands for a variable as previously discussed, it makes sense, but what if it not only stands for multiple variables, but also exists for one specific one? I've been thinking that for awhile, trying to think or a 3 letter word to fit in, but since it could be in Japanese romanji or English... -.-; I think maybe it will make sense at the end? =D

🤣 true
For some reason, when I heard the title, I thought it'd be a serious seinen about dealing with alcohol addiction (I was thinking "alcoholic" at the time 😛 )

mmhh i read the meaning of the name LOOONG TIME ago so i can be very vague about my answer

but it means what yuukos store its about
xxx= was like random items and holic =Maybe it was actually something like addict

the thing that i can remember its that it matchs prefectly the manga cz the meaning is about finding stuff, but it doesnt make clear what kind of stuff(thats y the "xxx" 😉

u know that yuuko's store has... everything, and she is alwayes receiving things and having more and giving and all that..
and the name is about that...

i do know is has nothing to do with ..

sex loool

The xxx means blank and holic means adicct
You can sort of get it because almost every person needing help by Yuko is either adicted to something or something is addicted to them
