As a young kid, Nagashima dropped out of junior high school and started working as a paperboy and a tofu salesman.
He eventually became an assistant to TEZUKA Osamu after living in Tokiwa-sō off-n-on. This lead to his publication of Mangaka Zankoku Monogatari, which earned him recognition in the manga world.
In 1956, he formed a coterie group with AKATSUKA Fujio, ISHIMORI Shotaro and SUZUKI Mitsuaki.
MURAOKA Eiichi, MITSUHASHI Otoya and KOUGO Tsuguo were his assistants. They are the models of Wakamono-tachi.
His works were an early influence on ADACHI Mitsuru.
