Description

Several decades before the fall of Wall Maria, a ferocious Titan enters into Shiganshina due to the actions of a fanatical cult. Chaos ensues, and from the consumed corpse of a pregnant woman, a boy named Kuklo is born. Shamed and disgraced for being a Titan's son, Kuklo faces hardships throughout his early life and is eventually purchased as a trophy for a noble family in Wall Sheena. There he meets Sharle Inocencio, a nobleman's daughter, who teaches him the history and ways of the people of the Walls.

Good read, but rushed ending

The story and the art at the beginning felt odd and at times overly dramatic and felt like a stereotypical shounen manga. It eventually found its footing and began to develop an origin story at a steady pace.

However, right at the last arc everything was rushed. The ending that was supposed to be climactic just fell short and the epilogue was weak just like Tokyo Ghoul epilogue.

Excellent and engaging manga all in all.

Overall story development, pretty good character decelopment, characters, backstory/explainations, use of old and new environments, use of lore/respecting the original story, engaging, plot twists

The art style in the beginning, weird anatomy at times, manga stereotypes (especially in the beginning), rushed ending

The best version of the mythos, for a time

The Attack on Titan franchise is a runaway train and why not as it is a breath of fresh borderline seinen air in the dead waste of modern shounen action but I fear that it is the wrong version of the tale that is getting all of the attention. Before the Fall has better art even if the main manga (8/10) has established its style after a bit of stumbling. There is no Levi to be had here (why was his short prequel so forgettable?) as he is the best part of the entire franchise but Kuklo is a similar if less cold character so I am cool.
His love interest Sharle actually gets to do stuff and show strength even if she doesn´t join the battlefield. Its the other way around in the main series. Women participate in the action but have little effect on the larger plot.
I also like that the story keeps the Titan´s danger very real as they lost their mystic a bit too early on in the "sequel" as sudden death became less of an obstacle too fast. The straightforward nature of the tale is also welcomed and I feel that I am reading something that is moving along with all the necessary steps without missing a beat or overstaying it´s well come. I look forward to its unenviable anime adaptation but animating Sharle´s elaborate hair will be a real challenge. It and the unadapted stretch of Claymore (8,5/10) derve the small screen treatment.

Update: The manga is now done and I slightly changed my tune. The original managed to develop a lot of its cast once the Vol count passed into double digits and the especially after Vol 23. Isayama further grew as an artist and the horror return with a vengeance. Before the Fall, on the other hand, lacks the added complexities of the original´s later volumes and is too stretched out at 17 Vol. The same story could have been told with about 12 Vol but this changed and expanded adaptation is superior to the light novels it is based on.

This manga aims at establshing origins to different weopons and terminology in the main story. It is fun becuase it gives trivial information and may answer potential questions that you might get while reading the main story.
