New Poll - IRC Usage

Our member rincewind1990 suggested that we do an IRC poll again. It's been almost exactly 2 years since the last one (with 30.6% not even knowing what IRC is). So 2 years later, how has it declined? For me personally, I almost never log in anymore...

Internet Explorer 8 - votes: 98 (0.5%)
Internet Explorer 9 - votes: 51 (0.3%)
Internet Explorer 10 - votes: 68 (0.3%)
Internet Explorer 11 - votes: 274 (1.4%)
Mozilla Firefox - votes: 10009 (50.1%)
Google Chrome - votes: 7825 (39.1%)
Safari - votes: 635 (3.2%)
Opera - votes: 730 (3.7%)
Other - votes: 158 (0.8%)
There were 19992 total votes.
The poll ended: December 21st 2013

If we ever do this poll again, I'll combine all the IE choices together. Interestingly enough, all the IE votes equal all the Safari votes. And Opera unexpectedly beats both of them, which really surprises me because no one I know uses Opera.

I'm curious about Safari. Does that mean that most of our users don't use Macs? Or does it mean that the Mac users don't use Safari?

New Poll - Web Browser

If you've been a long time user, you'll realize that this is the third time we've done this poll. No matter! It's been almost 4 years since the last iteration (and also 3 new versions of IE). You know the drill. Back in 2010, it was Firefox that won with a massive 66.9%. How much popularity has Chrome gained?

Apparently it's not hard to scanlate shounen-ai and yaoi.

English Scanlators Only

To all those people getting submitting non-English scanlators as groups, please stop. We are an English website and only accept English scanlation groups. I'm getting tired of rejecting your submissions over and over (and recently there's been more attempts, hence this news post).

The only exception is if you also do English releases. But if I take a quick glance at your submitted website and can't find any English there, I'm just gonna reject your group.

PS: The funny thing is that I hope these non-English scanlators can read English, otherwise this news post serves no purpose to its intended audience.

New Poll - Hardest to Scanlate

If you haven't yet, please read the previous 3 news posts.

Now to the poll. This week's is from CatzCradle, and it's quite an odd one. In your opinion, which demographic is hardest to scanlate? Feel free to give any reason you want (whether you gotta look at naked people for hentai or you're so ashamed at how stupid some characters are in shounen. Maybe you think the language in seinen is harder to translate? Not that many of us would actually have scanlation experience in all of these demographics...

Now that I think of it, Mahou Sensei Negima! (shounen) was surprisingly hard to scanlate. It tends to have a bunch of text for 18 pages a chapter, so more to read for a proofreader and a translator. If you wanted to be accurate, you had to cross-reference the spells to non-Japanese languages. It took a bunch of work from the editors since there's a lot of redrawing if you wanna do it well. And all the above makes it hard to QC since there's so many things you need to watch out for.

Group Links Update 2

All,

I have been in communication with PayPal directly, and they have re-enabled our account. We were required to remove the PayPal donate button from the site in order to do so, but we should be fine for now.

Additionally, we have worked the issue with our host, and we are no longer in any imminent danger of being shut down, due to our compliance with the DMCA request.

I wanted to clarify some of the rumors being passed around:

  1. The DMCA was from an official source and not a troll. We have made a conscious choice not to reveal this source. We are not going to vilify the organization that did this. We want to encourage the adoption of manga outside of Japan, and we're not going to help that by putting a face to everyone's anger. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at us for removing the links.

  2. The DMCA request was for "Contributory Infringement", and this link was provided directly by the organization that filed the request: http://www.chillingeffects.org/dmca512/question.cgi?QuestionID=268

  3. The DMCA was narrowly targeted at this organization's copyright works. We had to act quickly to ensure that we complied with the request, so we disabled all links. We are looking into code changes to somehow enable links for scanlators who do not scanlate anything related to this organization's licenses. This may take some time.

  4. This is the first time we've had any sort of DMCA filed related to linking to scanlator websites.

  5. The DMCA was not submitted to us directly, but was passed instead to PayPal and our host. We found out from our host and acted immediately. We have worked with companies in the past to ensure their rights are protected, and we would have appreciated being contacted first. We are willing to communicate with the organization that made the demand. I can be contacted (manick @ mangaupdates.com)

  6. The DMCA was submitted through an intermediary who specializes in handling removal of copyrighted material from the Internet.

The MangaUpdates team realizes the importance of group links. To some, this site is no longer what it was without them. While we cannot guarantee anything, we are still trying to come up with some way to provide this information.

We encourage everyone to BUY MANGA. While everyone's purpose for being in this community is their own, our goal is to increase awareness to anyone who wishes to be informed. That is our mission, and has always been our mission. We will continue to strive to do that as long as we can.

Thank you,

MU

Group Links Update

All,

In order to quell some of the fury that occurred after our news statement about removing group links, I want to let everyone know that we are having internal discussions currently about whether there are more options available to us.

Due to imminent threats and action taken against our host and the suspension of our paypal account, we had to move quickly to ensure that MU stayed alive. While we do not believe we were contributing to infringement by providing informational and historical links to scanlator websites, we have limited recourse to strong-armed tactics used under DMCA. We are currently discussing code enhancements and policy changes to account for content owned by the organization involved as an alternative to complete removal of links from the website.

We hope to have this situation sorted out in time. Please remember that we still require active site/forum/etc in order to validate releases.

Thank you

Group Links Removed

As some eagle-eyed users have noticed, all website and forum links for all scanlation groups have disappeared. In addition to this, none of the IRC links are clickable anymore; they remain as plain text. We regret to inform all of you that we have received a DMCA takedown notice. Of course, we wish to keep MangaUpdates running, so we had to resort to these measures. The representative of the group that submitted the DMCA has so far said these actions are enough.

Despite these changes, our release and group submission policies remain the same. Releases must be from scanlation groups that exist according to MangaUpdates, meaning they must have a group entry. In order to have a group entry, the group still needs to submit one or more of the following: website, forum, Twitter, Facebook, and IRC channel. The website and forum will not be displayed anywhere on MangaUpdates though. These pieces of information will be for our own purposes in order to verify the existence of a release. We continue to strive to display accurate information for all series, groups, and releases, so we will check the validity of every submitted release. If you feel a release is fake, you can submit a Change Request, and we will double check your claim.

Thank you for continuing to use MangaUpdates.

New Poll - Hentai

I must apologize since I actually forgot to change the poll due to all the family stuff that was going on during the Thanksgiving holidays. It's the first time that I haven't done a weekly poll in time (since we started doing this all the way back in the beginning of 2008). Well, here you go. This week's poll comes from a suggestion from our member psycho-shocker. What level of sexuality do you prefer in your manga? I shouldn't really have to explain this one...

Apparently people are disagreeing over the definition of hentai and whether yaoi/yuri should be choices. For the purposes of this poll, hentai means any material that is 18+ (I live in the US) in a sexual manner, whether that be heterosexual or homosexual. Borderline H is basically almost there, but not quite. Ecchi is limited to maybe a boob flash or something like that.

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Last gen console?
Choices:
Wii - votes: 2941 (23.1%)
PS3 - votes: 5996 (47%)
Xbox 360 - votes: 3814 (29.9%)
There were 12751 total votes.
The poll ended: December 3rd 2013

And PS3 wins this one! I actually bought a PS3 during Black Friday... I'm primarily a PC gamer, but I decided to get the PS3 since it was a good deal and I want to finally play some PS3 exclusives (like The Last of Us, Ni no Kuni, Uncharted, Beyond: Two Souls, Metal Gear Solid, some Final Fantasty, etc)

New Poll - Last Gen Consoles

This exact poll was done over 5 years ago. With all the next-gen consoles released now, I felt it was time to bring this one back. Previously, PS3 won by a mere 4 votes (over the Wii). How will things fare this time? In the comments, feel free to list why you like each console and your favorite games for them. Me, I'm a PC gamer... My family's only owned Nintendo products, as I have many siblings (multiplayer components were huge factors in buying console games for the family). But man, I do want those other consoles for those juicy exclusives...

Question: How many series do you estimate that you have finished? (Oneshots are fine, doujinshi don't count, and series must be completed)
Choices:
0-100 - votes: 4463 (33.5%)
100-300 - votes: 4355 (32.6%)
300-500 - votes: 1914 (14.3%)
500-700 - votes: 903 (6.8%)
700-1000 - votes: 525 (3.9%)
1000+ - votes: 1181 (8.9%)
There were 13341 total votes.
The poll ended: November 23rd 2013

Excluding the 1000+ option, it's a pretty nice curve! I'm somewhere in the 100-300 range probably.

New Poll - Completed Series

This week's poll is the brainchild of our member kelly123456000. How many series do you think that you've completed in your entire life? For the purposes of our poll, let's say that the series itself must be completed (so no putting Kochikame on that list). Oneshots are fine, but doujinshi don't count. (Here at MangaUpdates, we consider any non-official work that is based on an official series as a doujinshi. If it's original, it's a oneshot). Well, I guess if you read a lot of oneshots, then your numbers will naturally be a lot higher. Just an estimate is fine!

Question: Opinion of animals or small creatures that function as the pet of the manga's main character
Choices:
They're so cute! - votes: 2001 (18%)
Love them - votes: 781 (7%)
I'm okay with them - votes: 2345 (21.1%)
They're alright as long as they serve a functional purpose - votes: 3635 (32.7%)
Totally unnecessary to include them - votes: 877 (7.9%)
Could care less - votes: 1464 (13.2%)
There were 11103 total votes.

More or less don't care... Not too many haters or lovers
