What will I say about Superior? It's odd, tragic, violent, yet charming, funny, optimistic. Love it or not, you can't say it's "of average" if being a true shounen fan.
Plot/StoryWhen Sheila the Demon Queen subdued all the monsters in the world and annihilated half the population of mankind, human decided to send Exa the Hero to kill her. However, very few knows who the real Demon Queen is. Bored of her position, Sheila decided to hide her identity and joined Exa's journey. The name "Superior" may have come from the two main characters: they are both "superior" ones, with great strength, strong will, and sharp eyes. Along the journey, Sheila gradually learned about 'pain' and 'love', about the difference between 'respect' and 'fear'. She fell deeply in love with Exa. Yet the questions remain: What if Exa find out Sheila's true identity, and what about the world he dreams of, where demons and human co-exist?
Characters Sheila is a typical female characters in RPG, but a very new one to manga. Though females are often strong and cold in Shounen, not many can reach her level. Sheila is prideful, charming, cute, yet realistic, powerful and ready to kill anyone getting in her way. With the condition set with Exa, she stopped killing in exchange with being allowed to go with him. The attraction of Superior is that, throughout the story, Sheila gradually changed from "bad" to"good", yet it's still very natural. She's good, yet still prideful, charming, cute and powerful. She's what makes Superior "beyond average".
Exa is a typical hero that reminds of swordsmen such as those in Rurouni Kenshin and Trigun. Apparently, he's powerful, despite the fact that he uses most of his power to flee and defend rather than to attack monsters even when he can easily sweep them out with a strike. His ideal is to create a world in which monsters and human co-exist. As usual in manga, at least there'll be one character who'll play the role of "guiding star". In other words, if Sheila is who brings the "difference", Exa is who brings the "balance".
Overall The manga is brought by Ichtys, a new artist to the shounen world. Everything in Superior, from names, art, dialogues... to plot, characters are more like an RPG than a manga. Even the publisher (Shounen Gangan) is one part of Square Enix, which is more famous as a game producer than a manga publisher. Superior is not a popular title, yet, to me, it's one of the rare "perfect" masterpiece.
Great review.
I like how you made your very own description - and you also made a question at the end of the description, which made it quite exciting.
You described the character OK. I do think that she is an average person in a shounen manga, but oh well, it is still a great review.
I like how you describe the hero. At first I always thought that he was kind of weak, but he is actually friendly and kind to both monsters and human beings.
- I don't think, that it is a "perfect" manga, because those manga do not exist.
Take care
The review is ok but is obiously written by a fan...
I like this manga but I wouldn't give it a 10/10
8/10 fits better.
Why?(I won't be spesific to not spoil)
Plot-is interesting and the manga stays with it(for now).4.5
Characters- the "hero" is, for me at least is a bit strange and the demon lord also and a little unrealistic.3
Drawing Style- is good but messy from time to time 4.3
Enjoyment - enjoyble indeed 4.5
Overall -you should read "Superior" but do not expect the greatest manga of your life or something...
