New Poll - What Came Before

This week's poll was suggested by Nekore. It's an alternate version of a poll we did at the beginning of the year. In case you don't know, sometimes an author will publish the prototype of a series they already finished. It's like the pilot episode of a TV series. Characters, plots, and names may be different, but the essence of the series is contained in this one chapter (since it's usually a oneshot).

I'm baffled why people think ecchi has no limit. There's a definition for it...

New Poll - Ecchi Definition

This week's poll was suggested by Transdude1996. Where do you draw the line with the definition of ecchi? If you don't even know what it means, how are you a fan of manga? Even if you don't like it, you should at least know what it is! Go read its Wikipedia article!

New Poll - No Second Chapter

This week's poll was again suggested by F_J. Next week's will probably be their third suggestion... Anyways, for this week, do you have any opinions on scanlation groups that release only the prologue or first chapter of a series, and then either they drop the project or never release another chapter for months? Perhaps the group is slow. Or maybe it was just to bring awareness to the series and have another group pick it up.

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Thoughts on groups that skip around when scanlating chapters? (such as releasing chapters out of publication order)

New Poll - Out of Order Scanlations

This week's poll was suggested by F_J. You ever encounter scanlations where the chapters aren't done in publication order? Maybe they skip around from chapter 4 to 9 to 6. Or maybe chapters 1-25 are done, and then suddenly another group starts at chapter 71.

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Your optimal manga chapter length?
Choices:
About 18 pages (standard weekly series) - votes: 225 (6.7%)
Maybe 25 pages~ - votes: 700 (20.8%)
Around 35 pages. - votes: 703 (20.9%)
Circa 45 pages? - votes: 279 (8.3%)

I really don't care... - votes: 1109 (33%)

The poll ended: February 29th 2020

Compared to 12 years ago, looks like more people prefer between 25-35 pages rather than something longer.

New Poll - Chapter Length

This week's poll wasn't technically from zeazea. zeazea suggested this idea, but the wording of this particular poll was developed by Lucky9, back in 2008. We're actually re-doing an old poll.

New Poll - Anime Adaptations of Ongoing Series

This week's poll was suggested by jacob66. In your opinion, what's the best way to create an anime adaptation of a long, ongoing manga series? Hopefully it doesn't end like Game of Thrones...

New Poll - Binge-Reading Manga

This poll was suggested by ForeignerChan. In case you don't know the concept of binge-reading, it's similar to binge-watching a TV series (or anime). You know how Netflix has every episode available to watch? Might as well watch the entire season in a single sitting! Do you do that for manga? Personally, I remember pulling an all-nighter to finish reading Death Note because I just couldn't put it down and wanted to see how it ended.

Previous Poll Results:
Question: You find out that the manga you're reading is actually adapted from a novel. Do you go read the novel (assuming there is a translation)?
Choices:
Nah, no chance - votes: 745 (22.1%)
Definitely yes! - votes: 818 (24.3%)
Perhaps... - votes: 1806 (53.6%)
There were 3369 total votes.

New Poll - Manga -> Novel

This week's poll was suggested by F_J. Assuming the novel came first, would you read the novel for a manga series you picked up?

Previous Poll Results:
Question: What kinds of fights do you prefer to see in manga?
Choices:
I don't like fighting - votes: 361 (12.8%)
Unrealistic fights, i.e., fights that use magic, ki, ninjitsu, or other special abilities - votes: 1766 (62.8%)
Realistic fights, i.e., fights that could occur in real life - votes: 683 (24.3%)
There were 2810 total votes.
The poll ended: February 1st 2020

Some people argued that even the "realistic" fights aren't that realistic because a person would be incapacitated much more easily than shown in most manga, even ones that are just fighting with their fists.

Hard - votes: 970 (26.4%)

I'm glad some people looked at the explanation! Now you should look up hard vs. soft science fiction. Or maybe high vs. low fantasy.

New Poll - Hard vs. Soft Magic Systems

This week's poll was suggested by Sosseres, and it requires some explanation. The distinction between hard vs. soft magic systems was popularized by one of my favorite authors, Brandon Sanderson.

Soft: The rules and limitations of the magic isn't really explained. It's all just fantasy to the reader. Stuff happens, and it's powerful. Some examples are The Lord of the Rings and the kind of magic you see in Disney movies.

Hard: There is an explanation for how magic works with clear costs and limitations. To the reader, it's more technical than fantastical. For example, you have Fullmetal Alchemist and Mx0.

It's really a spectrum though, so series typically fall somewhere in between. Naruto started hard but got softer as the series progressed. In my opinion, many long-running series fall into this trap of continually introducing new antagonists that are somehow stronger than anyone before with very little explanation. If you want a more detailed explanation, go read the Wikipedia article.
